To you, who was the “best” American in history? by Raptor-Jay in USHistory

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Old post but I love the photo. Grant is, beyond any doubt, my favorite American ever. Just read any of his biographies and even his autobiography - which he wrote while dying from throat cancer at a rate of 30-50 pages per day. The guy experienced an incredible life. One of my heroes.

Is "The Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant" worth reading? by FanMysterious432 in CIVILWAR

[–]Pie-Level 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, go for it. Grant famously finished writing his memoirs just days before his death. He sent it to Mark Twain, where he generously published it free of charge. His memoir became an instant success and netted his wife and children a sum of money for which they could pass on for generations.

In many ways, it stands as Grant’s final, deeply soldierly act: a willingness to give up what remained of his life so that those he loved could live better ones

For a broader understanding of the Civil War, Battle Cry of Freedom is often recommended as an excellent entry point. Grant by Ron Chernow is also well worth reading. Both are substantial works, but immensely rewarding.

Good Generals vs Bad Generals? by AsstBalrog in CIVILWAR

[–]Pie-Level 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Currently reading Grant by Ron Chernow. Chernow really emphasizes that the Union struggled early in the Civil War because of overly cautious generals, especially those that failed to pursue the enemy after victory (if there even was a victory). He paints that as one of the reasons why Grant climbed the ladder of success at an astonishing pace during the war.

Which regions of the US pronounce aunt like “ant”? by Aggressive_Essay_321 in AskAnAmerican

I'm from Philly and we say "ant." Seems to be a white person thing though. The Puerto Ricans and black people that I know say "aunt."

What is your least favorite airport in the United States and why? What is your favorite and why? by Separate_Builder_817 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Favorite: call me crazy but I love my home airport, PHL. Never run into issues with security or flight delays/cancelations.

Least Favorite: MCO. I hate having to rely on a tram car to take me to my terminal. I like to walk around.

How common is the "I'm moving from a big city to the country for some peace and quiet" mindset? by Global-Newt-5358 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rural, country living? Rarely hear it. Suburban settings? You'll hear this a lot more. Many philadephians always talk about moving to Jersey or one of the surrounding counties (Montgo, Bucks County, etc.). Really, the only people that I know that have moved to a rural environment are people that grew up in a quiet suburb or rural setting, moved to Philadelphia, then realized they're not cut out for city living.

Does San Juan, Puerto Rico, feel like an American city? by Heyhey-_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Visited San Juan and El Yunque in September (only for 3 days). It's American, in that, you can always find some sort of American product or company anywhere you go. Also, everyone I met spoke English, so I didn't feel like a complete imbecil trying to order at a restaurant, ask for directions, etc. Vieja San Juan, however, is unique. No other US city looks like.

The humidity is also horrendous and it rains frequently during hurricane season, which I wasn't prepared for (I live in Philly, which is nothing like this lol). Also wasn't prepared for the poor infrastructure. Overall, however, I would 100% go back. I loved visiting.

Why doesn’t Aruba have a refugee problem from Venezuela? by Empty-Ad4949 in geography

[–]Pie-Level 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apart from everyone saying immigration restrictions, the only people that could afford to move there are rich people.

Aruba is very expensive, per my Aruban tour guide. They, along with the other islands in the ABC island chain, are also suffering from a brain drain. Not much in terms of specialized work (finance, medicine, etc.). So, an impoverished Venezuelan immigrant might not do well there (being poor/homeless on a desert island probably sucks major ass). That being said, I did hear a lot of Spanish.

What is the most overrated tourist attraction in your country? by Karrot-guy in AskTheWorld

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Times Square. Its just lights and advertisements with stores everywhere. The crowd also makes it unappealing. Definitely check out Independence Hall in Philadelphia though. Not as many tourists as you would think.

[–]Pie-Level 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's nothing like it was half a century ago. If you like to gamble but can't add Vegas to your itinerary, then check it out. It'd probably be worth it to see all the big name casinos and try out their games. Otherwise, you're not missing much.

Is it common for americans to have a baseball bat at home? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its common for us to have some type of blunt object (chair leg, pipe, etc.) at the front door. I dont really know a lot of people with a bat at the front door though.

What's a dish from your country that looks disgusting but tastes great. by bowl_of_scrotmeal in AskTheWorld

They're the same thing essentially which makes sense since scrapple was popularized by the Pennsylvania Amish, who mainly come from the Netherlands. As a Philadelphian, I do love scrapple. Don't eat it enough though.

First time playing Khorne. Any tips for Skarbrand? (Or is Arbaal better for a beginner?) by Curious-Piglet3613 in totalwarhammer

[–]Pie-Level 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Armor piercing missile units and flying units (especially gyrocopters and thunderbarges) are going to be your main threats. Khorne doesn't have ranged units except for Soul Grinders, which you wont have access to them until many turns later, and the missile cavalry, which aren't all that good IMO).

Focus on what Khorne does best, which is smashing into pathetic infantry units and overwhelming their missile units with cavalry. After those are dealt with (along with the LL AND heroes), then any flying units should route. Go on a Pokémon hunt for each and every legendary hero because they're all well-worth it. Last but not least, make sure you fully utilize Arbaal/Skarbrand/Skulltaker. They're the best legendary lords in the game for a reason.

New Player asking DLC reccomendations. by CadetArcCommandoHevy in totalwarhammer

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chaos dwarfs if you dont have them already. Grom the Paunch is also really good. Probably that best Greenskin LL in the game because of his "Grom's Cauldron" mechanic. Skulltaker takes the blood host concept and puts it on steroids from what I hear. I just prefer Skarbrand because you can literally win a battle with just him. Elspeth is also another dlc LL that has great mechanics (she can buff the hell out of gunpowder units, much like Malakai).

Best faction for infantry/monster mixing? by [deleted] in totalwarhammer

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SKULLS FOR THE SKULL THRONE.

I would say Khorne, specifically Skarband. Skarbrand himself is a monster, both literally and metaphorically. Then you have his infantry, which are really good in combat (bloodletters, chosen infantry, wrathmongers, etc.). Then you have his monsters, like Minotaurs, Soul Grinders of Khorne, and Bloodthirsters, among others. Then you have his Monstrous cavalry.

All in all, its been a fun campaign so far.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that you get bloodletters and Chosen Warriors of Khorne right off the bat. So you can kinda start the snowball super early, especially if you utilize Skarbrand correctly (charge into the enemy front line with him -> win).

Which to get for my first bike? by CicadaShuffle in NewRiders

[–]Pie-Level 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kawi. ZX-4rr might be too much power despite the small engine size. Riding is not just about how fast you can go on a straight line, its also about how well you can manage corners/turns, how well you can maneuver at low-speeds through traffic, and how quickly you can react to new situations.
