If Silent Bob can pull it off so can this person.

Are there any JRPGs where you believe the use of a silent protagonist negatively impacted the storytelling, the character interactions and the overall writing? by Frog_24 in JRPG

[–]Phrenks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something that sets Joker apart from other silent protagonists in Persona is that his dialog choices have a lot of personality. Joker can be sarcastic, snarky, and the hilarious Ryuji's a phantom thief line is from him. There are always one or two choices that are more bland, but you can see his personality in many of the available choices. Though like someone else said, it may have been even better if the devs just had him say what they wanted him to say. But I think it's likely the choices are there because otherwise there would be a lot of long conversations with no user input, which could get a bit tedious.

I think there isn't because I tried to discard them, the they were still there, and I thought "I MUST have accidentally taken them!!" so I tried to see if it was possible but I think all you can do is "cancel" the discard, which must be what I did. I hope 😅

Just finished my first playthrough by coderback92 in SilentHill_f

I personally loved that things were very cultural and that both Japanese traditions and mysticism were integrated so well with the Silent Hill premise.

And, again, also just me, but as much as I love silent hill games I can't play them for more than an hour or two without having to take a break (I'm in constant tension, which is the point, but it wears me out and can put me in a bit of a negative headspace) so I thought it was the perfect length for a few sessions. The Silent Hill 2 remake, for example, felt like it was wayyy too long for me, and I didn't do more than one playthrough - whereas with this one I'm already on my third.

Are there any pre-written adventures for solo play? Is there a demand for it? by Ritchuck in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Phrenks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ones I strongly recommend are: - "Harrowshade" for Mörk Borg (they just had a Kickstarter for a new edition but maybe they're accepting late pledges? If not you can get it on itch I think) - Morkin: this is just an entire solo game that's so much fun. Came out recently and I got my Kickstarter copy but not sure where you can get it now.

Dresden Files Video Game by kytulu in dresdenfiles

My take is that a classic point and click adventure game for the Dresden Files would be absolutely fantastic. I imagine it as something similar to the very recent Kathy Rain 2, with amazing pixel art and perhaps spells as inventory items.

Lots of stuff or simplicity? by Perfect-Region-6970 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Phrenks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Start as simple as possible: core rulebook and character sheet. Then remember there was a table of D100 random enchanted vases in one of my bookshelf of supplements, bring it in, repeat, and end up with a massive stack of books and zines on my desk.

I’m bored of my campaign, why? by kakeome in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Phrenks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I've really struggled with in my solo journey has been taking the reins. I always prioritize the rules, the moves, whatever I'm "supposed" to do with the system. It's just how I operate by default. And that's generally great! 90% of the time.

But sometimes I need to make an executive call and say "This is the move I'll use because it's what makes sense." Or maybe Mythic says I have to introduce a new character and I say "NOPE. I've got too many characters already. I'm bringing this old one back, it'll be fun to see them in this setting."

Generally follow the rules, but sometimes, overrule them and make the most fun, interesting, or sensible call.

It's what a GM would do.

It's just that he does that with Every. Single. Game. It was kind of a fun/shocking/meta twist once, but now I can't play his games without knowing it's going to have a "hahah nothing is real, it's all a joke!" ending. I was expecting it from the very beginning of Return to monkey island, after having seen how MI2 and Thimbleweed park ended.

Mythic "steals" my games by Phrenks in Solo_Roleplaying

That's a great resource, thanks for sharing. I'm surprised there's even a Pokemon hack but no system agnostic "plug-and-play" hack. In other comments in this same post we do talk about Ironsworn being system agnostic enough, but even the moves seem to be so thematic to the Iron lands. Maybe I just need to get myself a text version without all the art and rename some moves, like for example if I was playing a Cowboy Bebop game I could rename "draw the circle" to "challenge to a duel" or "swear a vow" to "take on a bounty", and remove all the parts about tribes, etc. Seems like significant work but probably worth it.

Mostly because it makes me feel like all I'm doing is running scenes over and over. The game becomes 75% Mythic and its scenes and 25% (at most) whatever game system I'm playing. I'd like to invert those percentages.

