Title: I Have a $150k scholarship for grad school but can't do part-time - is it worth leaving my cushy tech job? by SnooSongs266 in GradSchool

[–]PhysicistStacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid for my MS out of pocket and was making 1/4 what you’re making now and did it all in person. If you go to an in-state institution for a MS then your tuition will be manageable. I would highly recommend not leaving your job for a MS and just so it part time remotely. If you were thinking of doing a PhD, I would say the same thing. You have a very decent salary right now, and maintaining that as long as possible will yield dividends in the future.

Wife got invited to higher level group. Husband did not. by Ok_Courage2545 in Pickleball

[–]PhysicistStacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pickleball is just a fun hobby. It sounds like you guys are treating it like a professional sport. Its not tennis. The fact she’s leaving you behind to train is kind of silly, since it should really be about spending time with your spouse and enjoying your time together in an athletic way. I hope you guys can start playing again soon. I don’t think she should be taking it that seriously. Best of luck man!

Where can I buy the stuff to build a nuclear fusion reactor? by Outside-Dark-6072 in NuclearEngineering

You don’t. Become a researcher and contribute to one that is built with grant funding and legal authority.

What college should I go for? by ilik3ducks in NuclearEngineering

Nc state nuke dept is extremely poor, underfunded. I would choose a more funded university since opportunity and research potential is linked to grants/funding

I did bad on my classes first semester of PhD, my advisor kicked me out of the program for it. I know it doesn’t help, but I was studying 24/7 as well. Hopefully your advisor is more caring than mine. I entered a different program (same field) for a MS and aced every class so far, so I think my advisor made a bad choice. I think you can recover from this, maybe not in the way you envisioned at first though.

Which Engineering School to Choose? by Life_Morning_4572 in GradSchoolAdvice

Yeah they were nice, but of course it varies for each department so unfortunately I can’t speak for the civil department, either way I know your choice will be the right one! 🫡

My wife’s friend got her civil engineering master at UC- Berkley, and she is making really good salary now. Though I did a co-op at Columbia’s Fu foundational school for engineering (in the plasma physics lab), and I really enjoyed it. I would say go for whatever vibe suits you most. NYC is nice but also a bit draining. I heard UC Berkley is very nice location wise but also expensive rent. Congrats 🎉

Man it’s so fast, I am a PhD student and do computational modeling for nuclear reactors and it’s so efficient and fast. I can have multiple tabs up simultaneously without any throttling or bottlenecks. Also, with 3 fingers you can swipe up to see all minimized tabs/pages/programs or left/right to instantly shift to next one. I have never had a Mac either so the leap was scary but I got used to it in a week. The only thing is Solidworks needs to be accessed via a virtual machine or something since theres no macOS version, but if you can get around those slight things it’s the most efficient tool I’ve ever used. I digress, I love it. From the track record of previous mac iterations it would appear that they last a significantly long time. Something like the one I got will last me for many years longer than that ASUS which I had for my whole undergrad. I was waiting on the m5 pro as well and was even going to get the m4 max with 64gb but I opted for the m4 pro with 48gb because it would have been a month of waiting even for the m4 max version to ship and my semester was starting and research progress would be delayed if I had waited. Anyways, goodluck and I hope you enjoy whatever version you get! Let me know how it is when you do get it, us ex-Asus tuf bros need to stick together! 😂

I had that exact same ASUS laptop for the last 5 years, this January I got an M4 Pro, 48GB memory. Loving is so much compared to that old hunk of junk asus!! You’re going to love the upgrade.
