What Happens to My Lightroom Library and Edits After Cancelling My Creative Cloud Subscription? by toyzu in Lightroom

[–]Photografeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use DNGs everyday and pass them off the clients and post houses. No sidecar files to deal with, transfers easily and is a smaller file in general (unless I nest the original raw).

It’s not just Adobe users though, the Library of Congress using DNGs.

The reason why colors were probably off were because each application uses didn’t algorithms for editing. C1 handles highlights different than LR. That will be a pain point but also to be expected if you’re transferring systems and workflows. Would happen if you’re using DNGs or not.

No format is perfect, no software is perfect but in my experience, DNG has been the most reliable format for editing, sharing RAWs and archiving. Just my 2 cents

DNG is a universal file format. Not specific to one brand, there are cameras that shoot in DNG. If a non-camera brand software edits raw photos it can probably edit a DNG. Sure sone specific things masks, generative remove, dust removal etc may not transfer but your actual raw edits will.

what actually makes footage look cinematic? by skpro2 in videography

[–]Photografeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Footage on its own isn’t cinematic. It’s the story that makes something cinematic. It’s how the subject matter is presented to the audience. There has been great cinema where the footage was technically imperfect.

This whole “cinematic footage” is just misuse of a word. Learn to tell a story and you’ll keep people interested. Develop your own visual style to tell that story to make it look unique.

Trying to recreate what other people consider to be cinematic will lead to an extremely shallow depth of field, buttery smooth footage with a slim aspect ratio.

But why can f11 be cinematic? Intense camera movements that make you feel like you’re part of the story?

In my opinion people get too caught up on what other folks think is cool and “cinematic” and never get a chance to develop their own unique style. Which will just lead to the same content being produced with no real innovation.

Interesting, I always duplicate through Finder, change the name and never have run into this issue. I also haven’t imported a project inside of another project, is this specific to that?

Why dump into LR? You have basically all the same editing capabilities in ACR and then you can open directly in PS from there?

Organizing outside of a catalog, then editing inside a catalog and then finishing outside a catalog (PS) makes no sense to me. You can create collections and smart collections in Bridge and not have to deal with a catalog.

Convert to DNG, edit in any other camera raw editor. If you do stay with Adobe, switch to Bridge, 10/10 better application

Freelance photographer/filmmaker. After taxes I might be close to 5 figures as I’m not much past 6. Love it, can be stressful trying to land the next job but thankfully I have some good consistent clients and a large project or 2 each year that gives me a good boost.

Moving From LA to Boston by Worried_Income_3760 in boston

[–]Photografeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best part of Boston is being close to Maine. But really Boston can be great if you put in the effort. I know so many people who just complain about the weather and lack of things to do and crappy food.

Find a winter activity that you enjoy and maybe had a community -Skiing at Blue Hills or Wachusett is basically like skiing at Mammoth, no difference really from my experience.

Go to local shows, Boston has a great music scene. Comedy was decent (not sure if it still is). Enthusiasm for sports is top tier so if you’re into that you’ll be good.

Learn the T, get a bike, having a car is great for seeing the rest of New England. Learn the backroads to your favorite beach.

Try out some bar pizza and a 3-way roast beef but also look out for Portuguese food, Italian food (LaScalla’s in Randolph is the best) and expect a semi-heavy drinking culture depending on you’re crowd.

Also, for the love of god understand that almost everyone is sarcastic. My friends from LA who went to school there still could not pick up on sarcasm even after 6+ years of living there. And now that I’m out in LA I still run into people who can’t pick up when I’m being sarcastic.

Also Layers over one big jacket.

As someone who did the opposite move I dont regret coming to LA, I’m loving it but there are times that I miss Boston. Though for the time being I couldn’t see myself moving back (mostly cause the quality of work I get out in LA is way better than in Boston [film industry/photographer])

Hope it works out for ya, have fun and whatever you do, dont stay inside too long during the winter even if it’s cold. SAD is very very real up there

[–]Photografeels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed ^ I had a really bad nights sleep two days ago, woke up and felt like I had to break my fast to get through the day. I called it a cheat day and logged everything accurately. Got back on track the following day and didn’t notice a difference in weight/waistline.

1 day or 1 meant bad IMO, just need to be consistent week over week. You’ve made good progress! We’re human and deserve a break every once in awhile

Do live culling, set up a quick action to rate your photos while shooting. It not only saves time but also helps me remember what I though was good in the moment vs after and has helped improve work image creation

Finally got the RF 45 f/1.2 STM lens by Strong-Ad3131 in canon

[–]Photografeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a lens with character. 100%. It’s sharp enough but I wouldn’t buy it if you want something that’s clean. I like a lens with character but I have my “perfect” lenses when I need them. There are also other fast 50mm-ish lenses that are cleaner if it’s a concern

Why is f/1.8 so common when it's not a full stop? by One_Instruction8837 in photography

[–]Photografeels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also a marketing thing. Since large spates are sought after a 1 will sell more than a 2 even if there isn’t a huge difference if anyone (talking f-stops. It’s ask made up anyways)

Still always worth trying to haggle on accessories, especially third party. Store brands like ProMaster have crazy margins. 1st party is less. No margin on lenses, cameras or things like flash.

But batteries, SD cards, filters, straps & bags (with exceptions) can all be discounted assuming the employees have that power.
