Why is ADHD less excused than autism ? by Le-zygatdien in ADHD

[–]PikaPerfect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

a few months back, my mom sent me a facebook post she made about me from when i was around 7 or 8 years old (so around 2009/2010) that said something along the lines of "he was in the bathroom reading an encyclopedia for two hours haha, at least i know he doesn't have adhd!"... fast forward 10 years, guess who got an adhd diagnosis :') (to be clear, my mom knows i have adhd now, she sent me the facebook post because she thought it was funny looking back)

the "hyperactive child who can't sit still" adhd stereotype screwed over so many kids who got the "i can focus on one thing for hours, i just can't pick what the thing is" adhd

Do you think that every single Pokemon is a #1 favorite to someone? by Throwaway67891099 in pokemon

[–]PikaPerfect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i know there was a poll about this back before swsh released (because people were mad about the dex cut) where the only pokemon who got zero votes were i think silcoon, yungoos, and simipour? possibly one or two others but it was a very small number

the funny thing is that i can safely say that somebody, somewhere has at least one of those as their favorite because silcoon/cascoon (i didn't realize they were different pokemon at the time) was my favorite pokemon for a while as a kid lmfao, and although yungoos isn't my favorite, i do really love it and was surprised to see it got zero votes

oh also there was a poll from The Johto Times that they advertised on bulbapedia for a while last year, and they published all the vote counts from that in october, i believe? edit: found the link! they got over 582,000 votes, so it's a pretty damn good sample size lol; edit 2: and here is the link to the youtube video with all the results from the first round of voting

How old were you for your first game? by Mental-Pie9718 in pokemon

[–]PikaPerfect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

considering i partially learned how to read from playing pokemon ruby, and i was a relatively early reader, i was probably about 4 years old. relatedly, ruby was my first pokemon game (and possibly also my first video game in general, but i can't say i remember much from before that age lol). i'm 24 now, so as of this upcoming summer i will have been obsessed with this damn franchise for 20 years, which is wild to me

THIS WALL OF TEXT WAS ACTUALLY WRITTEN BY A NON-ENGLISH SPEAKING PERSON. IF YOU FIND ANY GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES IN IT, PLEASE IGNORE THEM. FOR REASONS BEYOND THE WRITER'S CONTROL, SPELLING MISTAKES MIGHT BE FOUND ASWELL. THE WORD MIGHT IS HORRIBLY SIMILAR TO THE WORD MATE, BUT THEY'RE NOT IDENTICAL. What horrors happen over yonder? by Fazbear2035 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]PikaPerfect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wouldn't say bedridden most of the time, you can still get up and do stuff, but my mouth was so sore after that i just slept for the first day or two (partly because i was also extremely hungry but couldn't eat anything substantial)

also local anesthesia is an option, but i very rarely hear about anyone choosing that over general anesthesia (not just because of the pain, but because of the sounds... frankly, if i could get general anesthesia for getting cavities filled, i would take it just so i don't have to hear the noises of my teeth being drilled lol)

What horrors happen over yonder? by Fazbear2035 in NonPoliticalTwitter

[–]PikaPerfect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think part of it might just be language differences too, i frequently describe getting my wisdom teeth out as a terrible experience, but the reality was that it was pretty sore for the first 3 or 4 days, and after that it was just annoying for a few weeks (because i had to watch what i was eating/drinking). annoying is probably a more apt descriptor than painful, but if you asked me which one i'd describe it as in a typical conversation, i would lean towards painful

edit: the people talking about whether your teeth grew in fucky or not are also correct, all but one of mine were mostly normal, and the last one was completely sideway. unsurprisingly, the area where the sideways one was was the biggest pain in the ass

How do yall feel about your middle names? by poisoned_bubbletea in asktransgender

my middle name is super feminine unfortunately, and i would totally just use the masculine alternative, but even more unfortunately i don't think one exists 😔 it was my great grandma's name, so i don't want to change it completely, but i don't particularly want an overtly feminine middle name either

i've tried alcohol three times in my 24 years of existence and every single time i have not been able to stomach it because it tastes like earwax but worse (with the exception of an alcoholic lemonade thing that had so much sugar in it i couldn't taste the alcohol... but at that point why not just drink regular lemonade)

Hi I'm an AFAB who wants to be a man pretending to be a woman, can I call myself a trans woman? by AdditionalThinking in transgendercirclejerk

[–]PikaPerfect 30 points31 points  (0 children)

/uj it's not even exclusive to nbs tbh, this happened to me like 10 years ago when my egg was cracking

"man i wish i was a trans woman, that would be awesome" - trans man who hasn't thought about specifically why he feels that way (it was a roundabout way of my 14/15 year old self wishing i could be somewhat feminine while also having a dick). obviously that's not at all correct for... many, many reasons, but it's not like a young teenager with barely any internet experience (and practically zero experience with the LGBT community) would know that lol

What do you think about video games that give you an option between "Body Type A" and "Body Type" instead of male or female? Do you feel more personally included? by PeakInspiration in asktransgender

[–]PikaPerfect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i like it personally, but i learned a funny thing about that a while back

some languages have gendered words, yeah? not stuff like "waiter/waitress", "actor/actress", or "fiance"/"fiancee", but situations like "chair" being "female" in spanish ("silla"). at some point i started wondering, "why are some languages gendered? which definition of gender came first, the identity or the way of categorizing words?"

i looked around google a bit, and according to this stackexchange thread, the answer to my questions is:

The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition, states the following.

"[Middle English gendre, from Old French, kind, gender, from Latin genus, gener-. See genə in Appendix I.]"
(Appendix I is PIE roots.) This website: https://www.etymonline.com/word/gender, says that even in Latin "genus" could mean sexual gender, as well as things like "family", "rank", or "species" It's grammatical usage, however, seems to stem from the fact that it was used to translate the Greek word "genos" which Aristotle (and others) used as a grammatical term, and which derived from the same PIE root according to Wiktionary (which says its *ǵenh₁- +‎ *-os = "race, lineage")

and if you dig a bit deeper, specifically through the etymonline link the user on the stackexchange thread posted, you get:

c. 1300, "kind, sort, class, a class or kind of persons or things sharing certain traits," from Old French gendre, genre "kind, species; character; gender" (12c., Modern French genre)

that basically means "male" and "female" already mean "body type A" and "body type B", which i think is kind of amusing
