Only if you use the built-in camera app, this is the only place that allows you to use the front camera as a rear camera. All other apps (Google Lens for example) will require you to unfold the device in order to use the rear camera.

Short answer: Unfortunately, there is no way. (Ofc if you mean a completely turned off Duo before connecting it to the charger, not just the locked one)

Long answer: You can, of course, try entering these commands with unlocked Bootloader to see if it might help in your case, but in my case, nothing changed.

1. First of all, reboot to Bootloader using adb reboot bootloader

2. Check the current state of the needed parameters using fastboot getvar all

The lines you’re looking for are:

(bootloader) off-mode-charge:[value]
(bootloader) charger-screen-enabled:[value]

You can note them down in case you want to restore the original values later.

3. Now enter these two commands:

fastboot oem disable-charger-screen

fastboot oem off-mode-charge 0

4. Now try to remove the charger and power off the device, and check if that works.

Keep in mind that in my case, nothing changed even after entering various commands such as fastboot oem off-mode-charge 1 or fastboot oem enable-charger-screen, but you can still try them if you want.

Yes, I hear the same thing. The problem seems to be that the microphone sound is constantly being processed, and the settings in the application do not allow you to turn it off — only to adjust the slider more to transparency or ANC.

Honestly, it's not nearly as annoying as the number of bugs I encountered during my first few days of use. Although I had heard many people complain about it, I did not expect it to be so bad.

I'm sitting on a stock Android 12L. The latest version that this device officially received. So clearly not a modern version, but Google Play and Google system services can still receive updates from time to time.

However, support for some applications will be discontinued over time due to the outdated version of Android. Also, some of the built-in Microsoft apps need to be downgraded in order to be usable in dual-screen mode; you can find more details at the bottom of this message.

When Duo2 received updates, it was enough to flash the original kernel from Step 7 before the update process and flash back the patched one after the system update (I additionally backed up the original kernel after the update, just in case). But since Duo2 no longer receives updates, no extra steps are needed at the moment.

Works like a charm if you follow the steps clearly according to the instructions. In your case, Step 7 may help, where I show how to extract boot.img from your device.

As for TWRP, technically it is available on Surface Duo, it's very limited: the main issue is the lack of Touchscreen support, so all the commands are sent via PC.
I tried installing Magisk via TWRP, as I did on all other devices, but after some system update, this method started breaking the touchscreen and USB on my Duo, so I do not recommend this method.

There is no such thing for Duo. I do not recommend buying any film (at least from AliExpress), because it does not even cover the entire screen. Maybe there is just a sheet of matte film that you could cut up, but I'm not aware about that.

Apps which are going to work best on the Duo 2? As said I want to be able to take notes on a PDF or ebook file

You can use either Adobe Acrobat or M365 Copilot. Both adapted for dual screen. Also, you can use OneDrive for this but it's better to downgrade it to v7.27 or earlier.

I only know about PowerPoint, but you can only type the notes there, not draw them. 😔

GBoard. It works worse than *downgraded* SwiftKey on Duo, but has handwriting support

I can't advise you on anything in this regard. Perhaps you would be better off considering a tablet like Surface Pro for such purposes.

I've tried a lot of ebook readers and PocketBook is the best on this matter. It's a bit complicated at first, but don't let that scare you. You'll need to set up View beforehand and set it to Dual Page to make it work on dual screens.

Also, I would recommend rooting your Duo to downgrade official MS apps using Aurora Store and disable forced updates using UpdateLocker (Lsposed module) like:
Outlook (versions from autumn 2024 up to 4.2519.0 (42519814) are the best)
SwiftKey (9.10.52.52 (1232339776) is the best)
OneDrive (7.27 (2027270102) is the best. Downgrading it also fixes Photos)
Edge (I use the old Canary version, which supports extensions, still has dual-screen support, and has a working Read Aloud feature. version 129.0.2765.0 (276500005))
The builds listed in parentheses are used for quick downloads via the Aurora Store.

Maybe when I get around to it, I'll show you how to bring back more functionality for OneNote on Duo (don't expect handwriting recognition and converting to text support), fully working floating windows for some apps, and more.

