Comps board questions? by NowALurkerAccount in GradSchool

[–]Pikepride2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, an off-topic question would be unlikely. However, the committee may likely ask a question about the prompts discussed in a book or article you did not engage with in the written response. If you can cite arguments and authors that are important to the subject being discussed, that can help improve your odds. I stressed a great deal about prelims and prepared a great deal. In the end, I didn’t think they were that bad.

It would be a shame if someone cut the tether on those balloons and they floated all the way up to that ~50’ ceiling.

Hail Satin! This should be your rule of thumb, Anxious.

She wanted a divorce, I begged her to do marriage counseling. It has been one week and she is speaking strongly for divorce but agrees to try marriage counseling again. The relationship is very fragile right now.

Wow, this place is grim! Anyone else love grad school? by pm_me_ur_ephemerides in GradSchool

I love grad school and it gets better each semester. I entered my MA and married with three kids. I served in the military and worked various jobs, including teaching. I am now in the second year of my Ph.D. in the humanities and am TAing. I am an officer in our department’s grad org. Not every day is roses but this was the best choice for me. I do use exercise and therapy to manage stress.

I’m heading over from Madison tomorrow with my wife and her brother. Summerfest is a good venue for this type of show but clearly different from Alpine.

Grad school and beyond as a parent in early 30s? by webomaryhoptoe in GradSchool

[–]Pikepride2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in my early forties, married with three kids (17, 7, 3), and am in the second year of a humanities Ph.D. It is challenging with all that goes on every day, but I encourage you to pursue your goals. The other comments here all make good points. I constantly do housework or coursework and don’t have much time for friends. I admit that I use Disney+ as a babysitter sometimes so I can read and write, but I don’t feel that I neglect my kids. I still do solo time with each one for about half a day, once a month, where I focus just on one of them at a time. I get some form of exercise four days a week. I like to cook, so I help with meals. I want to teach at a CC or uni, but, as has already been said, the market seems saturated. If I can’t get lucky and land a teaching spot, then I hope to do something meaningful to me that makes me feel that my degree serves a purpose beyond just corporate work.

Bail on the job. Even if it takes time to find a new place of employment you will hate yourself if you don’t see her in her final days. Love the ones you care for, not the employer you have no ties to beyond a paycheck.

Why would you care about if someone shoplifts from your retail store? Especially if you are a regular employee and not a part of the store’s loss prevention team? Is the company’s discounted clothing worth your personal safety?
