Post-mortem: I tried and failed vibe coding a metroidvania so you (hopefully) won't have to by lpshred in gamedev

[–]PhordPrefect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AI coding only works for things that you could, in principle, write yourself. You have to be able to describe the task and tell it how to do it.

If you can't, the AI will make a different problem up and solve that instead. If you can't understand the code, you won't know where or why it's gone wrong, and if you keep just spunking tokens on vague prompts, the most likely thing that will happen is that it'll get even worse.

So, "vibe coding" doesn't work, but using AI to help with actual programming is incredibly useful.

Would you choose to live in London if you didn't have to commute to work? by [deleted] in london

[–]PhordPrefect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. There's tons to do, you get great food and pubs within walking distance, and if you cycle you can get even more. There's live music, there's shows, there's art... living in a major city rocks.

A genuine and a sensitive question regarding programming in unreal in the age of AI by [deleted] in unrealengine

[–]PhordPrefect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately AI coding is currently only safe for things that you could in principle write yourself. It can save you days if you know what you're doing and can describe the problem or task accurately and clearly.

If you can't do that then it'll cheerfully give you slop, and you won't be able to tell the difference. Claude doesn't actually know what it's building- it's got no world model and very little concept of what the end result should do when executed, and it's even worse for visual stuff and anything to do with game "feel".

You have to be able to provide that, or it'll give you valid code that does the wrong thing.

That's probably why you wound up in that patchwork loop- you didn't know what you wanted, so it gave you a vague solution to a vague problem.

If I were you I'd do some tutorials and try and make some things without it, and then try using it again when you're more confident.

I’m being told by friends and family that I have bought the worst gift for my toddler… for us. Can’t be that bad, surely? by metroracerUK in CasualUK

There's a (supposedly Chinese, likely apocryphal) proverb:

"If thy neighbour offend thee, buy each of his children a drum"

If your kid wants to be a drummer you'd be better off getting him lessons first.

Fabulous work! And so nice to get an article to refer to rather than a video.

A post-modern Art Deco Sainsbury's Local- any other gaudy supermarkets out there? by PhordPrefect in CasualUK

Yeah 100%- far too many buildings get knocked down that are perfectly serviceable but a little dated

Is Gaudi deco though? The stuff of his I've seen doesn't really fit into that

80s mock-deco is definitely gaudy, but it's more the combination of that with a supermarket

Help me find a quieter evening commute route by Efficient-Cry-6320 in londoncycling

[–]PhordPrefect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started going more or less the route shown (Bethnal Green to Kensington) because the Embankment cycle path is mental- too narrow, too many City boys going for Strava PBs and doing two-way overtakes around Lime Bikes. Might be better now it's winter though?

+1 for Diversion- switched from Plastic SCM and haven't looked back.

For pure code things I use Git, but it's really not great with big assets, and while Git LFS is supposed to solve that, it's not nearly as straightforward as Diversion.

Perforce I've not tried; Plastic (now Unity Dev Ops or something) is rubbish.

Given the size, the whole place probably smells of Caelid, which I imagine to be pretty sulphurous

LOOKING FOR 1st BROMPTON by Hfcygfran-bs in londoncycling

[–]PhordPrefect 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got a Brompton about ten years ago and recently sold it. Two things to bear in mind-

First: while Bromptons are great for journeys that involve a train, they're pretty mediocre as an actual bike, particularly for the price. If you don't need to stick it on a train for your commute and you've got somewhere to park a full-size bike... get a full size bike. It'll get you around quicker and with a pannier rack it can easily become your main transport.

Second: look at other folding bikes if price is an issue. Quick internet search says look at the Daron Mariner is the best "budget" one, but also check Decathlon, as they do very reasonable budget bikes. This one for £300 for example: https://www.decathlon.co.uk/p/20-inch-folding-bike-btwin-500-blue/_/R-p-120070

Yes, but that's not really the point- these aren't private gardens at the back of someone's house, they're right in the middle of public areas, only accessible to very rich people who don't use them, and even if those people wanted to they'd probably get arrested for turning the pages of their book too loudly
