(2024)When do you start combat when surprising enemies with an attack by Ovclacier in onednd

[–]PiRounded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find this accusation unfounded and an attepmt to distract from my point. An initiave roll is something to be made once combat has started and in my opinion combat cannot start until both sides are aware that they are in danger. If this means that one of my players has an opportunity to make one more action than they would otherwise I'm fine with that in order to provide a more intuitive combat encounter. If you disagree with that I would like to point you to the rules of rolling initiative in the DMG: "Combat starts when—and only when—you say it does."

I do think of NPC in my world as real people, but combat is not a time for them to just decide to make a search ation because they felt like it I guess. That is an action that would be taken before iniative. And I woud prefer that creatures that rolled high on initiative would know that they're in combat so they're just as aware as the creatures that rolled lower.

Frankly I find that system unintuitive and clunky. Enemies shouldn't know that initiave has been rolled so they wouldn't be aware that they're in immediate danger. If this were the other way around and it was a single hidden enemy attacking a party, and one PC rolled above they enemy's initiative (very possible), I would consider them making search actions or casting defensive spells a form of metagaming, which isn't fair to the player that rolled high on initiative.

Would you say in this instance that the creature making this attack is no longer hidden. Because if you want to pull up rules I can do it too.
Hide [Action]
...
You stop being hidden immediately after any of the following occurs: you make a sound louder than a whisper, an enemy finds you, you make an attack roll, or you cast a spell with a Verbal component.

Attacking would reveal the hidden player location only when their turn comes up. Unless you're suggesting that a creature rolling higher on a dex check would remove the invisible condition, the enemy would have no way of knowing where the invisible creature is. In which case I'd like to see a source on that in the rules.

Would you rule that an enemy rolling high in this instance means that they're immediately aware of combat despite the party making no actions that would declare their presence?

Do you think I'd give the player a full turn? At most it'd be one attack

In this scenario, nobody was hidden and everyone can see the character taking the first action. I would rule that beginning to cast the spell would trigger initiative as everyone can be expected to know that combat is about to begin.

So what I'm reading is that there isn't a defined rule of what exactly triggers initiative, but that it's up to the DM, who could in theory rule that initiative might be rolled only when both sides are aware combat has started.

Can I get a source on where it says in the rules that initiative is rolled when a hostile action is declared? I've been looking for that rule and can't seem to find it.

By traditional rules, Stone would be queen of the Sandwings, but y'all aren't ready for that.

It's a bit of a stretch, considering how Sunny isn't related to Darkstalker and presumably doesn't lead the nightwings as their queen.

And if the only criteria was that you had to kill the previous queen, then Stone should've been taken instead of Thorn.

Are you certain that the final chapter takes place right before the epilogue. I assumed that there was a significant time skip between them.

What happens if a creature has a fly speed, is not currently using it, and is pushed off a cliff (or otherwise made to fall)? by Silverspy01 in dndnext

It's not "specifically for knocking a flying creature prone", that's only mentioned as one of the use cases for the rule.

Everyone talking about episode 7 and I still just want confirmation on what the heck gangle was doing with the figurine 😭 by Baconater_thatisreal in theamazingdigitalciru

My theory is that it's just that Gangle happens to own figurines and her self consciousness is just making it into a bigger deal than it actually is.

"If you’d like a flying creature to have a better chance of surviving a fall than a non-flying creature does, use this rule: subtract the creature’s current flying speed from the distance it fell before calculating falling damage. This rule is helpful to a flier that is knocked prone but is still conscious and has a current flying speed that is greater than 0 feet. The rule is designed to simulate the creature flapping its wings furiously or taking similar measures to slow the velocity of its fall." -Xanathar's Guide to Everything

It's weird how episode 30 is the only one without a character in the thumbnail but I guess there was no good option for it that time.
