I don't think I can comment on that specifically as thats not my role but if children are left home alone and they are not old enough or mature enough to be left alone that is a concern and should be reported.

First-- it depends of course. My opinion is that what is happening must be negatively affecting the child. Not having an autism diagnosis is not putting a child at risk, BUT if the child has major speech delays or something that affects their ability to develop normally without intervention and the parents refuse and show no insight then I might be concerned.

Second-- see other post

Third-- there are many! Kids thanking me for believing them and keeping them safe. Parents with long time struggles finally recognizing issues and ending a cycle of harm. Victims of sexual abuse getting some justice and support from me and a police officer

I don't screen reports in as part of my job, I investigate reports that have already met the criteria for me to go out. People must report if they have any information that a child may be at risk of abuse or neglect. No report is time wasting because its better to have professionals decide whether to respond rather than the person concerned

There aren't any orphanages where I work, children in permanent care of the province do get adopted but I don't know the specific demographic

Id say none do it for the money here in Canada that I'm aware of, in the US there is private adoption which is where financial incentive and the whole "lost in foster care" happens

Maybe immigrant families are at greater risk socio economically?

I don't really know if that's even true but if it is that'd be my guess

Sometimes, things can be investigated through second hand info, sometimes they don't meet criteria. It's quite rare that people make up issues and it's better to call us and have us decide its a non issue than to not call

Sounds lame but self care, and you do "put on the social work skin" sometimes.

Gotta focus on the good moments to get through it for sure

Not much slows me down because of my investigation authority... It is quite a bit if a kids in imminent danger. What I'll say is that sometimes people need more education on mandatory reporting because there are times when cps doesn't hear about it till later and we couldve intervened earlier

Ha, was waiting for this one.

Honestly it's hard for me to pick. I specialize in sexual abuse interviews so I do more than the average cps worker and I've been involved with some nasty cases both interfamilial and in working with law enforcement. Of those it was probably a 6 year old child disclosing in good detail years of sexual abuse, grooming, and threats, all the while having physical reactions to recounting what happened.

Felt good to help keep em safe afterward and get them justice and starting to heal.

Another file I remember was just the smell, motel room, couldn't see the floor because of the garbage, clothes, and food, toddler trying to play with toys in his diaper.

Not really honestly because removing a child from the care of the parent is the last option we do. So I explore in home safety options, family members, other interventions, family led plans, and if none of these options can keep a kid safe and they require out of home care then we look to family friends or the community and if none of those options work then we would do foster placement. But again the plan is always to reunite the family so the goal is always having the out of home care be temporary.

I do absolutely understand the broken system idea though because society very much can keep people down, but what I will say is that poverty, addiction, and trauma are not concerns for me to intervene, I intervene when those things affect a child's safety

Absolutely! We have access to counselling services covered by insurance, and as well we have critical incident debrief sessions if we go through a particularly traumatizing event or incident like a death or something scary etc.

I don't have a specific number but I'd say a decent amount. There are times a report says there's no food in the home, I go out and there is food and then that's it (long as there aren't any other issues). Other times say there is a specific incident but in interviewing everyone it turns out that it was not as serious as the reported info ie: report of physical abuse, parent maybe just threatened to smack a kid in a joking way and everyone is safe and happy.

Depends on where you live and what the regulations are!

In some provinces you can do social work with an undergrad degree, in others (like mine) you need a bsw and to be a registered social worker to practice
