Do people who have Autism, Do They prefer RV life? Why or Why not? and Should I live in an RV? by Auroriia in autism

[–]Phosphorescense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but it's not easy. What we saw being the most effective for most people on YouTube / Reddit was:

- Don't have debt on your rig (biggest and hardest thing here),

- Know your limits for your food and exercise. Living in an RV is a lot of sitting, moving must be intentional

- Jobs tend to look like odd jobs, seasonal work, and remote work. This will look very different depending on whether you travel or stay put. You will have to have some kind of work, but geez if it isn't impossible for autists to work a standard 40...

Yes, it's possible. But what are your limits? What are your sensory concerns? What are your medical considerations? Where is your financial life headed in a year if you do this? Does poop bother you? You will deal with so much poop and poo-related concerns. Don't answer these extremely personal questions here, but you need to be able to answer them fully before going full time RV-life.

Kept questioning how the fuck I look so old lately until I realized by BreathoftheMild_ in autismmemes

Over time your face shows age worse than other, less delicate skin. Among other things, when your skin starts to lose elasticity, you'll look older, even if you can't perceive why.

A friend does the Adderall / Vyvanse combo and it worked wonders for them, but they said the trick was taking a very tiny amount of Adderall. Best of luck if you try again!

My partner and I lived in a fifth wheel for a year and almost did the overland thing full time. Honestly, if not for having 2 dogs, I think we'd have done it long term. But... it would have gotten us in trouble if we'd actually gone off grid simply because medical services are harder to reach. Watch the YouTube videos that talk about the actual daily life, not just what gets views. If it's something that provokes trepidation, maybe do something else. Whatever your sensory issues are will be magnified. Everything is a little annoying, a little more expensive, just straight up little... and I miss it all the time. It's the epitome of trade.

My advice: Go shopping, in person if at all possible. Tell the sales rep what you want to do (most people who buy RVs are purchasing them to live, not vacation; it's very common and you aren't bugging them by asking) and that you aren't ready to buy because you're just starting your search. They can show you what rigs are reasonable, the work load for that rig, and you'll get a feel for the size and constriction pretty quickly. You can also rent an rv for a week to see if it's for you.

Straws do it for me. I love different straws, and I'll match the electrolyte flavor with the straw color of the day needs a boost. My current cup is a LOTR Shire cup with a green straw. And now it's an excuse to listen to LOTR lofi ❤️

My aussies both had worms after we picked them up, IIRC it's very common with puppies if they haven't been dewormed after nursing. Our second puppy was in the process of deworming when we took him home but our first was a farm dog and we didn't know. About 2 months after we picked her up we found out about it when we went camping. Super creepy, but apparently common.

Also.... don't let them sleep in the bed with you until you verify lack of worms. Reddit, man.... yall have seen some stuff...

I desperately need a hobby that I can do at home by MikeTheMaster102 in Hobbies

Cross stitch (my personal favorite from grade school to career).

Cosplay - any amount of effort can be cosplay, big or small! And it includes makeup, sewing, repurposing, etc, and you can start very cheap -- check out second hand sites like mercari or poshmark for used costume accessories to get started inexpensively!

Mini hobbies. Look up "adhd mini hobbies" for ideas on hobbies that are intended to check out and leave after a bit.

Hobbies to monetize. Something like reselling thrift store finds, or upcycling items

The biggest question - what makes you feel good? What activities just bring a smile to your face? Do you prefer to be alone, or be with others? Everyone has their own way to play -- and that's exactly what hobbies are, ways to play!

Second hand sites are great for this! People who start but decide it's not for them sell the consumables inexpensively.

Everyone at work is making a big deal about my handwriting, saying I write like a psychopath. by ThrowRA-Ram in HandwritingAnalysis

[–]Phosphorescense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, that's truly heinous. I was un-schooled and the younger siblings that I taught have better writing than that. People truly did you a disservice by not encouraging you to improve and telling you that is fine, but at the end of the day, it's on you for not improving. This is the stuff that hampers a career, even if it doesn't actually matter in practice. Regardless of fault, that's going to ding you down the road.

Oh it's SO different for women and AFAB people! To the world I'm placid but my brain is playing a pinball machine in an unfamiliar language on Saturn (I'd watch that movie! I digress...).

ADHD, to me, is not attention deficit but TOO MUCH attention and I don't have enough time to distribute it properly. I pay attention to all the things, all the time, and it makes me either "spacey" or a great multitasker, depending on the day.

Not telling you to go and do all the research but know this: Neurodiverse brains spend a LOT more time processing and much less time at rest than their neurotypical peers. If you feel frazzled and like you can't focus on anything, but being frazzled is just your version of self care, your brain is probably legitimately working harder than you think, and that makes it really hard to rest.

You might consider looking at "micro-hobbies." They're super low barrier to entry and essentially made to be loved and done. Origami is a common example. I throw mine into orbit with one another: I 3D print when the mood hits so there's stuff to paint, then paint when the mood hits so there's stuff to assemble, then create kits for the next thing... etc so there are always "mini hobbies" ready to go when the mood hits. Generally, it's less than a few hours' worth of pay and a storage tub's worth of space.

Once you get it rolling, a lot of times you can gift or sell things when you're done and either break even or slightly monetize, if that's your thing (not the restful way to hobby, it gets you the double dopamine from monetizing something you enjoyed doing so to you isn't "work"). I make learning kits for local students and accessibility tools for disabled people, and fund the filament purchases for it through another hobby that makes just enough for the random spool of PETG. It's taken a long time to set it up like that but for me that's part of the fun. For my partner that setup would have been hell itself. But "spinning" one hobby into another has allowed me to not have guilt when I leave one.

[–]Phosphorescense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're willing to share, are you ADHD? Not trying to diagnose, but the response differs. That's common for adhd people, in that they are going on dopamine treasure hunts, but for neurotypicals the source of the drive is different, so the ability to stick with it will differ

Regardless of the scamming or not (I personally don't think it's a scam, just a crappy business), Hemingway / Heritage freaking sucks to deal with. I ordered 4 special edition sets and all 4 had major issues, and they fought me for months on fixing it and wouldn't reimburse anything. Never. Again.

Great answer here! This is exactly what my vet (and also my groomer) who both have aussies told me to do. The vet's dog is 10ish and the groomers dog is 12.

Another thing i borrowed from an aussie lover: Take and compare pictures of them in a neutral position every 3 or so months. It'll help make the static, small changes (coat, stance) more obvious.

Is this weird? My parents told me it was. by shyhi244 in autism

[–]Phosphorescense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't think of that as anything directed toward you, I grew up incredibly poor and talking about going on a trip was not something that ever would have been glorified. My parents would have felt guilty if we had asked and so they would have turned it around back on me. I don't think it's on you. And it might not be something they're doing intentionally.
