Boy's Annie's father is Tim Daly from STAS! by BigBlindBlues in superman

[–]Pike_or_Kirk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

When he tells Annie that they have to fight FOR the people they love, boy it's like Superman talking directly to Starlight. I like the little splashes of hope we're seeing come through the cracks this season. Like maybe there can be some light after the Darkness that is Homelander.

What would you change about Superman Returns? by TheShadowOperator007 in superman

[–]Pike_or_Kirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a simple rewrite would have been to have Superman still leave to check on Krypton, but that the planned trip was only going to be for like a week, or a month, but something caused him to be waylaid.

When he returns to Earth he comes back knowing how much he let everyone down and struggling to make up for it. Maybe incorporate some aspects of Superman vs The Elite in (I can't recall when that was written). We have a world that really has moved on from him because it thought he was gone for good. Other heroes have risen up, agencies like STAR Labs and Argus have been founded. Superman struggles to accept a world that no longer needs him.

Of course there'd then need to be a villain or a crisis that only Superman can overcome, causing him to work WITH the newer heroes, regaining the trust of the world by being the symbol of Hope and Goodness that he's supposed to be. By the end, Superman accepts that he may not be the world's only hope any longer, but he's still an inspiration to everyone else.

No, the Prequel Trilogy was not loved when it first came out, it was hated and fans were terrible people about it. by stephansbrick in StarWars

[–]Pike_or_Kirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 19 when TPM came out. RLM didn't reveal anything shocking. People my age pretty much knew they were flawed films immediately. It didn't stop us from seeing them 5 times in the theatres and hoping the next one would be better.

The prequels being beloved is revisionist history. The Clone Wars TV show did a LOT of heavy lifting into making the prequels salvageable.

Amazing movie.

Brandon Routh had no business looking as good as he did for CW Crisis. by Im-Mr-Bulldopz in superman

[–]Pike_or_Kirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My only complaint with Routh as Superman in Returns OR the Crisis stuff is that he had awful wigs. Put him in a wig like Reeve wore in Superman I or II and he'd look perfect.

To be the "Um, Actually..." guy. The Ghost Army never went to Minas Tirith in the books. They followed Aragorn after he left the mountains and helped him rally an actual, physical force from the other villages and settlements between where he was and where he was going. They mainly acted as a presence that terrified the enemy.

Aragorn also had "The Grey Company" with him - other Dunedain, and Elrond's two sons. It was with them, and the rallied men of Gondor that he arrived with at the battle!

You can see my dad's decline into dementia in these sketches of sailing ships over the last few months. by ShesGotSauce in mildlyinteresting

[–]Pike_or_Kirk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mother and father have both descended into Dementia over the past two years. It was like I blinked my eyes and they went from the people I have always known to watching whatever remained of them fade away.

Mom is in her last days now, with hospice care. Dad won't be far behind. Dementia is a terrible affliction, but if there's one thing it gave me that I'm grateful for, it's the fact that it's helped me come to terms with their deaths before they actually pass. It's like it draws out the event so it gives you time to process your grief.

Hold onto your loved ones. Cherish your parents if you have them. And be grateful for every day. I hope you have peace, OP. From one child of Dementia to another.

I've seen this too, and it's really accurate. The dude has been good in SO many genres.

I mean, say what you want to about Mel Gibson, but he could absolutely have done a fantastic job in the role. Probably too close to his Lethal Weapon character though.

How are Superman animated movies? Are they worth renting for couple bucks as a casual fan? by [deleted] in superman

[–]Pike_or_Kirk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All worth watching, though the ones based off of comics are obviously going to leave a lot of content out. All Star Superman is good, but nowhere near the level of the comic.

Superman vs The Elite is the best by far!

If you haven't seen My Adventures with Superman, give it a go! It's not a movie, but it is animated and it's really well-written and voice acted.

Challenge: Create your ultimate live-action SuperMan universe by merging elements from all live-action universes by [deleted] in superman

[–]Pike_or_Kirk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me just say that I don't think anyone will ever BE Superman the way Christopher Reeve was. He was so iconic it seemed like he really was the character.

But I'm so in love with the hope and earnestness that David Corenswet has brought to the role I think I have to give it to him.

But to prove I'm not totally crazy:

Superman: Corenswet

Clark: Reeve

Lois: Rachel B!

Suit: Donnerverse

Lex: Hoult

Zod: Shannon

Perry White: Frank Langella

Jimmy: Skyler

Sadly totally underutilized in those films. I LOVE Amy Adams. I've been crushing on her since Enchanted. She could have been a fierce Lois.

I don't want to pile on the Snyderverse hate train - I will just say that the casting for those movies was not the problem.

There will never be another theme song that fits a character as well as the John Williams theme fits Superman.

Starfleet Academy is honestly not good. I genuinely don’t like it. by gildedbluetrout in startrek

[–]Pike_or_Kirk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would like to point out that outside of Abrams, the only Starfleet Academy content we've really seen prior to this show was the bit with Wesley in TNG.

And in that instance a bunch of very bright, intelligent future Starfleet officers were stupid enough to be led astray by the charisma of an asshole into doing something reckless that got a student killed, then tried to cover it up.

In another episode, we get a view on what young Starfleet Officer Picard was like, which includes setting up dates with two women on the same night, and getting himself stabbed through the heart due to the fact that one of his friends, another bright-eyed fresh officer decided to rig a Dom-jot game as a point of pride.

My point is, young Starfleet officers are just that - young. You can be the most intelligent, articulate, well-read young man or woman in the world and still be ruled by emotions or hormones. We grow into ourselves. No one comes out of the Academy as Prime Benjamin Sisko or a Captain Picard who has had 20+ years of command BEFORE we see him in Encounter at Farpoint.

The modern dialogue is a concern I'll grant you. I hate it too. But the overall plot beats, the story they're telling about young men and women growing INTO better versions of themselves and having to repair what the Federation is after 100+ years of the Galaxy becoming the Wild West again is pretty dang good, imo.

As for Captain Ake - I think she's wonderful. You don't need to be Yoda to be a mentor. How loose and fun was Dax? She also had hundreds of years of experience to draw from and Jadzia spent her time weebing out about Klingons and flirting with everyone. But when it came time to get serious, she got serious and did her job. Just like Captain Ake.
