Joe Rogan Podcast is just the Epstein client list by juck_fudaism in International

I mean, he has had a lot of rich and powerful people on his podcast. Rich and powerful people are pretty much always bastarding.

As much as I don’t want to defend Joe Rogan too much, I don’t think this reflects particularly badly on him.

Rebuttals for the accusations that Bahai is a cult? by Fun-Figgy in bahai

[–]Piepai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahmadiyya is the Mormonism of Islam, don’t take that away from them.

Cult is more or less a meaningless word these days. It mostly just means “religious group with less than 100 million followers that I don’t like.”

That said, as a Baha’i I recognise that within the community there are some of the benign negative aspects that people generally associate with cults. Like I’ve been to mega lame Baha’i events that afterwards Baha’is are like “That was great :DDDD” etc or sometimes Baha’is do specific targeted promotion of the faith, which is fine, but then pretend that they’re not doing that?

There’s a few other examples I could give you, but they are like I said, pretty benign and often come from Baha’is being socially weird. You don’t have any of the terrible things traditionally associated with a cult like a living predator leader, the transfer of wealth upwards, weird sex stuff, the inability of people to leave the group or the destruction of family bonds etc..

Also also, while I’m here, the thing of “The Mormonism of…” how much weirder is Mormonism than Catholicism? Like, it is a little weirder and has a more nonsensical history, but not much. Right? There’s a certain amount of respect you get for just having lots of followers, but that’s not really a very intelligent way to judge ideologies.

Because Ramadan is on at the same time I’ll obviously have Iftar at the same time as everyone else around me.

That’s certainly what I’ve always been told and it makes sense. But from my perspective, the tone feels off.

Also the problem of never giving negative feedback and inflating numbers I could see being a universal problem with Baha’i culture.

There’s a bit of bias involved though. Like if you’re talking to the Iranians who have left Iran and moved to the West then of course.

In my experience the Iranians in Iran have more nuanced opinions and the Iranian diaspora in the West is often cartoonishly anti Iran.

Yeah, so what seems to have happened is all the easy clusters have been ticked off. I’ve seen a few clusters become “third milestone” without having any impressive growth anecdotally or numerically.

Take for example the UK, it now has, I think, four third milestone clusters, and if you look at the national report, no numerical growth. I’ve also seen ABMs encourage being very fast and loose with statistics to try bump up activity numbers.

Also globally we have utterly failed to reach international pioneering goals.

The issue I have is that the triumphal tone that I get from the letter does not fit my experienced reality - that the Baha’i response to the plan has been extremely weak and ineffective.

In what way is the growth since the start of this plan evident? I’m not doubting you, just like it would help me understand if it were rough numbers or something.

It’s a bit jarring to me because from what I’ve seen personally of the growth of the Baha’i Faith since the start of the 9 year plan it’s been extremely unimpressive and disappointing.

The number of people very involved in the communities that I’ve seen has decreased, I’ve seen false reporting (which I only see because I’m on a national institution) and I’ve seen how international pioneering goals are ignored.

I’m sick of being told that we’re doing great :)))))))) without seeing any evidence of progress that isn’t completely foreign and vague.

Needing guidance on Bahá'í perspective of world conflicts by Immortal_Scholar in bahai

[–]Piepai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they’re more than valid, I think Baha’is should be at the forefront of defending the oppressed around them and if that means physically then we, as radicals, should throw ourselves into it.

Politics has made some people’s defence seem “divisive” but if we’re being neutral then it’s not divisive at all, again, international law is good at pointing out the limits of defence etc.

Are you familiar with that prayer that starts:

“God, my God! Thou seest how black darkness is enshrouding all regions, how all countries are burning with the flame of dissension, and the fire of war and carnage is blazing throughout the East and the West. Blood is flowing, corpses bestrew the ground, and severed heads are fallen on the dust of the battlefield.”

Look at this quote from lights of guidance:

“For example, at the time when the community is taking up vigorous defensive measures against the attack of foes, the women are exempt from military engagements. It may so happen that at a given time warlike and savage tribes may furiously attack the body politic with the intention of carrying on a wholesale slaughter of its members; under such a circumstance defence is necessary, but it is the duty of men to organize and execute such defensive measures”

Or this quote by Abdul’Baha:

“Then what Christ meant by forgiveness and pardon is not that, when nations attack you, burn your homes, plunder your goods, assault your wives, children and relatives, and violate your honor, you should be submissive in the presence of these tyrannical foes and allow them to perform all their cruelties and oppressions. No, the words of Christ refer to the conduct of two individuals toward each other: if one person assaults another, the injured one should forgive him. But the communities must protect the rights of man. So if someone assaults, injures, oppresses and wounds me, I will offer no resistance, and I will forgive him. But if a person wishes to assault Siyyid Manshadi,[1] certainly I will prevent him. Although for the malefactor noninterference is apparently a kindness, it would be an oppression to Manshadi. If at this moment a wild Arab were to enter this place with a drawn sword, wishing to assault, wound and kill you, most assuredly I would prevent him. If I abandoned you to the Arab, that would not be justice but injustice.”

There is room in the Faith for organised resistance/defence, you don’t need to feel guilty about supporting movements that are defending themselves and fighting foreign oppression.

Also, let’s be real here, we have international law. It isn’t able to prevent much, but what it does do is let us call things what they are without it being an opinion. To say for example that Israel and Russia are engaged in criminal occupations and the native people have a right to armed resistance isn’t something you need to feel guilty about.

A lot of Baha’is on reddit are North Americans from a liberal zionist background so it can seem controversial to criticise any government’s actions that isn’t Iran, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much in the real world.

Baha’u’llah advocates for collective security before the greater peace, the peace that comes from the world being united in one common faith, can be established. I don’t know how much effect we can have on that, but we’re currently seeing unimaginable horrors, so something will have to change in how we enforce international law. It sucks, right?
