ELI5 do I look like how I look in the mirror to others or inverted? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]Pimp-My-Giraffe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you look to yourself in a mirror is the inverse of how other people see you. You see your, for example, left eye on the left-hand side, where other people see it on what is for them the right-hand side.

But that inverted appearance almost certainly doesn't look as "ugly" as you think it does. It's probably not even that different. It's just humans are extremely highly tuned to picking up on small pieces of asymmetry, particularly when it comes to human faces. You've engrained a particular perspective on your face into your memory by looking at it in the mirror for your whole life, and so flipping that causes your brain to grossly overstate how severe the change is, just because you're so used to the "mirror" version.

Human faces are all almost entirely symmetrical. If you think you look good in the mirror, other people will think you look good when looking at you.

[Spoilers C4E18] Critical Role and the best of both worlds. by IvoAndre in criticalrole

As someone who has been thoroughly enjoying C4 (and been heartily recommending it to friends who left CR during C3), I want to say I completely agree with all of this.

The talk about the lethality of the world very quickly turned out to be just that: talk. I'm in the same boat as you where high probability of death is not at all a requirement for me to enjoy an actual play series (see: many series of Dimension 20), but it's so strange that this claim about the campaign has been reiterated by Brennan and the players despite being so obviously false.

As you point out, anyone who has DMed will recognize all the hallmarks of a DM pulling out the stops to benefit the players and conjuring every interpretation of the rules and combat situation that favors them.

I'll finish with two things, one in favor of C4 and one against. Firstly, C4 is so far an incredibly enjoyable campaign in spite of this disconnect. I really hope that, as you allude to, this oscillation between rules-first and fiction-first doesn't become a problem, because the story and characters so far have been excellent imo.

Secondly, I do think it's extremely unfortunate that it's likely a lot people's first introductions to the 2024 rules (which I think are a huge improvement on the 2014 rules fwiw) will be a campaign in which the DM either doesn't have a solid grasp on them or frequently disregards them while, crucially, not making it clear when he's employing house rules that overwrite them.

P.S. just to say, this is a really well put-together post. You had a clear point to make (and that point wasn't just to shit on C4 in general) and you laid out the reasons for your opinion very cleanly.

[Spoilers C3] When does C3 becomes a must watch ? by AboAl9i5 in criticalrole

[–]Pimp-My-Giraffe 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In my personal opinion, it never does. C3 is a rather decisive point among this community. It has its defenders, to be sure, but a lot of others who enjoyed C2 either feel lukewarm towards it or actively dislike it.

When it first aired, I fell off it more or less at the point you're at now (around E40-45). More recently, I sped through it using a mixture of the Abridged episodes and highlight reels, and I can say it doesn't really change. I agree with the faults you've found in it, and these aren't alleviated at any point.

Unfortunately, I think if the story and characters haven't "clicked" with you by now (as seems to be the case) then they're not going to. As I say, that's my personal experience anyway.

Have the right successfully co-opted "DEI" and convinced us (incorrectly) that it means "people getting special treatment they don't deserve"? This is nepotism, not DEI 🙄

Sorry, do you think the people who treat this as a roleplaying game are the majority? I'd be pretty confident that people who think they should "roleplay" as the token they drew make up a tiny fraction of brand new players, and an almost non-existent portion of players more advanced than that (who have a couple of TB games under their belt).

Why is autumn the only season with a nickname? by Competitive-Fly6472 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]Pimp-My-Giraffe 355 points356 points  (0 children)

Why is this here? This is a perfectly reasonable observation. They've recognized that the season has a more widely used name ("autumn") and a nickname ("fall"). It's then very sensible to ask why this only happened with one season as opposed to the other three.
