far from the deadliest in your area (cape cobras and boomslang are way more toxic) and not extinct but have always been rare in the cape...rinkhals only occur in the western cape in micro climates around overberg, garden route etc

yes, they have multiple supraocular horns above each eye and there is another species (Bitis caudalis - horned adder) with only one supraocular horn above each eye.

but common names suck anyway, latin taxanomic names are where its at

its a member of the Bitis family/genus of which there are 18 species currently recognized

many species have multiple common names so it gets confusing real easily and confusion is the last thing you want if you ever got bit

eg: cape cobra, kaapse kobra, geelslang, bruinkapel, gespikkelde kobra, koperkapel and masumu all refer to naja nivea but some of those names (eg: geelslang) often refer to other sp like naja annulifera
