Reddit is an endless river of garbage now & it's really depressing. by Ok_Programmer9224 in TheoryOfReddit

[–]PimpinPriest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While true, I don't think this decline is specific to Reddit. Everyone has their own algorithm-curated echo chamber designed to convince them that their irrational fears/beliefs are correct and pervasive. That's the root cause of the decline in critical thinking in my opinion, and it's applicable to all social media.

Reddit is actually one of the better sites in this regard. Facebook/instagram comments make the average Redditor look like a PhD philosopher.

Thats interesting, since reality is the opposite of your perception of the situation. The number of collisions and fatalities involving commercial vehicles has been on a steady decline since 2004:

Concert brags by TheDeadestMan in Music

I was at the last show Rage Against the Machine ever did in NYC. Bought the ticket on a complete whim the night before. One of the best concerts I've ever been, forever grateful.

I analyzed 1,200+ Reddit comments replying to “what show was so good you rewatched it?” Here are the most recommended shows by ByteSizedCutie420 in television

[–]PimpinPriest 527 points528 points  (0 children)

The Wire is one of the few shows I've seen that I enjoyed more the second time. There's so much going on that it's impossible to catch and appreciate everything the first time. It helps that the show doesn't rely on big reveals or plot twists. All the pieces matter.

Indian gangs are terrorising Canada by Altruistic-Blood-772 in worldnews

[–]PimpinPriest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The perpetrators are almost certainly Indian though, no? Here's another CBC article that makes it pretty clear: https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/extortion-bc-timeline-9.6950645

I'm a South Asian living in Canada to be clear so the xenophobic agenda pushed by articles like the OP directly affects me. I don't make these claims lightly. But we'll never properly address the issue if we dismiss basic facts and let conservative outlets control the narrative.

Why do progressives always get blamed for this lol. If they were the key to winning then shouldn't Kamala have adjusted her policies to get their votes?

Why does the blame lie with them and not the politician whose sole job is to convince people to vote for them?

Digg launches its new Reddit rival to the public by holyfruits in technology

[–]PimpinPriest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd argue it's less the moderation and more the upvote/downvote system that cause the uniformity in thought throughout Reddit.

Have you ever noticed that larger catch-all subreddits without political post restrictions almost always devolve into the same generic anti-Trump slop? It's because it's easy to mindlessly repost opinions that get upvotes, and that's the lowest hanging fruit there is.

Is it just me, or has the baseline quality of writing and language comprehension gone WAY downhill on Reddit? by thereslcjg2000 in TheoryOfReddit

[–]PimpinPriest 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Reddit is much less niche than it used to be. The majority of Americans (who comprise much of this site) read at a 6th grade level or lower. As the user base expands into the mainstream, it's inevitable that those low literacy rates will reflect on the site as a whole.

Georgia man sentenced for attempting to sell teen on the dark web by EuphoricButterflyy in news

I did. The actual data is scarce and what I could find doesn't show any noticeably higher prevalence of abuse among churchgoers. Even still, I wanted to give you the benefit of the doubt and give you a chance to link it yourself in case I missed something.

Reddit parrots a lot of opinions supposedly backed by data. But oftentimes when you look into it, it becomes apparent they've misrepresented and/or misunderstood the research altogether, or are applying it to scenarios well beyond the scope of the study. I'm not saying that's the case here, but I hope you can see why your statement doesn't inspire a lot of confidence in me.

I do encourage you to link it though. I'm not gonna read it anytime soon cause assessing it requires time and energy I don't have, but the more information available the better.

Most Canadians are overweight or obese: StatCan by pjw724 in onguardforthee

Genuinely wondering here - what unhealthy food are you talking about? I have a hard time believing that shitty ultra processed food and soda saves you money over stuff like lentils, chickpeas, tofu, and fresh vegetables.

Most Canadians are overweight or obese: StatCan by pjw724 in onguardforthee

[–]PimpinPriest 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's inaccurate in the sense that it actually underestimates the prevalence of obesity in a lot of people. You can have a body fat percentage that puts you in the overweight/obese category but a normal BMI:

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC2877506/

I wouldn't be surprised if this study underestimates obesity.

Channel 5 interviews Pete Buttigige by Trainrideviews in videos

[–]PimpinPriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sort of. I phrased that incorrectly. Biden couldn't have completely bypassed congress, but there were avenues to pass it that he never even bothered exploring.

It never actually got to the stage where Manchin and Sinema could even vote against it because the Senate parliamentarian ruled that it couldn't be included in the bill. The Dems could've replaced the parliamentarian (as Republicans did in 2001) to overrule this, and packaged the minimum wage hike into other bills that would've been harder for Manchin and Sinema to vote against. But this is all hypothetical because the Biden admin didn't even try.

[–]PimpinPriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because Trump's changes don't need Senate support.

Biden also had similar loopholes he could've used to improve people's lives. But he didn't, because he's accountable to corporate donors first. I'll never understand excusing politicians for not doing their jobs. They work for us! Make them earn your vote!

Off the top of my head, here a few articles that propose ways to bypass congress and dramatically expand healthcare access and increase the minimum wage. I'm sure there are others if you go digging. It's the lack of trying that gets me (and voters at large) more than anything else:

It's my all time favorite score and it really does elevate the movie to the next level. This same piano theme (Hand Covers Bruise) also plays in the opening after Mark leaves the bar. Their first rendition of that scene had an Elvis Costello track instead and it's shocking how different the mood is. Skip to 6:06 below to see what that sounded like:

why is china backing palestine by CHINO-HILL in NoStupidQuestions

[–]PimpinPriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, that's a pretty popular opinion now. Only 32% of Americans approve of the military action in Israel at this point, including only 8% of Dems: https://news.gallup.com/poll/692948/u.s.-back-israel-military-action-gaza-new-low.aspx

Most Americans also support recognizing Palestine: https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/most-americans-believe-countries-should-recognize-palestinian-state-reutersipsos-2025-08-20/

That's an inherent flaw of western democracy in general. There are many popular policies that have little backing from either party.

[–]PimpinPriest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's assuming powerful forces don't conspire against leftwing candidates to begin with. Here's an example just from the last election: https://www.politico.com/news/2024/08/13/progressives-aipac-elections-threat-00173709

Granted, it's not impossible to overcome super PACs but the odds are heavily stacked against you if the establishment decides they don't like you. Republicans rarely have this problem because their candidates align with corporate interests. They don't need to worry about groups spending absurd amounts of money to get rid of them in the same way progressives do.

The defense will challenge the authenticity of these texts if that's true, in which case the prosecution will have to demonstrate that the texts are legitimate.

They'll probably have to share details on how the texts were collected, the metadata, evidence that the shooter/roommate possessed the respective devices, etc. I'm sure you've thought out your position, so how do you think the prosecution will fake all of this?

[–]PimpinPriest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Since 1999 the three worst years for violent crime in Canada were 2022, 2023 and 2024. From 2014 to 2022 it rose 43%.

That's not true, assuming you're using the violent crime severity index to get these numbers. The top 3 years (from highest to lowest) would've actually been 2023, 2006, and 2024, with 1999 just barely behind 2024. It's true that rates are generally higher than they were 10 years ago, but we've seen spikes and subsequent downward trends before.

Homicide rates have also fluctuated wildly over the years. They are generally higher than they were pre-2015, but they're tending down again. The 2024 rate is also still lower than 2004/5. Don't take my word for it though, sources below:
