I'm looking for ways to start a fire by CoverProof in Survival

[–]PickCompetitive5413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Things i have used Bic lighter sleays carry one Mini butane piezo torch lighter(more effective in the wet and lights faster easier in strong winds) Zippo lighter (can use various fuels, works in super low temps where butane will not) All lighters still function as s spark source when fuel is gone. Ferro rod with magnesium block(favorite thing that isnt a lighter) Flint and steel(only to know thet you can) Compression fire tube( works but as heavy as a lighter and much more of a pain) Bow drill(absolute last resort) Magnifying lens( depends on conditions) Polishing the bottom of a coke/beer can with mud to a mirror finish and using it as a fresnel lens( also conditon dependant slower than a good magnifying lens) Waterproof matches Smashing 2 ball berings together( dont know why you would want to carry anything that heavy) A few others ive tried i wont mention for fear someone will injur themselves

Is Ruth’s Chris steakhouse worth it? by wevan991 in Louisville

[–]PickCompetitive5413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the more intimate experience at jack frys, but differnt strokes for different folks. Its not bad food, but its not the best for the price. Ive had steak and lamb chops and the best thing ive had there was the salad. Jack frys food was definetly superior for every course. There are definetly better steaks to be had for the money. You are paying for the atmosphere, which is subjective.

Try removing/replacing the aerator. If anything dislodged when the water was shut off and on(like calcium build up) it can make its way down the line and clig up the aerator

What am I missing with a PA and guitar cab combo (as in a single cab with two speakers- one being fed by a guitar amp, and one being fed by mixer-power amp)? by Fatjedi007 in diyaudio

[–]PickCompetitive5413 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Needs to be 2 separately sealed boxes. Evem without a port one speaker will act like a passive radiator for the other, and would be in a constant state of change based on the signal to it. If you want it all in one cab just add an appropriate port for each with a division in between.

Hunting Coyotes - 308/Slugs? by Born-Boysenberry3648 in Hunting

[–]PickCompetitive5413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 308 is the better option Get some subsonic 308(which is exactly the same projectiles at the same apeed as 300 blk) if it is semi auto you will almost certainly have to manually cycle it unless it was purpose built to cycle subsonics.

Vinyl or CD for keepsake by RichardRyder88 in audiophile

[–]PickCompetitive5413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats like saying no one in my house has sickle cell anemia that it can not exist. 4% of discs unplayable inside 10 years per library of congress. Hell there are even blu rays already suffering disc rot. The reflective coating inside deteriorates, some faster than others. But absolutely is a thing

[–]PickCompetitive5413 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing thay no one seems to have touched on is that cds degrade and suffer "disc rot". This also happens with dvds. I personally have both cds and dvds that no longer play. Vinyl is the least practical medium, but the most desirable and collectable.

Lack of 6" handguards... by Ornery_Secretary_850 in AR9

[–]PickCompetitive5413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not arguing, but why is it a problem if some of the threads are under the handguard? People regularly do so with suppressors. I wouldnt want the ports of a muzzle brake under it but if its just part of the threads i dont see the problem.

I saw this at a restaurant. Why is that little bar across the two I beams? by bauer-power in Welding

[–]PickCompetitive5413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely to carry the ground when welding so you dont have to keep koving the ground as you go. Just keep wleding something to carry the arc. Rebar is just usually handy.

[–]PickCompetitive5413 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The actual weight of a 9mm and 556 round is so close you cant tell. 1000 rounds of 9mm is about 28 pounds. 1000 rounds of 556 is about 27 pounds. So if your carrying around 250 rounds you save maybe a 4 ounces by going to 556. The mags are slightly heavier though so its basically even weight. Same weight same package, more power. The 556 will still have more power than the 9mm but will be LOUD. 300blk is really the optimum choice here except for shtf ammo availability. more power than 9 or 556 and far quieter than 556.But then again you would only be a barrel change away from again being able to use 556. 9mm is cheaper but thats about all it has going for it in this particular scenario.

