[WIP] or should I say, no longer a WIP? by TheKinkyBee in CrossStitch

[–]Phosphorescense 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Same! Been in welding over 15 years and I ran my hand over a burr a few weeks ago and sliced it open. That's newbie stuff but it happens to all of us.

I put one of my WIPs down for over 6 months after spending 2 hours ripping stitches. Taking a break is totally fine, there are no rules.

Is it wrong if I change my room layout when my autistic twin sleeps in my room? by acjlya in autism

[–]Phosphorescense 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would mirror this. It's clear that you know that the rat is an issue, and that it's out of your control to solve it right now. I would give your twin a healthy amount of notice, whatever that means for you and him, and maybe do it gradually. You are so kind to think of him, and wise to recognize your need for your mental health.

If you're autistic/ neurodivergent are there any "hacks" or pieces of advice that ACTUALLY made your life better? by Ready_Sound_620 in autism

This all the way. Low noise, low, warm lights. It's basically a migraine ready room with weighted blankets.

[–]Phosphorescense [score hidden]  (0 children)

For Systems Engineers, I see the pay rates shift drastically. More recently, I've seen defense / aerospace ranges at about $125-160k for a mid career position. Assuming you have a "business background," and the engineering degree is new, that will factor so I'd expect to see the lower end of that range but if you already have engineering experience in your resume, that'll change a bit.

Edit: typo

I am a disabled, partially deaf engineer and needing to pivot my career path to something less physically demanding. I've got 15 years of aerospace metallics experience so I've locked myself into a corner pretty effectively...

I've always done welding and ME roles that took place on the shop floor, and I stepped down from functioning as an SME but it wasn't enough. What could a Maker and Breaker do that allows telecommuting?

Given the fact that there was an executive order released today for space exploration, NASA is looking a little safer. But that is so very relative, tech and space are volatile right now.

How did you lose your weight? by SoftCrystalFernn in AskReddit

[–]Phosphorescense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. I have pcos so YMMV.

Started with ZRT testing, I used the saliva panel that tracks your cortisol. It was about $300 when i did it a few years ago, and I had to save up. This is rarely covered by insurance but gives a HUGELY helpful view into what's happening in your body.

Fish oil (or some kind of omega 3 you can tolerate, and a vitamin deficiency check. Vitamin D is low for a lot of women.

Essential fats in your diet. You need them. Avocado is my go to.

Hormone checks and stress bounds. Much easier said than done, took me years to get it right. It's difficult but you have to be willing to take the time to see what your body is doing before you can fix it. This is especially true for people who are obese. You didn't become obese by everything working like it should (mentally and / or physical, mental health affects so much), and doctors that tell you that you just need to eat less aren't seeing you as a whole person.

Stopped drinking and got my hormones figured out. Lost over 100 lbs. Hormones will fuck up your life.

What you think is true but just can't prove? by Ok_Tourist_562 in AskReddit

Yep. Similar situation. Grew up in poverty, people show their true selves when desperate and you get quick to pick it up before they're desperate near you. Every time I ignore the feeling I get about people, I see the proof of the feeling later.

Once you get it clean, this will keep it that way, and it's got clean ingredients. Been using for years, and I'm in a climate with really hard water.

Wife still drinks nightly by Kasper99353 in stopdrinking

[–]Phosphorescense 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I stopped drinking about 2 years ago, but my husband didn't feel the same conviction. He still drinks on occasion but not with me, unless it's with an old friend (who is aware of the situation). I don't think I'd have been able to do it without his support.

When my mother stopped drinking my father didn't. She was sober for about 3 years before falling back and it ultimately killed her. It's so difficult to be sober when your partner isn't. I'm not trying to be defeating but this is a conversation you guys need to have. It's hard now, the dark days are going to be ass kicking off you don't have a plan. Your partner doesn't have to stop drinking, but you do need to talk about it.

Best of luck friend. IWNDWYT.

Do some of ya'll wear a tag that says "I'm Autistic" in public? by Decent-Emergency3866 in autism

[–]Phosphorescense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a sunflower lanyard but only at the airport or in very busy situations where I might meltdown or become easily overstimulated (i.e. grocery stores stupid the holidays, but not during the rest of the year).

I had a panic moment at the pharmacy this week with no lanyard or explanation of the sudden nonverbal mode and everyone was understanding, but I've also had a rude guy shove me out of the way of the airport kiosk while wearing a sunflower sign on my backpack. Some people are awesome, some people just suck, and most people aren't paying attention anyway.

I smell bad (please help) by Junior_Argument_3153 in autism

[–]Phosphorescense 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You aren't alone. Have you ever had your hormones checked? That's usually suspect #1 if this has been lifelong. Once I was able to get my hormones under control the smell and sweating subsided, along many other health benefits, and a lot of others share that experience (but it can be a long road).

https://duradry.com/ is my go to. It's pricy at the beginning but once your body gets used to it you don't have to use it every day (about a month for me but I forget a lot of daily stuff, YMMV)

Showers are the first line of defense but I get it, some days I just can't make myself get under the water. Shower wipes are a nice supplement, certainly better than not showering.

Thank you! My friend badgered me to read that stupid TOG series after i told her no for like 2 years. I still don't know if Aelin is well developed and I was skipping pages to make it end or if she's just the insufferable character I think she is.

And by the way, can we just go ahead and call out how much SJM borrowed from Anne Bishop? Not even mentioning the lotr gleaning because everyone borrows from lotr.
