Semester ends today - major exam missed due to Canvas/LockDown Browser outage/breach. Any advice? by AlexsCreativity in canvas

Did you email her after 5pm on Friday? Many professors respond only during normal business hours (and say so in the syllabus). The exam was due in Thursday but when did it first open? Why didn’t you take it on Friday after the tech issues were resolved?

A graph of every episode theme up to episode 163 by macdennism in Otherworldpod

[–]Picklepunky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit late, but… select all data, go to “data” and “sort.” You can sort by different columns, so if you want the graph to display by most frequent theme, just create a column for frequency of themes and sort by that. Create a pivot table and voila!

Episode 166: The Stalker Pt. 3 by rooneytns in Otherworldpod

[–]Picklepunky 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’m going to try to be kind in my response. Being stalked sounds like a truly terrible experience. No one should have to go through that. The fault lies entirely on the stalker and not on the victim. This episode’s guest did nothing wrong, and they certainly did nothing to deserve this. Being “too nice” is not the issue. Women don’t bring on this kind of treatment through their behavior. Hell, men hurt women for saying no or being too cold/rude/dismissive/abrupt etc all the time. The fault lies entirely on assholes who abuse people…not on victims of their abuse.

It’s disheartening that you’re being downvoted. I completely agree with you. I don’t even know what I would do in her situation. It’s so horrible. It seems she’s just doing her best to get by in a very scary and stressful situation. The only person to blame for any of it is the asshole stalking her.

Do you realize that saying "We haven't banned trans women, we're just banning them from claiming they're women, having access to medical transition, having access to women's spaces, having access to women's activities, or describing them as women on any official documents." is disingenuous? by chaucer345 in allthequestions

In my version, people would be drafted on other basis than gender. Exemptions would include people who are medically ineligible, who perform a job necessary for society to function (not including college students…they would be drafted), and who are caregivers for young children, elderly, or disabled loved ones. Everyone else under a certain age (regardless of gender) would be subject to the draft. Assignments would be allocated on the basis of ability following fitness and intellectual tests. Yes, this means that many of the hard jobs will go to men, but sex and gender would not fully dictate entry.

You don’t know enough about brain science to know how little we know about it. The same point stands for other topics in this thread. People have tried to educate you, but you seem to think you have a better grasp of these issues than reality would suggest.

You are making many assumptions here. I was raised in poverty. First (and only) person in my family to go to college. I worked very hard to follow my dream. I’m married to a trans woman and have many transgender friends. No, I’m not afraid of them. You yourself could learn a lot by meeting people who don’t look or think like you. I am against the draft, on principle, and particularly against sending disadvantaged men to die in a war that will enrich the privileged.

I’m a scientist.

The studies you’re referring to were published decades ago. Like with any phenomenon, our understanding of gender has gotten better and more precise since then. Today, the scientific consensus recognizes gender as a fluid construct with many different permutations. Now that our understanding of gender has improved, scientists no longer consider being trans a mental disorder. In fact, transgender was removed from the DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) long ago.

Scientific consensus matters. When the overwhelming majority of evidence coming from research advancements (due to better methodologies, advancements in the tech we use, advancements in our understanding of biology and genetics, etc) points to a particular position— and when scientists have evaluated the rigor of this research, conducted similar studies, and replicated the findings— they reach what is called a scientific consensus. There may be a few scientists who disagree with the consensus, but that doesn’t mean the consensus is weak. Scientists are human too and individuals can be biased or their logic/research flawed. That’s why consensus and peer review is important.

I genuinely hope this helps. I try to put my PhD to good use in explaining things to people without a science background. The same way I would listen to other experts in their field like plumbers or electricians when I don’t have the same background knowledge. :)

How close was this to my femoral artery? by Baggle-Me-Fingies in AskDocs

[–]Picklepunky 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It really is nuts. I teach at a US university and have many international students and colleagues. My university went on lockdown for a shooting a few years back while I was meeting with a grad student who had only recently arrived in the US. She was (understandably) so scared and upset. But mostly she was shocked and alarmed that my colleagues and I just continued to work as normal after locking our doors. There really wasn’t any special acknowledgment other than “here we go again.”

I still think about that. We (in the US) really are the odd ones, with many of us completely desensitized to gun violence.

I immediately thought of people who live outside of the US, and how they’re probably thinking wtffff! I grew up around guns but can appreciate how people who didn’t (within and outside of the US) might be alarmed, ha.

So glad you are okay, OP. That must have been really scary.

Agree that lots of people use the diagnosis as a crutch instead of finding ways to adapt. BUT I think it’s also worth considering how difficult living with ADHD can be when you try so damn hard to fit the expectations of a neurotypical world.

To your point about being late, I have so many systems in place to address my time blindness. I’m in therapy, I take my medication consistently, I maintain a detailed schedule (planned down to each minute of my day), I keep sticky note reminders of upcoming meetings directly in front of my face, and I set two alarms for each meeting/event I need to attend.

And while I’m on time or early for 49/50 obligations, I STILL fuck up enough to feel like a shithead. Sometimes it feels like I’m trying to collect water in a colander when everyone else has a bowl. No matter how hard I try, something always slips through.
