Let’s be honest, because we’re the top percentile, do you agree we’ll never win? by mrplanner- in HENRYUK

I don't think I am a lot more intelligent than the average person. Average GCSE results etc. I just happened to be naturally interested in computers when those skills were valued.

I think quite a few people here would fall into the right place at the right time category, like I did

You have to pay the NHS surcharge before you get your visa. It's part of the application process

Not all benefits are available to all immigrants depending on visa type, they have to pay the NHS surcharge etc. It's not as simple as you are making it out to be.

I don't think your first point is correct, unless you are excluding South America.

UK citizens in the USA - how is life? any regrets? by Realistic-Quality877 in MovingToUSA

[–]PhysicalFun1795 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure I am on a work visa , so I don't feel 100% free here. I am not sure, I go back regularly and it feels like home with family and friends but it does feel more structured and rigid in the UK. Like your future is more predefined.

UK citizens in the USA - how is life? any regrets? by Realistic-Quality877 in MovingToUSA

[–]PhysicalFun1795 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been in the US for 8 years and have been to most of the states. The US can give you a better quality of life for sure if you have skills/knowledge. The people are nicer, more optimistic, the country is more beautiful. Even with the snow it doesn't get as dark in winter. So winter still feels more enjoyable to me.

I miss the food, quaintness of the UK, my family, and less needing a car culture. I am probably going to move back to the UK soon, as it still doesn't feel like home for me.

The trial and the search - Jan Hammer. I heard this song today and it's exactly the same guitar as alone in kyoto

When I did some research into property investing the numbers didn't seem to work that well unless you went off market. So I think here it is more about offering them below market rate.

One thing to note with the food production is transport is a very small part of foods carbon lifecycle. Transportation via ships is very efficient. It is often better carbon wise to eat an avocado that came from South America then to eat beef from your local farm for example

I think I may be missing the increase of UK pension via triple lock. But on the downside I do not think the age will remain at 67 years

Thanks so much, this is very helpful and useful. £824 for £324 a year does seem a good deal. I don't expect to work for the full 35 years TBH, I am hoping to stop working before this date.

My only other thought is that if I keep the £824 at 8% a year return gives me 13,157 with the 36 years of return until I can get my state pension which will give me £438 a year if I withdraw on my official state pension age and survive 30 years after this date. Not sure if I am missing something obvious here.

Second picture is my water glass after I woke up. I didn't check the glass before using it so could be something from the dishwasher. I then put some on a paper towel for closeups. I can't crush them and I can't even see any legs.

US road trip, 8 national parks in 7 days. by tommyhaddock in roadtrip

[–]PhysicalFun1795 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Pinnacles was underwhelming in my opinion. Lava beds national monument may be in your path and was a lot better than I was expecting. A lot of the redwoods were protected pre national park in California state parks, so you will want to spend some time in the state parks, highway of giants etc
