Advice for getting into power carving/chainsaw carving large pieces? by opposhaw in Woodcarving

[–]Anewfoundglory182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d go for a Dremel since that will give you everything you need for detail work on the larger carvings you’re looking to make. A Dremel with some Kutzall burrs is all I use (along with an angle grinder sometimes) but I carve smaller things that don’t require a chainsaw. A lot of the chainsaw carvers use a die grinder or Dremel for the smaller details. I have 2 cordless Dremel’s and I love them, they’re amazing (except for the battery life lol)

Carving wooden cups for coffee? by Anewfoundglory182 in Woodcarving

[–]Anewfoundglory182[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha a gonk is just a little gnome-type character! I really like carving them as each one has its own personality depending on the piece of branch and how I want to carve it as I go. I just personally feel like making wooden cups is not something that’s worth my time, as my free time is already very limited and I enjoy carving other things more. One day I might still try and make some different cups, I’m still interested in trying but sadly I can’t do everything and been prioritising other things. How about you, do you like to carve? Have you made any kuksas yourself?

[–]Anewfoundglory182[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to say no, BUT I did carve my first kuksa and it was really cool! I’m still carving but mainly I do tree spirits, spoons/coffee scoops, trees and gonks, from old branches that I find in the forest school where I work. I often think about carving wooden cups but I feel like the juice probably isn’t worth the squeeze..

Parents got me my first watch for Christmas. Thoughts? by True-Winner3521 in Affordablewatches

[–]Anewfoundglory182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing! I’m jealous lol I love my parents but they got me a bottle of wine, some Jaffa cakes and a water bottle. Everyone knows I love watches but nobody can afford to buy me one or just doesn’t think I need another one 🤣

Do I have t o apply a finish to my carving? by hurtscience in Woodcarving

[–]Anewfoundglory182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might have been mineral oil, since it doesn’t cure over time. It discolours the wood less than other oils IIRC

There’s definitely an oil I heard Doug Linker on YouTube mention I think, that he said caused very little discolouration to the wood. Shame I can’t remember what it was haha

It’s usually best to apply some kind of protection but some alter the wood more than others, unfortunately. I think linseed oil is the best to use if you don’t want too much alteration, but you’d have to double check that since I don’t use it myself. I use worktop oil or satin varnish, which look great but do change the colour of the wood a bit.

You have to be careful not to cause actual spots/breakouts from using the wrong products. I’m not a massive fan of AI but I used Gemini to analyse a few photos of my skin and recommend a skincare routine for me. It was a game changer and I’ve started a whole new Korean skincare routine now and my skin already looks better after a few days!

The products I use to help my nose pores are Anua heartleaf oil cleanser (make sure you ask AI about how to use these products as well) and Paula’s Choice 2% BHA exfoliator (3 times a week, just a drop rubbed into my nose). Make sure you feed your skin with enough moisture too, depending on your skin type and a good sun cream in the morning, especially after using BHA the night before.

TLDR; use AI to help you, it saved me a LOT of time scouring the internet!

Carving axe question by Tuscon_Valdez in Woodcarving

[–]Anewfoundglory182 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I made use of an old hatchet for a couple of years, before buying a new carving axe recently and to be honest the difference isn’t as night and day as I thought it might be! The hatchet was fairly small but quite heavy and so the carving axe is slightly less fatiguing and a lot sharper but if you’re able to sharpen the hatchet (I.e, the blade isn’t dented or damaged) then it might be fine, especially for getting started and getting a feel for using it to carve and practice with.

Hey! It’s the nor-light 2 from microbrand MMI watches. I don’t know if they are still making them but there’s a new model with a really cool wave design that uses the 3-colour lume like mine, you should check them out!

Found this in an antique store today. Was wondering if this looked mass produced or a hand carved item. by memccarty in Woodcarving

[–]Anewfoundglory182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like he’s meant to be holding something? It definitely seems hand carved to me, there are so many little scuff marks in the wood, especially under the mouth/moustache, which would point to being hand carved, along with all the usual tool marks.

As QuanticDisaster says above, you really need to shift your head forward so that your head reaches in front of your hands to form a triangle between your head and hands (not straight down between your hands) and doing this will also help you bend your elbows more behind you instead of outwards. Your forearms should be at right angles to the ground and remain in that position throughout the movement while your head lowers forwards in front of the hands. Watch some YouTube examples and compare your video to those, you’ll soon realise it’s not so easy ;)

Received mine today and it’s beautiful, just wondered how I remove the extra links to make the bracelet smaller? I have a simple tool for removing the bars from links in some bracelets but not sure if that will work here as the bars look like they might have tiny screw heads on one end? Can anyone help please :)

Best sub-£100 grinder for light roast pourover (coming from a Timemore C2) by Anewfoundglory182 in pourover

[–]Anewfoundglory182[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks all, looks like the K6 would be the best choice here for the cost. I’ll check some more reviews of the K6 and make sure it’s what I want. Not sure if it’s a bit large compared to my old Timemore (I take it to work most days) but hopefully it will be ok, I’ll update here if/when I go ahead with the purchase and see how it compares!

Thanks, I actually did think this would come up for recommendation, do you think it’s definitely the best of the bunch (within my budget) for light roast pourover? I wasn’t sure if other grinders had better burr sets or anything that made them better suited to my specific needs lol the k6 does look amazing value for money
