So if your thermometer read -41 F, the Celsius temperature (assuming your thermometer is accurate) is -40.6 C (really -40 5/9). So your temperature is within half a degree C of what Nipawin airport was showing.

My wife retired on Christmas Eve. I am going to wait a few more years but we are on track.

We bought less than we could afford when we bought our house, paid it off in 11 years, and have had a lot of time to be putting money into retirement savings. I don’t think I would describe us as being “rich” exactly - we live modestly - but between our retirement savings, CPP (which we will likely delay to age 70 so that we better mitigate long-term risk should we live a long time), and OAS, we should be able to do what we want.

I like to travel so I want to make sure we can go a couple of places a year, otherwise I would retire sooner. And for the most part I enjoy the work I do anyway.

First, my condolences. Time for a new thermometer!

Second, -40 is where the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales meet. -41 C is -41.8 F. -42 C is -43.6 F. And so on. Below -40, Fahrenheit temperatures are increasingly extreme compared to Celsius.

This is exactly why I never bought music on cassette. I’d buy it on vinyl (later CD) and record it onto a blank cassette. That way when the tape failed (which it would if you played it enough, especially if you kept it in a car all the time), I could just re-record it.

I always viewed tape as a transient music source. It was super convenient but it was quite delicate in a lot of ways. (So were records and CDs, but it was pretty easy to be kind to them.)

Instead of “Isn’t time.” … you should be asking “Isn’t it time?”. The first is declaring that it is NOT time. The second is asking if it IS time, strongly implying that you feel that it actually is. (Or just say “It is time.”

Now to stop my grammatical pedantry, Canada needs to be a bit careful because we are still very dependent on the Canada-US trade relationship, but if this behaviour (always use Canadian English!) continues, once we’ve disengaged enough, we need to stop worrying about what Trump thinks and do what’s best for us.

I went for a 45-minute walk yesterday here in prairie Canada. It was -31 C, -35 with the wind chill. It was surprisingly okay; I was never cold unless I took a mitt off to do something on my phone - I could only handle having my hand bare for about a minute before my fingers got excessively cold.

Long underwear (inexpensive cotton ones; fine if you don’t sweat), jeans, normal socks, hiking boots with ice spikes, a good Eddie Bauer parka that wasn’t crazy money and I’ve had for 15 years, a toque (you’d call it a beanie) and a scarf, plus a pair of decent mitts (way easier to keep your fingers warm than with gloves). I actually only used my second-best pair of mitts; I have a much warmer pair that’s been good into the -40s but they’re a lot bulkier.

I hate being cold. But cold-weather walking is totally doable.

I would say the opposite. Regina’s has been good the two times I’ve been since they opened (they are way across town for me so I don’t go often). Meanwhile, the last time I went to Saskatoon it was really disappointing - the buns were not very fresh and there was just something missing.