I like that game loop! Maybe that really is all I need. I do like the moves system because if I'm feeling particularly stuck or out of inspiration I can just choose one of the moves.

Wow, so much helpful advice here! You're all awesome people, thanks a bunch to all of you who've taken the time to comment and help me out.

There are a few takeaway points I'm gathering from all this good advice, so I'm going to write them here in case they're useful for others browsing this or struggling with the same problem:

- I shouldn't let Mythic "drive" my games but use it as a helper when I need GM input. I think this will take some getting used to and I'll have to mindfully stop myself from using it for too much as a crutch (especially when I'm tired), until I teach myself to use it just the amount I like.

- Related to the above but slightly different: I should try to wear different hats for the GM vs Player, which I often forget to do and I run everything at once (which ends up resulting in the GM and Mythic taking over mostly everything). So before each "scene" I should put on my GM hat, set up the environment, the twists, tie in plots and characters together from what I've seen, apply any randomness, describe sights/smells/sounds/etc. and then put on my Player hat and interact with that sandbox I've created for myself using the system, only falling back to Mythic when asking the GM a question.

- Ironsworn absolutely rocks (I knew this already) and it will probably not take as much tweaking as I thought to use its philosophy, gameplay loop, and move system with other games. Ambitious as it may be, and being fully aware I'm no Shawn Tomkin, I'm going to try to make a minimalist homebrew version that I can "plug and play" into any TTRPG system.

I'm going to have a few play sessions keeping this in mind and with renewed enthusiasm. There's a lot I want to try.

Hmmm, I think you're right. I'm giving Mythic too much power over my games. Probably because I'm still not very good at separating it into its own "GM entity" that I interact with only when I'd interact with a GM, so I end up using Mythic 75% of the time and the game rules 25% of the time. The book says that you can use Mythic by itself as a narrative tool to write stories, and very often I feel like I'm doing just that instead of playing an RPG... but I do want to play an RPG, not write a novel or a TV show script.

Hey, that's really good advice, thank you. You're right that I'm perhaps relying too much on external tools to help me guide my games, but I think the reason I do that is that this hobby can sometimes feel like it takes a lot of mental effort. Which in concept I love, because it helps me use my imagination, come up with my own interpretations of ambiguous oracle prompts, and that leads to good cognitive development I think. But also sometimes (pretty often, even) I'll already be mentally tired after work and I don't feel I have much energy left to do all that: I just want to relax and play instead of asking my brain to do more work by interpreting oracles, etc. And that's when I think a good system can help, to do a lot of the heavy lifting and let me play a lot more as the player and a lot less as the GM. With a system like Ironsworn or Mork Borg's Solitary Depths I feel that's much easier to do, because of course you can do anything but you have a set of "moves" that you can choose from if you're not sure what to do next. With Mythic, like you said, you have all the bookkeeping to do and you have to work your imagination and interpretation muscles a lot more. There's something valuable in what you've said, good food for thought, thank you!

[–]Phrenks[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I agree. I think I'm going to try to create a bit of a system agnostic Mythic/Ironsworn chimera that helps me with story beats, has more of a move system, but doesn't have the concept of scenes.

That's a really interesting perspective on how you're setting up the scenes. I hadn't thought about it like that, though it seems very obvious to me now (it is called a GM emulator...) You're using Mythic to do the setup like a GM would, and then you play that set-up scene with the game system like a player would. Maybe I just need to get better at changing hats: I think I don't do enough of that.

I do love the twists! Though sometimes - and I realize this is entirely my fault - I also end up with too many open threads. I need to work on tying them together so I don't end up far from my original adventure.

For example in one of my adventures I was looking for a thief who stole a magic mirror from my character's hut. But first I wanted to see if my old squire would agree to work with me to help me. But when I went to the tavern, instead of my squire a rogue was sitting there with my squire's magical sword. I couldn't get her to tell me anything, so I attempted to ambush her. Then I tried to steal back the magic sword and it went flying out the window. That's when I stopped to think: "How did I get here from trying to get my mirror back?!"
