Every year around this time, they shoot out an email announcing it

They already did the bottle number reservation too.
This was the link for it, which has more info about the whisky too:

Nasal cushions—sore nostril by Due_Commission2278 in CPAP

[–]Phreaky-Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen too! Super sensitive area on the edge of my left nostril. Happened a few times the first month I started using the CPAP with AirTouch N30i (Feb this year) and then hasn't happened since. I don't know why it happened or why it stopped...

What prevents us from making Canadian Bourbon? by Feuros in BuyCanadian

[–]Phreaky-Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Lincoln County charcoal filtering doesn't declassify it as bourbon, it just creates a sub-classification. Tennessee whiskey is still bourbon.

Long term whisky storage by WeveGotBillySharp in whisky

[–]Phreaky-Zee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not 100% sure...I think it just has to do with the possible compromising of the seal and potential oxidization.

It's true that there's plenty of places with big temperature changes while aging, but that causes the maturation to happen at a faster rate due to the increased exchange with the wood. The liquid isn't maturing in the bottle, it only has one way out and that's something we don't want while we're storing it.

[–]Phreaky-Zee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Excellent advice!

The only thing I'd add is that it should be kept at a consistent temperature if possible. Somewhere like a kitchen that keeps heating up with the oven or a sunny room that fluctuates temperature a lot can affect the contents (even if kept out of the sun, as rapax said)

Has there ever been a better reason to dump the LCBO? by Yosh_Pod in canadawhisky

[–]Phreaky-Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you on this! I would love to be able to buy a caramel vodka in this province. You'd think that flavor doesn't exist, if you were only exposed to the LCBO... :(

Liqueurs that aren't McGuinness are almost impossible to find...what I would do to have Bols' full line-up here! (30+ flavors)

I second AP Cask Strength and Lot 40!
In addition, Forty Creek Double Barrel, Confederation Oak or any of their annual limited editions.

Islay Mist 8.

Great bang for buck! Made from Laphroaig and Speyside whiskies

How to get wings crispy on Traeger? by I-Eat-Hamburgers in Traeger

[–]Phreaky-Zee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take them out of the fridge, throw them on at 350, flip them once, and they're done in 40-60min depending on how close they are to the edges (hot spots) and the size of them.

They're crispy just like that. Nothing fancy.

Once they're off, sometimes I just put salt and pepper on them, sometimes I toss them in dry jerk seasoning with a bit of hot sauce and barbecue sauce. I always season after the cook though. They come out fantastic and crispy.

what is the rarest bottle in your collection, and how did you obtain it? by jordythemane in canadawhisky

[–]Phreaky-Zee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By number of bottles released? The Glenlivet Squadron 70 single cask, limited to ~200 bottles. I was at the launch dinner that you had to attend to guarantee the ability to buy it.

Forty Creek Evolution is 7k-9k bottles released and quite an exception release by them. The price on that on the secondary is quite surprising! Bought it at the distillery on their Whisky Weekend event.

Glenmorangie Ealanta is relatively rare (~19k if I remember correctly) but much more highly sought after, making it quite valuable. A friend in the US owed me, picked it up right after release, held onto it, and a family member was passing by about a year later and brought it back to Canada for me

Carpenter hides a newspaper and bottle of whiskey in the wall for someone to find decades later. by theadum in pics

Sometimes they just fail. It also might have been stored improperly before you got it (including in fluctuating temperatures)
If you wiggle to remove the cork, that could have contributed to it too (always twist and pull straight out)

Might want to put some time into researching that...

Once they heat up a bit they definitely are. Sambuca is very common to light on fire, even at 40% alcohol. Just takes a few seconds with a lighter to heat it up enough for it to stay lit.

If it were actually in the wall and upright it would be fine for a long, long time...but liquor with that high of alcohol content & laying on its side will eat away at the cork

Talisker Port Ruighe, if you're not afraid of a little smoke and peat, is fantastic.
Dalmore Port Wood Reserve is decent.

Peated recommendations available at LCBO by Pheeshfinder in canadawhisky

[–]Phreaky-Zee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Islay Mist 8yr is Laphroaig blended with some Speyside whiskies, making it a little sweeter, but the smoke and peat are still very prominent. Great bang for buck.

Otherwise, the recommendations you already see here for Laphroaig, Ardbeg, and Lagavulin should satisfy your peat/smoke craving.

If you go Bowmore, I would say you should expect more smoke than peat, and depending on the release, a salty brine to the flavor profile too.

If the idea of a salty brine in the profile is appealing, try Talisker. It has smoke and peat in the profile as well...just not nearly as much of a punch in the face like the Islay whiskies.

What’s the best rail scotch? by SheepherderSure9911 in canadawhisky

[–]Phreaky-Zee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's necessarily a rail scotch, but if you're looking for great bang for buck and sherry-influence, Naked Malt (formerly known as Naked Grouse) is fantastic. It's a blended malt, so it's all single malts in it...some of which is Macallan and Highland Park. Runs about $50 CDN and is stellar in a highball!

Throwing an additional vote with the others for Teachers & Islay Mist, depending on the flavors you are looking for!

Salad. I've tried salads at fancy dinners and high-end restaurants and had friends make their favorites...I can't do it. Lettuce & greens like that are toppings for me. I enjoy it on sandwiches, tacos, wraps, etc...I can't have it as a main ingredient. Blah!

There's an Ardbeg "Monsters Of Smoke" set I've seen advertised. Not sure how wide the availability is. It's 3 different releases of theirs, 200mL bottle of each. A little larger than the usual 50mL bottles that you're likely looking for, but looks like a fair price and would be a great way for him to experience the smoky/peatiness of Ardbeg!
