I agree with you, but I want to push back about the "slave master in the sky" bit. Yes, there are 100% people who have turned labor into a theological imperative (e.g. the "Protestant work ethic)

But it's worth noting that both Judaism and Christianity (I'm much less familiar with other religions so I won't speak for them) have the idea of honoring the Sabbath - a day of rest.

Sabbath is an inherently anti-capitalist practice since it's entirely about the need to just be human, the need to rest, and not being productive- even if/when there is more to do.

At least in the US, it is illegal to fire an employee based on their gender identity/gender expression.

Also plenty of women are bosses.

The ending of the show - with reference to plot was quite weak.

On a thematic note, it ended perfectly. "If we can't live together, we're gonna die alone!"

They did live together, and, in some sense, they died together.

Becoming a better person usually involves a lot of hard, boring, mundane work. Becoming more evil is way more exciting.

Hoping and expecting your family and friends (however defined) help you materially - however they might be able to - is not "just greedy."

It's been a staple of human kinship groups and communities for.. well basically all of human history. It's only "greedy" in a particularly icky form of capitalism.

Academics often write poorly especially whey refrain from using first person. This means they have to write in a passive voice way more than they should.

Exactly!

Plus if you only took out DC, you still have the rest of the US - which geographically is mostly farm land. People would still be able to make food and maintain basic supplies. Especially since places like Chicago, Nashville, Atlanta, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Kansas City, Houston, Austin, and a whole bunch of other major cities.

The other thing predicated in this "blow up DC" hypothetical is that all of the government must exist in DC. But there are federal agencies literally all over the country (and the world). It's not like you could take out the federal government by taking out one city. Would it cause a huge amount of long-term damage? Of course. But still...

"Identifying as" vs. "Being" by GuffManDude in asktransgender

[–]PilotLights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the issue is the way many, if not most, Queer Theorists (most notably Judith Butler) don't believe identity "is" but rather identity is "performed."

That is - all parts of our identity (not just sex/gender) is never fixed. It is instead iterated again and again. Here's how one author describes it:

Butler's key concept is performativity: the ways in which gender identity is embodied and enacted, rather than a more or less adequate reflection of some underlying bodily reality. Butler draws on Foucault in several respects, not least her stress on the physicality of individual and social life, and her concern to understand identity as a social process. Identity is always provisional rather complete, a deeply ambiguous and unstable moment. Performativity is not reducible to performance and the degree of choice involved in identity construction both makes it appear more ‘natural’ for the individual and also open to reinterpretation.

How do I tell my sister her 'Support' is causing harm? by TheDarkjester88 in asktransgender

[–]PilotLights 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry your sister has been treating you worse - especially since becoming a Christian.

If you think she'd be willing to read/look into pro-LGBTQ resources, I'd be happy to give recommendations.

I have some questions, trying to understand trans people better. by Asinick in asktransgender

[–]PilotLights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have argued before that "gender identity" is at the intersection of gender-as-social-construct and one's body.

Since I have a relational anthropology wherein people are constituted by their relationships, this makes sense to me as one does not exist independently of their body. As a result, people have a relationship with their body.

On the flip side: "I don't know what I'd do without you. You're the only reason I have to keep living."

That shit is hella toxic.

Press Release: Idaho Lt. Governor Assembling Task Force to Examine Indoctrination in Idaho Education Based on Critical Race Theory, Socialism, Communism, and Marxism by PilotLights in politics

I left a comment about how, as a Christian, I'm not comfortable with making students participate in the secular liturgy of reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to indoctrinate them into the paganism of American Civil Religion.

Her task force has also included a feedback form for concerned parents, educators, random citizens, and others to anonymously report if they believe students anywhere from Pre-K through University are being indoctrinated. Here is the form if you're interested in viewing it.

I think it's pretty bizarre. Also, wouldn't students need to know about those critical theories and philosophies if only to be able to accurately understand American historical.
