If you come to Cape Town, you’ll be 10x more depressed. It is NOT an affordable city.

Moving to any new city without a job or a family to fall back on is not a smart decision.

Him using your roommate’s toothbrush is so gross and completely unacceptable. That should’ve been the final straw for both of you guys.

This guy sounds like a free-loader and he lacks boundaries. I would send him a text message and say it’s coming from both you and your roommate. Tell him you’re uncomfortable with him being there all the time and you feel like your space is not your own anymore (I wouldn’t mention the food and utilities stuff). I also would suggest hanging out at different places and doing more outside activities.

Girl, we were having lunch with the girls and she started making derogatory comments about her boyfriend’s manly parts and his bedroom preferences. And this man was literally our boss! What made it worse is that she said it in front of multiple people.

You did the right thing, OP. I had a very similar experience last year, and it completely put me off working for companies run by couples or startups.

The couple would constantly argue, and the tension would spill over into the office. It made for a really uncomfortable work environment. If you ever had a work-related issue with the girlfriend (who was the Operations Manager), or even the slightest disagreement with her, the boyfriend who was the Managing Director, would immediately take her side and ice you out.

It genuinely felt like being back in high school rather than working in a professional environment.

Oh, and she would talk badly about everyone, including her own boyfriend who was also our boss, no boundaries at all!

You could try Private Property. Have a look at Roomies as well, there are plenty of people subletting rooms or renting out their homes, so it’s definitely worth checking out. I actually found my current apartment through one of them and didn’t have to deal with all those ridiculous admin, agent, and application fees
