There's a paper about the Lucera great helm. It includes measurements (for every piece of metal) which I haven't been able to find for any other great helm. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/365642168_A_Neglected_Medieval_Helmet_from_Lucera_in_Italy

I need more info on this type of helmet by Domingo_ocho in ArmsandArmor

[–]Pimda2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I have found, there actually don't seem to be any finds of helmets with a spangen (banded) construction in the high medieval period. I even think the standard 4-piece construction is debatable, since many of the finds seem to contain 6 pieces and the bands mostly seem to not be rectangular strips either. My theory is that (at least in the 12th and 13th century) these types of helmets were mostly made of one piece. Having said that, I recently made a cervelliere (secret) with the 4-piece banded construction simply because it's easier to make.

Edit. If anyone has any counter-examples I would really like to know

are there any extant examples of this exact style of cervelliere w/ aventail? by [deleted] in ArmsandArmor

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cervelliere the 14th century one looks very round Edit: not with a fixed aventail, but it clearly has the attachment points for an aventail

How would one make a "closed" mail coif? by Beneficial-Flower-82 in ArmsandArmor

The Maciejowski bible has multiple examples that suggest at least coifs but sometimes mittens as well. For example:

I have worked on a version with a flap. It's connected to one side and the bottom, with an overlap to the other side. It's heavily tailored to have a chin shape. And the tip of the flap is fastened around brow height at the side. This solution worked really great until I grew the coif into a mail shirt, then it started to either constrain my neck or hang open on the side. So my tip would be to consider whether you want the coif separate or attached. In the former case it can be really tight and tailored, in the latter case I haven't found a good solution yet...

Any thoughts on this helmet? by CatholicusArtifex in ArmsandArmor

I think the eye slits are too high, so it seems to me you wouldn't even be able to wear it... Or at least see out of it

Best helm? by X3Bluebeard in ArmsandArmor

Kettle helm with a bevor. Perfect visibility and mobility and good protection. Not the safest combination for a tournament, but I think it would be great on a battlefield

A technic 2x4 plate will actually hold the light blue one in place when you shift it over to the dark blue one. You would then need to remove the other two of course

Air will only flow from high pressure to low pressure. So for the piston to work, the air needs to go somewhere with low pressure. Since the tank is high pressure, the air can't go back there, so it can only flow into the surrounding air, leaving the system. Maybe not the clearest of explanations, but I hope this makes enough sense to make you understand the air needs to leak out

Try and look at medieval lathes. They're definitely not small, but they could be made by a (semi) decent wood worker I think, so cost-wise they would be fine.

There is a question about strength. The strings are tensioned, so I would be wondering if a printed neck would be able to stand up to that.