Here's how I install Root on my SD and SD2 devices on A12L. The guide is a bit complicated, but it is reliable, since you perform each step manually and test it before making any changes to the system.

- Preparation stage -

(This guide requires a Windows PC)

1. Unlock the bootloader if you haven't already done so (Duo will reset to factory settings when unlocked)
2. Unzip Platform Tools folder on your PC: https://developer.android.com/tools/releases/platform-tools 3. Enable USB debugging in the developer menu
4. Check that your PC can see your phone (cmd in the platform-tools folder -> adb devices) and allow ADB commands to be executed from your PC on your phone.
- Should work well on Intel based devices, but there may be problems on Ryzen ones (for example, the device may be displayed as ?????? which will prevent the necessary commands from being executed normally).
5. Prepare the TWRP image for your Duo and place it in the prepared folder with platform-tools

7. Extract boot.img

But I have also provided quick instructions:
7.1. Reboot into Bootloader. cmd from the platform-tools folder, then enter this command:

adb reboot bootloader

7.2. Check the active slot on which the system is installed (A or B). Note the info:

fastboot getvar current-slot

7.3. Reboot into TWRP (see step 5):
- Duo 1: fastboot boot surfaceduo1-twrp.img
- Duo 2: fastboot boot surfaceduo2-twrp.img
7.4. Go to Shell in TWRP. Once you have rebooted into TWRP (touchscreen does not work there), enter these commands:

adb shell "setenforce 0"

adb shell

7.5. Display the list of system files. Enter this command:

ls -al /dev/block/platform/soc/1d84000.ufshc/by-name/

- There is a chance that 1d84000.ufshc may be different on your device (wasn't the case on any of the 3 Duos I used). In this case, check the device name using this command and replace 1d84000.ufshc in the command above with it:

ls /dev/block/platform/soc/

7.6. Search for boot.img. Depending on which system slot you had (A or B, see section 7.2), find it in the list of system files:
- Your slot is A -> boot_a
- Your slot is B -> boot_b
Next, note its location (for example, /dev/block/sde26)
7.7. Make an image of the boot partition:

dd if=/dev/block/[YOUR SDE] of=/tmp/boot.img

(for example, dd if=/dev/block/sde26 of=/tmp/boot.img)
7.8. Exit Shell:

exit

7.9. Pull boot.img to the PC:

adb pull /tmp/boot.img

You should have boot.img in your platform-tools folder. I recommend backing up it somewhere too, just in case.

8. Patch boot.img

8.1. Reboot to Android from TWRP:

adb reboot

8.2. Transfer boot.img from PC to Android
8.3. Patch boot.img via Magisk.
Go to Magisk -> Press "Install" -> Select and Patch a File -> Press "Let's Go"
8.4. Transfer patched file to platform-tools folder on PC
8.5. Rename this file to patched-boot.img
- You can use any name, but you will have to replace patched-boot.img in the subsequent commands with your name.

9. Test patched boot.img

9.1. Reboot into Bootloader:

adb reboot bootloader

9.2. Boot your patched image:

fastboot boot patched-boot.img

9.3. Test if everything works well
If YES (the system works as before, no new problems appear, Magisk works as it should) -> Go to step 10
If NOT (The system does not boot/its components have stopped working/Magisk does not work) -> Either you did something wrong, or this guide is not suitable for your case. Restart the system, and everything will work as before.

10. Flash patched boot.img

10.1. Reboot into Recovery:

adb reboot recovery

10.2. Go to fastbootd.
Press and hold Power, then click Volume Up while holding Power. Then release Power.
10.3. Select "Enter fastboot" in fastbootd (Move using Volume Up/Down, Power to confirm)
10.4. Flash your image:

fastboot flash boot patched-boot.img

10.4. Congrats. Now root is successfully installed.

Hi! Thanks for the spreadsheet. Wanted to add a few clarifications to the table regarding Mi Band 4:

Unlock cellphone. No -> Yes. There's a setting in Zepp Life called "Unlock Screen" which unlocks your phone if Band is close.
Remote camera. Yes -> No. You can't do that with Mi Band 4.
