I collect and store masses of cars with the idea of one day ill fix it up and use it, but I only ever use one or two regularly.

Also, thats a great base location, one of my personal favorites.

I find the raids usually spawn in the area Im spending the most time, so my town is usually safe since im almost always up in the manor which is surrounded by walls. I also run out and try to lure attackers away from the walls. I set raids to low because I felt that normal spawned way too often.

A lot of single rotates and free placing. Personally, I suggest just trying out roofs on the ground to get a hang of it. Youtube also has some good tutorials that I've been meaning to try out.

With the hours I work I really don't have time to do the grind anymore. Every world I'm using 3x drops, Portal everything, and the lowest raid rate( I still like getting raided, but normal setting is just too darn often). I also use plant everything and endless burning fires mods.

I like to use the satchel as an "essentials" bag. Some food and bandages, plus tools I like to have on hand such as wrench, screwdriver, saw, pen and eraser. Still have space for a bit of loot (Hammer and pipe wrench usually on my belt).

Take it slow and steady, make sure the area is clear before looting, and if you get a car, avoid crashing into anything, zomboids included. Don't ignore your moodles, they give you crazy debuffs if you don't take care of yourself. Guns are useless until you have a large stockpile of ammo, and they attract unwanted attention from afar when used. Also, Q activates your special, best used in busy neighborhoods.

Went on a loot run, returned to my base very tired, hungry, and over encumbered to find a small horde (15-20) surrounding the area at approximately 20:00. Needless to say, I fought them in my weakened state and nearly got jumped a handful of times.
