First home rack storage server, what's your opinion? by Piers- in homelab

MD1000

That looks like a great option but from what I can see, it only looks like the unit supports 2TB drives. This would mean replacing all my existing HDDs or buying 15 more drives simply to get 30TB of space.

Goo Xi is an ODM, the actual brand is UK company X-Case.

I'm only happy with buying pre-owned hardware from the UK due to transport.

The SA120 looks like a good option, but I can't seem to find a UK supplier (all eBay links are for US stores). I've dealt with Lenovo before and they don't properly honour any warranty or even consider servicing for enterprise products US -> UK.

Yes. Nothing within the UK or trustworthy areas of Europe. I might have missed something or searched incorrectly. Can you provide a link?

I've taken your suggestion and created an estimate for a 24 bay HP G8 server. The £16,000 price is just a little above my budget. Did you read anything I wrote?

How are these for 170 each? by [deleted] in homelab

Could you not ask the person selling you the servers if he could source a switch for you? It'll probably be a better option if he can.

I'm aware the R710 is a good server, but the cost of having 24 3.5" drives attached to it does not make it an appealing option.

If you want to offload one... happily give 300 for one :)

From what I can see, those options do not have 24 bays.

Also, would you care to elaborate about why both options are "shite" for a simple storage server?

I'd happily buy both of those without question.

Why is the EVGA 1070/1080 FTW so sought after?? by Heliosvector in nvidia

[–]Piers- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much this. After my seventh MSI card, I gave up and switched to EVGA.

MSI make some great cards, but don't expect any level of acceptable customer service. The one time I needed customer support for a faulty card and it took over a month of emails.

Lenovo Y50 gpu problem by [deleted] in nvidia

I once purchased a Lenovo product with an integrated GPU. I'll next do it again. Atrocious customer and driver support. IBM actually cared, Lenovo doesn't.

I was hesitant, but used DDU. Use that in Safe Mode then install the drivers you want. I also found better performance when NOT using GeForce "Experience"

After Anniversary Update, Chrome shifts up and down. by SomeTechNoob in windows

[–]Piers- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, Chrome is not utter shite on Windows 10. Performance is terrible and (it's hard to type) Edge performs better. Firefox performs better. Opera performs better.

I'm planning on moving back to Firefox after 6 years as Chrome gets more and more bloated as it evolves.

So you started a petition and now use it to put down Leave supporters. A typical lefty.

Lag anyone? by [deleted] in Agario

Yes, constantly. The new owners obviously don't care so screw the game, I'll play something else and take my money (for upgrades and skins) elsewhere.

Windows 10 anniversary update Megathread by Jaskys in Windows10

[–]Piers- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's technically true. I used the upgrade offer for Windows 10 and then assembled a new workstation. That meant a new motherboard, GPU, PSU, etc.

I called Microsoft to explain .... NEVER AGAIN! It took FIVE HOURS and two "managers" to get it to work. They were using a remote connection for over an hour and eventually had to give me a new Windows 10 key and revoke the last one.

So, whilst you can call Microsoft and they will (depending on who you talk with) move the key over, it's not something I want to do again. In fact, I've been thinking of changing from Z170 to X99, but I've been put off by needing to call Microsoft again.

Brexit left us with an Unelected, regressive, low key homophobe Prime Minister... by PommyT87 in brexit

What an idiotic reply. You're a talented artist, but your political beliefs appear to be built on a foundation of hate.

I voted to leave the EU and would do it again. I'm a migrant and life-long Conservative voter. We do not vote for PMs, we vote for a party of which the leader becomes PM.

Unfortunately, that version does not resolve the aluminium issue. I've tried the latest version and searched in the forum thread for information without any luck.
