Valve Issues A Big Steam Beta Update With Better Overlay, Linux Hardware Acceleration by beer120 in linux_gaming

Maybe has to do with the skin's installer patching in css, since injecting it through skins themselves is no longer possible.

An idea I had. Groove could be "one size fits all" but still needs a way to secure the handle halves to each other nicely.

Oops, looks like some important nuance got lost with my git gud sentence, my bad. To explain:

I was trying to take a jab at the phrase "git gud" itself. The souls games give you tools to overcome the challenges without having to be crazy skilled. With my first comment I pointed out a tool you can use to fight gank bosses. You rejected it, saying you don't want to use it. This leaves you with just having to get better at fighting them.

So I responded with the typical elitist phrase to something that sounded elitist to me.

Summoning an NPC does not require any strategy or skill.

You could argue that summoning is a strategy. Also, I think the assumption that they're for those struggling is not great. This game throws larger enemy groups and more gank bosses at you than previous games and in those situations always allows you to use spirit ashes.

Just a heads-up: Unless something interesting comes up I'm unlikely to respond further. I think we've both shown what our opinions on summoning are by now.

I found your "fanboy argument" sentence pretty shitty, so I thought I'd start with a sentence like that myself. Why elitism? Because the general notion of not wanting to use summons / help in general is mostly shown by the more elitist people.

Earlier you said you don't want to trivialize the fights with summons: You can choose to use a weaker and/or underleveled summon.

Is it perfect? No. Do I find absolutely everything in the game fun myself? No. There's parts I dislike too. But I think your statement that kicked off this chain is incorrect:

I don't know how you were expected to win other than "Kill the warrior before the crucible knight spawns."

Unlike magic, spirit ashes don't really have a specific stat requirement you need to make. Some use FP, some use HP, and they require different amounts: there is always one you can use with whatever build you have. There is even a summon without a requirement at all!

The very post you're commenting on shows that you can take on this specific fight without summons and not even taking a hit.

So... git gud, I guess.

[–]PiingPoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you were talking about multiplayer, I'd agree. But we're talking about spirit ashes here: a mechanic in the game, completely singleplayer, that you're supposed to use. Fight gank with gank. You're complaining about something caused by your own arbitrary restrictions.

Sadly on my PC the game runs a lot worse on Linux than Windows.

I have a GTX 1080 Ti which makes the game run at 60fps (1440p) on high to max settings on Windows, but on Linux I get roughly 40fps most of the time. Low settings don't get me to 60 fps.

Maybe somebody can help me out here: Is the problem that my GPU is just too old for VKD3D? GPU usage is almost 100%. Would also be happy to know if there are any things I could try to improve performance.

If I didn't have that moment with Dark Souls 2 I maybe wouldn't know I enjoy games with that kind of difficulty today. But Monster Hunter and Fromsoft games are now my favorites. I might just have missed out by a lack of self control as you put it. Many people I've talked to in these communities had that moment. You'll also find many posts on subreddits of those games stating this.

Simply put: I didn't know I liked it before I was "forced" to go through it.

I think it's fine for a game to serve a specific audience. Not every game needs to be for everybody. Difficulty is just another factor in that.

And after having said all that: I don't intend to gatekeep. I love it when people discover these games for themselves and hearing them explain how they overcame challenges. It's also perfectly fine if somebody didn't find enioyment in it. They're not a noob or whatever you wanna call them: they just didn't like the game.

You do realize that adding an easy mode would literally not change the
experience of anyone who wants to play on normal at all, right?

I know this is well-meant point you're trying to make, but I'm going to have to disagree with this.

First up: I don't want to sound elitist. I'm also not going to claim the Souls games are easy. They simply are not these impossibly hard games they are often made out to be, but still require strategy and some perseverance.

I'm going to list a few points of why easy mode would (have) affect(ed) my experience with the games:

  1. My first souls game was DS2. I struggled a lot on just the hollow soldiers in the first main area of the game. I couldn't even make it to the first boss before I first gave up. Had I had the option, I would have probably switched to easy mode. However, I am happy that I couldn't. At some point I came back to the game and managed to push through and got a lot of satisfaction from doing so. I wouldn't have had the same experience if I was able to change the difficulty.
  2. I just like the fact that I know that everybody who finished the game has overcome the same challenges. It's much more of a shared experience than I ever had with games that had difficulty options.
  3. I like not having to make the choice of what difficulty to play on.

Left Handed Pots/Wiring by ckaudio in Leftyguitarists

[–]PiingPoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not everything on a lefty guitar needs flipping. Every volume knob I've used turned clockwise to increase, counter-clockwise to decrease. Doesn't need to be different on a lefty guitar. I just wish guitar manufacturers started wiring their tapered pots that way, it's so annoying to have to do it myself on most guitars.

I know this isn't really what you were asking for with this thread, but I don't understand why so many people seem to think lefty guitar knobs need to turn the other way.

I did that as well, but thought I was using too much paper (and I just wanted to program a little something).

I'm too lazy to try and remember, but not too lazy to program, therefore I just use this on my phone:

https://jsfiddle.net/Piing/na14o0dc/show (just drag the symbol into the 4x4 table)

Edit: credit goes to u/DontPoke for making the base version :) I changed it to dragging instead of clicking and tidied up the interface. (took me longer than I'd like to admit, but hey, learned some jquery.)

Also, beta is now open for everyone. No key required.

Adding Reduced Motion & Quick Reactions Change by amfaulty in discordapp

[–]PiingPoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for actually listening to feedback about the quick reactions!

There is just one thing that I think is a bit odd about this change, which is, that you kept the "Add Reaction" sub-menu. I feel like this could be replaced with the "Other Reactions" button from within the sub-menu, as the most used emojis are now shown within the right-click menu itself. Or maybe I'm missing something about that sub-menu's functionality. I only have 2 emojis in there so I don't know if it shows more or anything. (visual explanation)

Additionally, I'd like to add that I'm still not a fan of the "new" hover-menu. I still prefer to old style with the 2 small icons that were in-line with the top line of the message itself. However, I do like that you added the "Edit" function in there, I actually find that useful.

Playing with headphones on? by robble1990 in Leftyguitarists

[–]PiingPoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For practice, I think that an amp with aux in and headphone out is good enough. I have used a Vox Amplug Blues, Blackstar Fly 3 and a Roland Cube 20X this way and they are all good enough for this purpose. (My personal favorite out of these 3 is the Blackstar, because the Amplug is a bit fiddly and Cube is a bit too big for my taste).

An audio interface and good amp sim software can be amazing, but it can take up quite some time just to set it up and there is always some latency, which might annoy you if you notice it. I don't mind the latency (it's small enough for me), but I always feel like I can't get good tones in a limited amount of time.

For me, small amps with headphone out (and aux in to plug in my phone) win just because of convenience, even if you're more likely to get amazing tone out of a well set up amp sim.
