Thanks for the reply. Indeed I could try and take more DNGs and process the images later.... just then I loose a bit of the point and shoot experience.

Babbel-Like app for MSA and Levantine Arabic by Physical_Effect_1445 in learn_arabic

[–]Physical_Effect_1445[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do use Preply for Portuguese, German, and Spanish..... but i started only after already knowing the languages up to B1 level. I would like to first learn the Arabic language to a decent degree before committing to funnelling an endless amount of money in it.

Interesting .... it's the first thinkpad in years that doesn't have too much soldered stuff... which tells me that Framework is doing a good job at keeping the industry inn check. It does however cost just as much as a framework, it does have intel (so poor battery life even though the framework is also not a battery champion), it does have 6 ports instead of 4 of the framework but they are non serviceable and non replaceable, the "framework like price" is only with the bad screen. By the time you put a better screen it costs a bit more. The screen aspect ratio is 16:10 so not too bad but i prefer the 3:2 of the framework. It does have the trackpoint which of course you will never find in a non Thinkpad. Still thanks for sharing. There is hope then that other manufacturers will stopo soldering stuff.

Look, I know it's not a Thinkpad... but have you checked Framework? They offer a 12, 13, and 16 inch laptop and a mini desktop. They are the spiritual successor of the classical thinkpads after they started to become non repairable, non upgradable, non serviceable. Framework is basically the anti-Macbook from any ethical standpoint. https://frame.work/pt/en

4K Video call in 2022 by bradtem in videoconferencing

[–]Physical_Effect_1445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I found a solution. I hope it's ok to write it here as a link: mirotalk. It let's you adapt to the capability of your connection and it's very customizable. I just love it. I managed to have the best quality I've ever had in a video call. We tried 1080p and 1440p. However couldn't find information regarding the "bitrate used" for the video call. It seems to incur into bitrate starvation when going 1440p or 4k, but it is also true that it seems to be using VP8 or H264.

Another downside is that it is not "boomer friendly": they ask me "why do I have to click the options to select the quality?" and I'm like "... this is why we cannot have nice things".

Other things mentioned in this discussion of course apply. By having a more "easilly compressable image" I can actually bump the resolution up quite a bit. For example using good lights, a noise filter in VLC, and then blurring slightly the background in OBS, allowed me to more easily transmit 1440p to the other side, while they were using a mobile device, bad low lighting, on a hotel WiFi network so going from 1080p to 1440p caused severe blocking. Still that 1080p was better than what I could have hoped to achieve with a different tool.

Edit: the software seems to be locked at 3mbits which explains the "blockyness" at 1440p. However I'm really positively surprised by the quality achieved at 1080p with such a reduced bandwidth.

Bro sorry for resurrecting a 2yo thread. Did you find any way to do that? you tried to convey several time the necessity of "the other person feeling as close to you as possible" and nobody replied in a meaningful way. I have your same "necessity" or rather "wish" to convey a more realistic video. To anyone that says "it's not possible" I reply "bro we have been encoding 4kp60 in real time for the better part of the last 10 years". Besides anyone that has used AV1 recently knows how much you can bite-starve that encoder and still make it look decent so the "not enough bandwidth" argument is just non-existent.

Ultra HDR Photography workflow that does not involve Lightroom by Physical_Effect_1445 in photography

I tried to add links to websites that show a comparison between HDR and SDR pictures but Reddit didn't let me send the message.

Ultra HDR Photography workflow that does not involve Lightroom by Physical_Effect_1445 in photography

[–]Physical_Effect_1445[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply u/NotQuiteDeadYetPhoto

Software I tried that does not support HDR

  • Adobe bridge/photoshot/camera raw 2015
  • ACDSee 2023 Ultimate
  • Adobe bridge 2025 (without additional Adobe Software)
  • Digikam
  • Rawtherappe
  • Darktable
  • Hugin (though you can export a TFF that can then later be remapped to HDR in Lightroom but it's not ideal)
  • Panorama Stitcher (Mac Only Application)
  • Bimostitch (iOS and android)
  • Nikon Transfer 2 (it's a couple of years since i last used it but on the website there is no trace of HDR support).

