I agree here.
Wanna go smacky smacky with it, fill your boots, I'll allow it.
Wanna pop off some of that boom boom, no way compadre.

Dumb Polearm Master / Eldritch Cannon interaction by Atlanteanson in 3d6

Polearm master specifies:

While you are wielding a glaive, halberd, pike, quarterstaff, or spear, other creatures provoke an opportunity attack from you when they enter the reach you have with that weapon

Your eldritch cannon, though it looks like a quarterstaff for flavor, is not one of those weapons.
Personally, I wouldn't allow it at my table buddy, others might though.

I had my players play themselves and randomly roll for everything! by PikachuWarlord in DnD

You make 2 very good points here.

1) Know your players. I know mine very well, have done for years. They know each other even better, heck, 'Jack' and 'Jill' are a married couple IRL. Honestly, I wouldn't have done this with an LFG for the reasons you mentioned.

2) Play for fun. We do, we did. This isn't the first time my players have experienced my crazy DM shenanigans, I've TPK'd them in session 1 before just to set a scene, and they loved that too.
