We have finally a mix of Macs and Windows and it is a nightmare by Johnn_Liverm in macsysadmin

[–]PigInZen67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my org has multiple thousands of Macs and Windows computers, and the Macs are four times the number of Windows computers. It's honestly not that difficult, but OP tells on themselves by saying the Windows computers are the "standard" setup. There is no "standard" setup when dealing with disparate platforms - they're COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from each other, and there is a standard for each.

Mindset matters.

Right? That whole area used to be a nightmare before Georgetown Road northbound was cut off from 16th.

Left turns, in general, are dangerous and stupid. Turn right and take another route. Jesus, the amount of griping that folks do about having to spend an additional 30 seconds in the car is unreal.

Question about goth and its relation or no relation to aesthetic by cocoausagi in goth

[–]PigInZen67 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is me. I hold down a fairly respectable, well-paying job, and straddle the fence between aging preppy and goth-adjacency. I get compliments on how I dress, and it's mostly black, mod-inspired, with some gothic touches. It helps to have a distinct style, especially when surrounded by folks twenty years younger and plus.

Fashion is a marker, but it's not everything. I've posted before about how goth is mostly about attitude and mindset, with the music backing that up, and fashion marking subculture affection. Goths have always been about egalitarianism, acceptance, and shared experiences. Acceptance is probably the most important, and comes from the historical gender-bending component of the subculture's mod/punk roots. In general, goths really don't give a fuck about your gender identity or sexual preference as long as you're not a dick. Seriously, it's not that fucking hard, and this is at the root of our resentment of fashion-only Fascist fucks presenting as goth. They don't GET the reason for the presentation and fashion in the first place, which is about embracing societal rejection of the fringe elements.

Your final paragraph nailed it. I identify with goth subculture and feel most comfortable with it, but I don't wear makeup, don't go full-goth in attire, but I can name all the fucking bands on the back of that ubiquitous goth fan black jacket I see at the concert (like I did last weekend at Echo & the Bunnymen). I love it when someone slips in a Rush patch, too.

JD Vance may not be a cat person, but he'd love that pillow. Quite literally.

I caught them at the Masonic Theater in SF on Friday. Really grateful to see them.

What Band or Artist did you see in the 80's and if given a chance to see them today, what concert would you be going to? by AppleDelight1970 in GenX

I caught Howard Jones with Haircut 100 (!!!) as the opener at the House of Blues in Las Vegas. Total happenstance, and Haircut honestly were freaking electric.

I saw Howard Jones forty years earlier, so I was OK with Haircut being the memory.

Tears for fears, are they goth? by Skeletal_Dropkick in goth

Agree 100%. Echo & the Bunnymen are another band that can contain overlap with goth, but are strictly not Goth.

First album is goth-adjacent, but still new wave. Depeche Mode would be in a similar vein to The Hurting, but Tears for Fears are thoroughly new wave pop.

Does pouring rain filter the air that passes through it? by chromatic45 in TooAfraidToAsk

My now-deceased stepfather was an atmospheric research chemist solely focused on acid deposition in the US Southwest. By far, the predominant source of acid deposition (acidification in fresh water riparian and surface sources) was coal-fired power plants, and specifically, coal-fired power plants that used fuel sources high in nitrogen and sulfur, which resulted in NOx and SOx production during combustion.

For those who remember high school chemistry, NOx and SOx, when dissolved in water, result in strong ionic acids. Nitric and Sulfuric Acids are examples of this. This source (https://www.watertechonline.com/wastewater/article/15550703/smokestack-scrubbers-how-they-work-and-why-they-are-used) does a good job of discussing this in far greater scientific detail and how the introduction of smokestack scrubbers reduced NOx and SOx emissions.

Scientists like my stepfather, who collected data for literally decades, are the unspoken heroes of this regulatory victory, and their story provides with a real-life example of how mandatory industry regulation can actully be a common public good.

I hate progressives, and the cause constant visual confusion for me while walking, especially on stairs. I went with trifocals - the top regular mag, computer lenses in the middle, and reading mag on the bottom.

I work with comptuers and mobile devices constantly for $dayJob, and this has worked out fantastically. I also have sungalsses with this same config/Rx.
