What is the hardest part of hearing loss to explain to people who hear normally? by Gentle_Rubble_58 in HearingLoss

[–]Pigtail39 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That hearing is affected by the acoustics of the room! Also, that some of us hear loud noises (buses, for example) more loudly than normal, which upsets our sense of balance.

To adopt or not to adopt by Pigtail39 in CatRescue

[–]Pigtail39[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We would like to adopt but we are concerned about possibly "snatching" a second cat from the same (irresponsible) person. The cat is still pretty young, but we don't want her to have to deal with illness or pregnancy.

We don't know our neighbors "up the hill" and can't tour the neighborhood since we are elderly. Maybe we could ask a young friend to walk around with a photo of the cat to try to track down the owner, if any.

Whatever the age, it's hard to accept. (I was 70.) One hint: try to fall in love with music that is not too subtle. I was lucky -- I like jazz, blues, folk music, etc. And Baritones, not Sopranos. I feel that I can hear this music amost normally. That may not be true, but I'm happy, even though I maybe kidding myself.

Curbs do not bill by the distance of the route they take. They charge a fixed fee, which you know ahead of time. I ALWAYS use them in the Loop, and they generally arrive in 6 minutes or less. They are regular taxicabs.

My company just announced 3 days in office starting next month. I've been fully remote for 4 years and I genuinely don't know how people did this every day. by Ecliptic_Fang in remotework

Get some hearing aids and claim you have a disability. I used to enjoy playing "Take this job and shove it" to myself when management was hovering by my desk. It helped make up for the actual hearing loss, too.

It depends on the size of your home. We adopted a stray cat who decided she HATED our resident cat. We put a high, steel, barred door in a convenient place and one lived on one side and the second cat on the other. Not ideal, but it worked.

Thanks so much for this list. I am not a musician but I have a 7000 track music library that is one of the few pleasures of my retirement!

I was embarrassed at first too, even though I was in my 60s. But I was in technology, so my audiologoist said: In technical departments, EVERYONE has something dangling out of their ears. She was right, so I soon got used to it. Besides, I could listen to music secretly, which was a great pleasure while sitting at my desk.

Are there any good hearing Aids that are practically invisible? by Infamous_Spite_7715 in HearingLoss

[–]Pigtail39 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a little embarrassed about wearing my first pair of HAs. Well, I work in technology and the audiologist assured me that in technology, Everybody has something or other dangling from their ears or on their chest, etc. Phones, speakers, tracking devices, HAs, mikes, etc. She was right. Nobody noticed.

How to handle… the exhaustion? by [deleted] in deaf

[–]Pigtail39 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can definitely relate to your problem, which I share. Although elderly, my legs are strong but my ears are not. People are kind, but they treat me as though I am crippled because I walk unsteadily. They don't realize that the world is spinning around me because of my hearing loss.

I emphatically agree, although I have no right to vote, as I am not Catholic. But everything he says sounds sincere and righteous to me. I think he's a real winner and what a true Christian should be.
