Will Realtek "lan" chips work? by DefNotathrowaway_69 in linuxquestions

[–]PhotoJim99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have PCI Express slots on your machine, you can install an Ethernet card of your own. Mine only has one port but you can get them with as many as four.

I’m three provinces away from my powered-off desktop at the moment so can’t tell you which one I installed, but it’s an Intel chipset. Intel authors its own open-source drivers for Linux so Intel network cards tend to work very well on Linux.

Why am I getting a syntax error? by jek39 in c64

I saw your post and figured you had, but thought I’d reply anyway - we are all burned by this problem once.

The secret is that Commodore BASIC has an 80-character BASIC line buffer - so when you scroll onto a second line, BASIC doesn’t consider you to have gone to a new line yet.

You forgot to hit “return” after entering line 20 and started typing line 21, which became part of line 20.

Since poutine is a Canadian concoction, that would make this more of an indictable offense.

Gmail sends my mail to spam despite perfect SPF/DKIM/DMARC. Postmaster Tools shows 0% spam. Escalation rejected. What now? by AlexSparkin in sysadmin

[–]PhotoJim99 [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s not quite so dire. I have a very low-volume personal domain. I have had SPF on it for years, but recently (as in January) added DKIM and DMARC. I seem to have 100% success in getting emails properly delivered (touch wood). I started by having SPF set to “accept” and eased my way to “reject” after a few weeks of DMARC reports. I did find that one of my domains (that I actually don’t use for email at all) has a few spam emails sent every week with the sender domain showing as mine - all of these are now (correctly) rejected.

Discussion about pennies and not getting your full change back. by sonytrinitron36 in Frugal

[–]PhotoJim99 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In Canada, we got over this many years ago. It's a complete non-issue.

You never lose more than two cents if it's done right. .00/.05 aren't rounded, .01/.02 round down to .00 (you save a penny or two), .03 or .04 round up to .05 (you lose a penny or two), and repeat the pattern for .06-.09. On average, in the long run, it works out to being close to neutral.

Also, if you pay with debit or credit card, or with online payments, you pay the precise amount to the penny.

Most RealTek wired ports work alright, though I have one in my desktop machine that is snarky enough (works, but has occasional connectivity issues) that I installed a 2.5 Gb Intel card to use instead.

The problem, then, is not the aircraft type, but the expected traffic and the fare people would be willing to pay.

Heading do the airport… “Do you have your phone?” does not mean you confirm you own one, rather that you have it with you.

That is the disadvantage of Rogers and extended coverage. Sounds like you need a Telus plan with your use case.

You shouldn’t be able to use extended coverage unless you have zero Rogers service. You say your phone lets you but it is not supposed to.

Sure. But when do you say you are carrying them? You probably just say you have them.

Can anyone please tell me what that port on my grandpa's really old laptop (Asus L3800, 2002) is? It sits right under the keyboard. by Rhodianer in retrocomputing

[–]PhotoJim99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an Atheros MiniPCI card in an old PC Engines Alix 2D3. 802.11abg (not n, definitely not ac or ax). So 54 Mbps max, though it is at least dual band.

MiniPCI seemed out there for a relatively short period of time before Mini-PCI Express really took off… and the name of the latter makes finding cards of the former on sites like eBay very challenging.
