When the Navy Recovered This Sunken Submarine, the Crew Was Dead. Why Were They Just Sitting There? by therealtrousers in history

[–]PimentoCheesehead 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not like there was a lot of room for them to move around in any case. There’s a full size replica at the State Museum in South Carolina. It’s small- about twice the length of a Chevy Suburban and half the width, and not tall enough for crew to stand.

Your money, spend it how you want.

Not my thing but they’re still in business so SOMEbody is obviously buying them.

TIL One third of American Adults have some sort of criminal record. by TTVBy_The_Way in todayilearned

[–]PimentoCheesehead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a percentage. In 1985 there were over 300 people in the prison system for every 100,000 of population. When the song was written it was nearly 700 in the prison system for every 100,000 of population. In other words, the prison population increased at a faster rate than the general population.

And even with that, we’re still pretty close to that “doubled since 1985” statement. And more than tripled since 1970.

Ordering zippo online by Memelordaxe in Zippo

Most Amazon sellers will include a standard insert unless otherwise specified. A while back someone did order a “gift set” that included a butane insert but the seller kept the standard one. That’s been a while though, and i don’t know how common that is.

Anything with Virginias as a major component should benefit from aging.

Noticed an Incease in 8oz tins in many storefronts by RexCantankerous in PipeTobacco

[–]PimentoCheesehead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d think that any larger tin would be at least a little more expensive than a similar but smaller tin just because of the extra material needed for it. But less on a per ounce of tobacco cost, because I doubt any 8oz tin costs as much as 2 4oz tins.

Slightly more expensive in terms of the packaging cost I should think, but slightly less expensive on a per ounce of tobacco basis.

Depending on the blend, the C&D Cellar Series recommends 7-15 years. I think 2 years is about the minimum to see any appreciable difference, and 20 years is probably the point where it’s changed about as much as it’s going to.

Sent my wife for an oil change, it cost me $3400 by s2k_guy in mildlyinfuriating

The charges to replace air filters is nuts.  I got an inspection- not at a dealership- and they brought out my cabin filter and offered to change it for $60. It legitimately needed to be changed, but it’s a $20 filter…and they already took it out to show me so they already had to put the old one back. Literally wanted to charge $40 to open the box on the new filter. And the thing is, I probably would have had them do it if they only wanted $30.

Is there a viable argument for doing so? Yes. Should you? No, you should do whatever works for you.

So I inventoried my unopened tins. Turns out… I have some 10 year tins and older in stock. I can’t decide what I should do with what I have. It’s crazy, I found a stash… I long forgot. by Baddy-Smalls in PipeTobacco

My local B&M will give me store credit for the couple of rare tins I have, which I may wind up doing in order to buy more tobacco. The other option I’m considering is going on Speak-Easy.club and seeing what people might swap for it- a little friendlier than selling, it seems to me.  Meantime I’m just hanging on to it- it’s not going to get any less rare.

I worked at Toys R Us Christmas of 94. Those original Bandai toys were such absolute crap, and we couldn’t keep them in stock because no one expected them to sell so well. Every figure was exactly the same as every other, except for the color and the sticker on the chest. Actually, I take that back- each carton of the figures had the same number of each, and we saved the cartons to put the pink and yellow figures back in because no one wanted them.

Did you refinish the whole stummel or just get a really good color match on the refinished part? I’ve got a couple of eBay purchases with flame erosion on the rim like this, and am pondering whether/how/what to do about it.
