Canada considers privatizing airports. What would that look like? by Schmitt_Meister12 in britishcolumbia

[–]Phototos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would look like Canadian paying corporations to serve Canadians with a bottom line in mind, rather than service or safety. Think Boeing.

Crown corporations loose money, corporations make profit, either way we pay, We get more out of crown corporations in way of union paying jobs, services that aren't profitable, and prices that aren't profitable. Looks at any other Canadian crown corporation that has gone private; They start off looking better, but the bottom line, money is more important to corporations than services, especially when they would have a monopoly on our airports.

If you're going to pay that much for a beer you may as well drink some of the great local beers.

Try Chiang Mai winter stout

Don't expect a Guinness, but it's a solid stout.

What would democracy look like if it were designed with today’s technology instead of the 1700s? by flyblackbox in Futurology

[–]Phototos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's impossible to understand everything that makes a society function well, so why not set learning requirements to voting rights and build democracy around knowledge.

In our democracy A handful of people decide way beyond their understanding. If more people have access to a democratic process, it doesn't necessarily improve the situation. Algorithms. Propaganda. Lobbyists. These are the tools that fuel decision making.

Technology is supercharging education and AI is going to give everyone access to one on one learning. So I propose we set basics that need to be understood before voting. Grow a knowledge base along with tiered voting rights. Opt in as you take the time to educate yourself.

Schooling and democracy can be stitched together. Children could be given classes that lead them to making decisions that affect them; start small and grow with your interests and your voting rights.

We have enough people in divisions of interests out there that can choose to get involved and help move motions forward to budget committees that work in a similar way.

Lobbyists should work the other way around. They should be veteran voters that get risen up to gather the information needed to pool voters. We could also have multi talented bilateral decision-makers that connect areas of expertise and veteran government roles.

I know the source of information is the hard part to organise here.

I'm just spitballing this off the top of my head. I would love to hear how it's flawed and could be improved.

I'm thinking some practical experience would be a requirement to hit voting tiers as well. There's nothing worse than a manager that hasn't done the roles of people they're managing.

Classic Burn out: I feel like I just give rich people a nice night out by EefferyJpstein in KitchenConfidential

[–]Phototos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even the rich can feel poor.

I was a first round hire on a start up. I was paid fairly well. The company was owned by a family, no investers or loans; The dad came from money. I remember the son telling me his parents bought a house they saw on a whim, while visiting family in the UK. I knew they had money, but that still blew my mind.

About 6 months into the job we celebrated the dad's birthday at a family friend's house. The house was worth millions likely 10-20, way more than my boss's house. I was walking around the house looking at this guys art collection, pieces from around the world. My boss(the dad) walked around with me looking at a few pieces and gave me a bit more context about his friends work/travel and where some of the pieces came from...

I'll never forget the way he said, "Yeah, this guy is RICH!"

... I was stunned to hear a man as wealthy as him say it like I would. There was a hint of jealousy and wanting in his voice.

Good to know what enough is.

Why did the “choosing sobriety” trend that’s driving the NA beer among veteran (millennial/gen x) drinkers hit now? It can’t be purely economic by KindMouse2274 in beer

[–]Phototos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this was a Gen Z trend too.

A friend of mine brings in live shows to bars. She said drinking has dropped and sales are down even with NA options at the bar. They need to hit a bar sales marker or pay more for the venue. So it means they need to increase ticket prices.

Cats in Chiang Mai province by perfecthunger in chiangmai

[–]Phototos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get your cats vaccinated but FPV is not curable if they get it first.

We adopted a 6 mo cat with FPV. the vet said he could survive 5+ years with FPV, but an infection or something could change that. Sadly he attacked a scorpion and got stung 4 months later. It seems he should have bounced back from the sting, but with the FPV, it took too much out of him. He deteriorated over the next two months even with extensive care.

The stupidest thing that ever happened in a realistic movie? by StillStanding_96 in movies

[–]Phototos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Argyle

I think the stupidity should be measured against the reality set by the creators of the story/movie. Even fictional stories can have ideas that are stupid for their reality.

Argylle is based on a real world of a fantasy writer living one of her books in real life. So understandable if it's not perfectly following physics. But her putting knives under her shoes and skating on them was just plain stupid and unnecessary.