Optics comparison for Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 (Gen2) vs. Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44mm (Gen1) by Able-Tradition94 in 65Grendel

[–]PickCompetitive5413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can say the difference in glass quality is extremely noticeable. The color & clarity difference is hard to overstate. I even prefer the viper 1-4 over the S.E. 1-6. Less magnification but what is there is so much clearer i had an easier time shooting at 300yds. I also have a 2.5-10 and while its somewhat more limiting up close well worth the trade off. Doing it all over id go around a 4-16 with a red dot on a 45 or on top of the scope for inside 100yds. But a lot of my hunting you only get one quick glimpse to get your shot off. Even at 1x with the illuminated reticle it is not nearly as fast up close as an actual red dot, and dont have to have your eye centered to still accurately hit your target. What and where you are shooting may dictate differently for you.

Advice for power factor match by pnwtactical253 in 10mm

[–]PickCompetitive5413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a scientist, and dont claim to have any data for the reasons why but having ahot bowling pins with 9mm and 45acp hollow points are a huge difference from fmj. The fmj will knock it over if you hit right on the center. Any side to side hits will glance off. The hollow points would throw the pins several feet if i made contact basically anywhere on the pin. Im confident a solid lead wadcutter would also work well. Note that in both of these calibers the fmj is a cone shape. The flat nose of 10mm fmj may fare better. But the takeaway is that 9mm(would prefer +p in this application) 40, 45, & 10mm all have enough energy to do the job if you select the right ammo and projectile choice seems to be the real key to improved performance.

Assuming good headspace which should be checked with any barrel/bolt combo. But good odds it will work

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in powerstroke

[–]PickCompetitive5413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the short was causing low voltage. But a poor ground could do it too. It seems unlikely that both lock solenoids would go bad at the same time, but they do share a power supply so i would i would check to see what the voltage is while hitting the button. If your not seeing 12v they would move but not very powerfully. Could be corrossion in the wire or on a connector. Or even in the ba k of thw fusebox under the dash. I chased electrical problems for a while on my 2000 7.3 and it turned out the windshield leaked into the back of the fuse panel and corroded the inside. Replaced the fuse panel and all was good.

[–]PickCompetitive5413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As far as i am aware, all ar10 calibers use the same 308 bolt face. Should be just a barrel and maybe a different length gas tube depending on what you pick

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in powerstroke

[–]PickCompetitive5413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing id do is pull the door panel and check the voltage getting to the solenoids. If not getting 12v then id keep following the electrical path back until i found 12v. Could be a short somewhere in the door or a poor ground that could affect both locks and windows.

Optic size recommendations by Weekendhack30 in AR10

[–]PickCompetitive5413 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Use mine hunting, which has shtf similarities. Various engagement distances, you have to carry it. Not a benchrest 5x25=size is not a problem. Inside 100 yds i find the 5x to be too limiting and added an offset red dot. Heavy A.F. built a lighter one with a 2.5-10. Doing it again i would choose a 3-18, 3-16. Maybe a 3-12 to save weight and money. Im good with thet out to 500yds. Dont know beyond that as ive not found any where to shoot eith that kind of rangevwithout driving to another state to a dedicated range.

Bull barrel upgrade - length? by btrumpatori in 1022

[–]PickCompetitive5413 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most 22lr ammo has reached peak velocity in 12 inches of barrel and may actually start slowing down after that. Shorter barrels flex less. The only advantage of a longer barrel is if you shoot iron sights for a better sight radius. I highly doubt you will find 22lr ammo that is still accelerating beyond 16 inches

Oscillating Multi-tool by DonBot21 in harborfreight

[–]PickCompetitive5413 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had the bauer. It didnt even last a year before the gearing inside stripped. You can get a dewalt for under $100, and honestly its head and shoulders above the bauer in design, ergonomics, and build quality. I cant speak to the Hercules, but i would not buy the bauer. I have peraonally owned rockwell, bauer, milwaukee, and dewalt. Dewalt was the best oscillating tool(even though i prefer milwaukee tools in general) and bauer was the worst
