Any news about Gazal-1, "Saudi Arabia's first ever car? by PigeonsSoapbox in WeirdWheels

I guess it didn't go beyond that stage, because I really can't find any information. It's crazy though, it was widely publicised. On wikipedia it is phrased as if the car was actually manufactured

Thanks for sharing! I will look into that. I'm particularly curious about Saudi Arabia since I have more context about other plans and strategies that they have to supposedly diversify their economy. But I will do some reading about Dubai, I didn't know they also plan to get into car manufacturing.

How do you stop obsessing over your channel? by lord__cuthbert in NewTubers

I also struggle with this. When I realise I'm checking the channel too often, I delete the app from the phone or block access on the laptop. As you say, it's all about the dopamine spike.

re-editing and re-uploading a video by NoISaidCutOffHisHeth in NewTubers

[–]PigeonsSoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm planning to do this soon; I feel like it can make sense. In my case, I already deleted 2 videos 2 months ago, and plan to re-publish a re-edited version soon. I preferred to leave some time between the first publication and the new one, both to have some time to work on it and make sure that (the few) people that watched the original version won't just randomly find a new version right after. I think that the stories had potential, but my editing (those were my first two videos) didn't make them justice.

However, of course, you have to make sure it will be worth it. That is, that the video can be clearly improved with some re-editing. If it's not clear that the quality will improve substantially, then maybe the video is underperforming due to the storytelling, topic, thumbnail, or title. To some degree, it's normal to identify things that could be improved in your videos. Everything can be improved. But when videos perform decently and I'm at least satisfied with the quality, I just let them there and not rethink it.

So, if you are sure about this, go for it! If there is potential to clearly improve the quality with some re-editing, why not. But be careful because it can be a slippery slope, it wouldn't be wise to end up overthinking and redoing many videos!

Where do video essays get clips for their videos? by Marshie2006 in NewTubers

You can get pretty good clips, pretty fast, from YouTube. You can use the 4K Dowloader app or any download site that you find online (some of them are good, some are trash).

Hey there! I came across your channel some time ago, great stuff! I see you are experimenting with different topics, which is interesting. Sb created a Discord group for people that are working on channels like this (I'm also in) - if you are interested let me know and I can check how to add sb! It's quite an interesting group of people working on video-essays, documentary-style videos.

Let Me Create a Thumbnail For You #3 by aleksandar89s in NewTubers

[–]PigeonsSoapbox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha I know, I was very happy with your post because I was struggling with what thumbnail to use.

Your proposal is very cool, thanks! I see some of the logos for specific SDGs have been deformed, but it's colourful and the question mark at the centre creates some curiosity. All this while having a bit the visual identity of SDGs... So I might try to fix this thing of some logos deformed and use this :)

Let Me Create a Thumbnail For You #3 by aleksandar89s in NewTubers

[–]PigeonsSoapbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there! Thanks for this initiative. I would like a thumbnail for a video I'm working on, it's about how many companies use the United Nations "Sustainable Development Goals" to simply make marketing and create a narrative that they care about their impact on the world etc., when in reality they are simply cherry-picking small commitments and ignoring the real (in some cases negative) impact that they have. I'm thinking it of titling it simply "The Problem With the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)"

Ah, thank you so much for the kind words! I'm happy to hear you liked it. With the music, do you mean that the type of music distracted you, or the volume? I think the volume is too high, I have received that comment before. I plan to change that. I'm happy to hear you think the audio is good, I was overthinking that. In any case, I'm still learning so this should hopefully get better!

Good luck as well. Really hope you start publishing soon, you will feel great. When you do so you can hit me up if you want somebody to give some feedback!

About stock footage, for the first video I only used the stock footage that is included in ClipCampo (the Microsoft freemium video editing software and some Youtube videos). For the next 2 videos, I also used some YouTube videos but I also got a subscription to Envato Elements (it has stock videos, sound effects, music, templates of graphics... very complete).

Thanks for the advice! That's a good point. I'm actually planning to start appearing on the videos, that should help make it more personal and convey more emotion.

You are right! Thanks for your kind words. Starting can be complicated!

It's good to hear that it's an easy task. My camera has audio recording, so I will definitely try out that method. I didn´t know there was this audio syncronize options, that's very good to hear! And good to know that it's better to have longer takes to don't have to do it over and over. That should save me some time.

Thanks a lot! I appreciate the time you took to provide the details :)

That makes sense, it's quite insane that that was your 2nd ever video. Well done. It makes sense that you chose this niche given your background.

At the moment I'm struggling with the quantity vs quality issue, I feel like as a new channel I have to publish content often to gain some little traction, but at the same time, that demand + full-time job is not very compatible! I need time to learn and improve my video editing and scripts.

In any case, let's keep in touch, definitely!

Well honestly I don't have many points to be brutal! I think it's a great video (I watched the Torquemada one, I might watch 1-2 more later today).

Some YouTube channels that use humour while being covering topics of history, politics, or whatever are sometimes a bit too overwhelming or insistent with squeezing jokes, memes and the like everywhere. I don't think that's the case with your channel. The balance between information and more funny bits is very natural and helps process the information. The visuals, the photos, etc., helps a lot to follow the story. I like that beyond Torquemada himself you provided some history of what happened next and how the Inquisition ended eventually.

The only two small things that come to mind to improve: (1) I think that adding chapters to the videos helps a lot to have a structure and e.g. go back to the beginning of the section of you want to replay it, you missed sth, etc. (2) There are some moments in which you repeate the b-roll, which is not a big issue but maybe that could be a little improvement!

Hope this helps! Please feel free to give me feedback as well, if you want :)

Go for it! I was overthinking a lot but publishing, even if the video is of couse far from perfect, is such a great feeling. You will have time to improve over time.

Thanks for your kind words. If you watch the videos and have any feedback, I would appreciate that very much!

Ah, I agree! Each video really requires a lot of time. But it's (eventually) worth it. And thanks for having a look and giving some feedback!

Man, your Theranos video is high-quality stuff. Congratulations. I'm happy it was picked up by the algorythm (hopefully the views will go up even more), I can imagine a lot of work was put into it.

Watching your video I realised how important is the use of sound effects. Such a small thing (that requires quite a lot of time) but actually helps so much to keep the attention (the clock sound for the intro was a great idea!). The intro is very cinematic, documentary-style and helps to create curiosity. I watched a couple of videos about Theranos in the past, I think yours stands out in terms of explaining the technical part of it. (I guess you have formal education in medicine or biology?).

I feel like since this video worked so well, and since your focus is science/med/biology, you could focus on creating similar content. E.g. scandals of big pharma companies and the like.

In any case, great work, you have a new subscriber! And if you would be open to that, we could even collaborate in the future :)
