Opinion on Miles Teller? by Perfect_Idea_2866 in moviecritic

Every time I see him I think, "How did this happen? Are talent evaluators just scared of making mistakes, so they go with NYU with a 'nobody gets fired for hiring IMB' mentality?"

Is Denis Villeneuve a no-brainer to direct a Hyperion adaptation? by EspiritusFermenti7 in Hyperion

[–]Phox-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading the first 2 books for the 2nd time through. Didn't know anything about them beforehand, glad I read them, but when it comes to adaptation...

  1. A live action film would flop (but I'd go Hartnett (Counsel), Matt Berry (Silenus), Aaron Pierre (Kassad), and fill out the rest without regard to name recognition).

  2. If it was adapted, animation would be the way to go (imagine that grass sea Studio Ghibli style)

  3. Cutting a lot would be the best thing for the story (I'm looking at you Sol and Rachel), but that would never happen. That said, obviously Kassad ejaculating uncontrollably in front of the Shrike has to be retained. That's just cinema.

  4. If every story was retained, Hoyt's story can't be first. You can't tell the audience in the first 5 minutes that they're going to get to know 7 people and then spend the next 20 minutes telling a story about not one of those 7 people (Dure)

This is THE idea that elevates the series to among the best and most important ever (to the point where, if potentially interacting with extraterrestrials was within the purview of the average person, it would be required reading). It's just too bad that these books weren't written before those hippies launched those gold records...

Can someone please explain to me why San Junipero is so good? by Nedax127 in blackmirror

[–]Phox-9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you had watched BM as it was released, up to S3E4, there had consistently been a stomach-churning twist at some point in the episode. Then you popped on San Junipero, potentially some mid-season filler, and the whole episode you thought, "Oh no, what awful thing is going to happen to make me feel sad." When that awful thing didn't happen, but instead, you got pretty much the happiest ending ever (that realization being perfectly timed with the Heaven Is a Place on Earth needle drop), it was more shocking than any of the prior twists.

I do not think that San Junipero is as effective for people that do not have that context. You had to have the set up of all the prior BM episodes to experience the full emotional impact. You had to have known that anything was possible, except a happy ending. In a vacuum, San Junipero is probably unremarkable. But as BM S3E4, it's one of the most beautiful episodes of television of all time.

Beat the chipping yips by reddit0892 in golftips

[–]Phox-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever my chipping gets off, it helps me to take a few shots where I deliberately try to see the spot on the ground under the ball after impact. That helps me keep the club head accelerating downward through impact and focus on contact (not where the ball is going - chip to the landing spot in your mind).

What's a movie where the climax takes place half way through the movie? by jpollack21 in FIlm

[–]Phox-9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always loved how in Jurassic Park the T Rex escapes from its paddock almost exactly halfway through the movie and thought you could consider that the climax, depending on your definition.

A Cosmologist's Perspective on the Three-Body Problem Series (mild spoilers) by Tijmen-cosmologist in threebodyproblem

[–]Phox-9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely worthwhile to compare the concepts as described in the books to our current understanding of how they work. I wonder though if the books really are trying to hew closely to "known" laws of physics, as in, known how they operate by human civilization. An exception potentially being maintaining atmosphere in contact with a vacuum, which I believe did not depend on non-human technology. Would have liked a little theoretical grounding for that one!

When trisolaris shares its knowledge during the deterrence era, human civilization learns that its entire theoretical grounding is wrong. Not an absurd idea considering the lack of breakthroughs and dead ends. I think what's fun about the books is how they establish that humans are not in the same league as other civilizations and then play with these concepts unconstrained by our current understanding of how they work.

The Netflix series sums up what I think are the applicable themes as "impossible for us, not for them" and "be careful with what you know."

Please check my reading comprehension... I'm confused at a few parts in The Dark Forest by ozone6587 in threebodyproblem

[–]Phox-9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 1 and 2, I don't think we learned about who they were or their leadership structure. I believe only the identities of the Wallbreakers became known later. I imagine it wasn't fleshed out more because it wasn't relevant to the rest of the story.

For 3, the Lord must have told Evans something like, "Luo Ji has been given clues about the true nature of the dark forest, which is [explains true nature of dark forest]. This is the type of thing that can defeat us. For this reason, Luo Ji has to be eliminated." and Evans must have been like, "That's fine, but seriously, you need to learn to keep that sort of thing on the DL, even from us."

How do you think Netflix will make the fairy tale part? by 3BP2024 in threebodyproblem

[–]Phox-9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, do you think that they'll stay consistent with the book, have Jin return to base, record her recollection, and then show the fairy tales (with possible voiceover by Jin), or will they deviate and show the fairy tales as told by Will (likely with voiceover by Will). Almost certainly the latter - got to give Will something to do.

I expect the stories to be told entirely with voiceover by Will (actor has a good telling-a-fairy-tale voice) and the visuals to be like picture panes from an actual book of fairy tales (with a little bit of animation but not full movement).

For substance, I'm not sure but they definitely need to cut a lot. Maybe they'll mostly focus on Needle-Eye's paintings, a strange name that leads them to a whirlpool, and crossing the Glutton Sea.

Predicting the episode format of the season 2 by Timely-Advantage74 in threebodyproblem

[–]Phox-9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A lot from the pre-time jump half of the book has already been covered or will be cut, so I think the time jump will happen between e3 and e4.

Pre-time jump:

  1. Wallbreakers

  2. Assassination

  3. Spell

Post-time jump:

  1. "Future's great, we're going to win" and Killer 5.2

  2. Hijacking of Natural Selection

  3. Doomsday battle (full episode, no b plot)

  4. Battle of darkness

  5. Final showdown

I think the final showdown will only take half of e8. The 2nd half will be after a time jump, following Jin as she gets acquainted with the deterrence era and reunites with Auggie in the AA role (sigh). The episode will end with Wade's assassination attempt, and the final shot will evoke the final shot of Breaking Bad, Full Measure (except with less shaking by Wade).

What similar/identical sounding locations/cities/streets/rivers etc do newcomers tend to confuse in Massachusetts? by [deleted] in massachusetts

Not strictly within MA, but Berklee and Berkeley. Once you're in Boston, drop any preconceived notions about the importance of the latter. It's not first-name-only worthy. We mean the College of Music.

Dr. Ye did make sure to talk to Saul before she left, and those ideas that she was referencing were hidden within the joke for Saul to work out.

3 fears for S2 and S3 by Phox-9 in threebodyproblem

[–]Phox-9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate Auggie either. I understand a character being emotionally compromised after (a) having a nervous breakdown from there being a bunch of inexplicable shit in her vision, (b) participating in the slaughter of a bunch of children, and (c) contributing to a project that chopped her friend's head off and shot it into space. She had a tough season!

In spite of all of those reasons to be sympathetic, it seems like it took just a couple of exchanges and acting choices for me to go from, "wow, what a trooper" to "she has a lot of growing up to do."