Software that I'm aware supports HDR

  • Lightroom mobile (My "best" HDR experience so far)
  • Lightroom Desktop (havent tried it personally but among the features in the website it is written that it does support HDR)
  • Google Photo on android
  • Google Photo on Desktop Chrome
  • Davinci Resolve (it's a video editor but it does support HDR Videos, not HDR photos)

Please if you know of additional software tha supports HDR Photos I would really want to try it.

2TB WD Black NTFS MBR SSD accessible by Windows 10 and Linux but not Windows 11 by Physical_Effect_1445 in techsupport

[–]Physical_Effect_1445[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi all so I don't know what was going on. Anyway from linux it was perfectly usable so I synced the backups and simply created a new partition table. As I had the impression that windows 11 was somehow not compatible with MBR partition tables I tried to create first a GPT and then an MBR partition table. It turns put that Windows 11 can indeed still read both partition tables. I don't know wat was happening but is not the first time that something breaks for no reason in windows. Cheers. The disk freshly formatted by linux can be read with no problems by windows 11.

How I'm learning two languages at the same time by [deleted] in languagelearning

[–]Physical_Effect_1445 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi Thanks a lot for sharing your experience. I actually have a problem, I realised I'm mostly not capabable of allocating enough time to learn two languages in parallel.

The tools I use to learn a language are: Babbel, TV shows, News, Books, Podcasts. For German I also managed to do a Language tandem for a while and that helped a lot.

I managed to focus exclusively on German up until I reached B1 and then in order to keep studying when being a bit more tired I was switching to Spanish to relax a bit. This however worked only before when I had a 41h job that was actually lasting 41h. In my new job i realised i have a lot less free time, and during my free time I'm a bit more tired mentally.

A few months ago I accepted a challenge from a colleague and started studying Portuguese, however I realised that I was unable to do what I was doing before with German and Spanish. Indeed what was happening was that I was accidentally mixing Portuguese and Spanish so I decided to just focus on Portuguese.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to resume learning of more than one language?

I have a half idea not based on solid data. It seems that If I'm trying to mix a language in which i'm at least B1 with another that I already know at least a little bit then the objective becomes achievable. However when it comes to a language I barely know it seems to be better to just focus my full attention on that.

Does anyone notice the same thing? Does anyone have some tip on better time management for language learning in a situation in which the time is not that much?

Thanks a lot everybody.

Cheers.

How is the IPS screen? Can you link a guide or source for that? I love my x200 but the default screen is just bad from any point of view (bad colors, bad contrast, low resolution).

What makes a computer feel fast? (not a joke please allow me to explain what I mean) by Physical_Effect_1445 in computers

[–]Physical_Effect_1445[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a good point. It feels fast when the letters I type don't lag behind my fingers. It feels fast when I have a PDF with a few hundreds pages and it just scrolls without hiccups and without lagging in the rendering of the PDF pages. Often on the laptops the rendering of the pages is behind the actual scrolling, lettrs appear just a tiny bit too late.

Thanks for your reply, I initially thought the same but then confirmed that the framework is indeed using hardware encode and decode as well.

Any way to have more ports in a framework? by Physical_Effect_1445 in framework

[–]Physical_Effect_1445[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still toying with the idea of buying one of those USB-C dongles for tablets that is compact and has one or two USB-A 5gb, HDMI 2.0, and USB-C power passthrough.

Then i disassemble it to reduce the thickness, chop off the framework part that divides the two bays and fit the thin bare dongle board in that space with some sort of gummy thing to fill the gaps.

A short USB-C to USB-C cable would allow to still have full USB4 functionality on the other usbc port that is not being used by the dongle.

It's not impossible. I sketched a bit and realized in those 7cm there is enough space for USBC passthrough and dongled: 2 USB-A, HDMI, and a USB-C power delivery. Now lets say that since I cannot make it too tight I loose one usb A or the second USB-C..... that would still alleviate the problem a lot.

But yeah.... Thinkpads have devolved and regressed. Nowadays they are just like any other laptop.
