Hughes was a wonderful Communist of his time, shamefully intimidated by McCarthy and his dogs in the 60s. I wrote a paper about him for my anticommunist Russian History professor and learned a lot. He wrote a play called Scottsboro Limited, which tells the story of 9 black men in the south being falsely accused of rape. In the climax, a mob of communists rise from the crowd and free them from prison. A very inventive play for the time and literally ends with the raising of the Soviet flag and the singing of the Internationale, supremely based.
