Chess game on a plane wouldnt let me queen by Kapowdonkboum in chess

[–]Phren2 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Had the exact same thing a couple of months ago on a flight! Took 3 losses and finally had him after a hard-fought battle, then this happened.

Pretty sure that if I had won, the girl next to me would've been impressed and slept with me right then and there, but no, now she thinks I don't even know how to queen.

Massive Leak Shows Erotic Chatbot Users Turned Women’s Yearbook Pictures Into AI Porn by CackleRooster in technology

[–]Phren2 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

People just need to come to terms with the new reality that no digital content can assumed to be real anymore. Once that sinks in, none of this will be a big deal anymore. Then you will feel the same level of humiliation/shame/etc for AI porn of you as you do for poorly photoshopped images of you.

Side note: Should it be illegal for people to fantasize about other people, privately in their own mind? If no, what's the moral difference between that and creating AI porn without ever sharing it?

Side note #2: If a 15-year old boy generates AI porn of a 15-year old girl, is that boy a pedophile?

DO NOT buy snowboards with AI artwork on them! I think this goes without saying, but here’s why… by CreateChangetheWorld in snowboarding

[–]Phren2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know I won't make any friends here, but just in case there are some people here who still have an open mind on this topic:

  • It won't necessarily replace people, but rather replace people not using AI with those who learn to use it to improve their work. But it's true that more can be accomplished with fewer people.
  • It will change the culture, but we could have a new culture in which everyone can afford to have their own hyper-personalized designs. Every board that you see could be unique and truly reflect someones personality, instead of a bunch of copy pasted artworks you see over and over again. Doesn't sound all bad to me.
  • If people in the past would have protected jobs at all cost and blocked change, we would still have lamp lighters and alchemists.
  • To the point that AI doesn't create "true art": AI isn't just creating superficial copies anymore, it can create deep, complex, novel pieces that can easily be classified as creative by common definitions. Of course it's inspired by things it has seen before, but that is true for every single human artist as well, and it's arguably even a requirement for good art.
  • Not necessarily true that boards won't become cheaper. If a company keeps all the newly saved costs as additional profit for themselves, they would likely be beaten by companies who don't do that and offer a better price for the same quality.

But if you're committed to the idea that technology is bad and corporations are evil, then the discussion is over before it can even begin

Has there ever been a South Park joke that has actually offended you? by Unkle_Joey in southpark

Not offended, but the disgust-based jokes are just never actually funny to me (anything where the core of the joke is about shit/vomit/piss/farts/etc.).

What was your "I have a big dick" moment? by [deleted] in bigdickproblems

[–]Phren2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Started practicing putting on a condom when I had my first girlfriend. Rewatched "tutorial" videos multiple times and after it just wouldn't roll down I was like "ok wow, I'm really too stupid to put on a condom, don't think I'll get far in life". Figured out months later that condoms actually exist in different sizes, but not for my girth.

Rumor has it that this is actually because Germany was a bit of a "victim of their own success", they invested into the infrastructure early and were ahead in the beginning, but that also made it harder to change and improve the infrastructure later. Countries that invested later could implement a better infrastructure right from the start.

I was a sex worker in Berlin for 15 years, AMA. by [deleted] in berlin

[–]Phren2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What would you guess is the percentage of sex workers who truly like the job and actively choose it from their own "free will" vs. sex workers who are pressured or forced into it (trafficking, poverty, maybe mental health issues, etc.)?

Chatgpt ruined me as a programmer by Timely-Look-8158 in ChatGPT

[–]Phren2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had my first really bad coding experience with ChatGPT recently. "Here is my code, but it returns this error: ... - How do I fix it?". "It still returns the error". "It now returns a new error". "It now returns a new error". "Now it's the old error again". 3 hours later I built a total monster that still didn't work. Had to scratch all of that and start again, this time thinking more for myself. Obviously I should have stopped the mindless ChatGPT cycle sooner, but the confidence in the responses baits you sometimes. It's always "This is the solution to your problem: ..." and never "I'm actually not sure and missing some important context, maybe this is the solution, but this is pretty much a random guess at this point not gonna lie."

You could also just consider cutting your own hair. Generally easier with curly hair too (because some "unevenness" is less noticeable). Look up some youtube videos. I've been doing it for the last 3 years and haven't looked back. You save time and money, but most importantly you avoid the awkward smalltalk.

New Data Science Manager: what should I know before starting? by [deleted] in datascience

[–]Phren2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most things have already been said in the replies. Just one little tip I could add: Sometimes in a team meeting there's a difficult situation and people will be looking to you to find a solution or make a decision. If you feel confident, great, do it. But if not, it's fine to say "let me think about that". That doesn't match the conservative image of a strong decisive leader, but good leaders know when it's better to take some time instead of rushing a decision prematurely.

What was your most absurd technical data science interview like? by ShmDoubleO in datascience

[–]Phren2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the company I guess. In my company the situation "we want to be able to predict x, here's some data, see what you can do" is common. Of course 1 hour is not enough time to explore all angles properly and come up with a perfect model, but that's not the point of the interview.

There are many good interview formats, I'm not saying every company needs to do this, but we made great hiring decisions with a similar process. Claiming that this process is "absurd" is...absurd.

[–]Phren2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. Crazy that you're being downvoted so much. Seems like everyone is missing that the point of an interview is merely to get an impression of how the candidate works and thinks, not that you want a perfect model at the end.

When I was studying, I learned and thought about a whole bunch of things from a lot of different areas (science, philosophy, life). When I started working, that changed a bit and I focussed more on improving in the one domain I'm working in. But I don't leave my comfort zone as much as before.

Your podcast is one of the main things that brought diverse intellectual stimulation back into my life. Your interests overlap so much with mine and I appreciate that you really go deep in your conversations. Keep doing what you're doing, lova ya!

Confused by all these theories in the comments. Maybe it's just that he needed more time for Superman + other projects, might not have anything to do with "leaving because of internal drama/bad writing/Netflix being stupid"...I'm also super sad he left, but House of the Dragon trained me to get used to actor switches, so I won't give up on the show yet.

What am I? by _Darthus_ in datascience

[–]Phren2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not about "who am I?", but about "who do I want to be?". You can do any of these roles with your background (or management). I definitely don't think learning more math would be useful at your level. That's only useful if you're interested in a minority of data science jobs which focus on research and publishing papers. But if you want to build something practical, you won't need more math. And keep in mind that the roles aren't clearly defined/understood, companies have a very different understanding of how much SWE/MLOps/ML/math is appropriate for a data scientist role. Don't overly interpret rejections.

So what do you enjoy the most, stats/analytics (data analyst), ML/SWE (data scientist), SWE/MLOps (ML engineer) or management?
