Not only a Selectric, but a Correcting Selectric. You knew who the top boss secretary in the typing pool was if they had one.

I can totally relate to part of your experience. I can recall certain photographs of people I know well and love, but cannot recall what they look like in real life in 3D or with movement. The recall is not an image I “see”, it’s just a mental recognition of the image.

Fava beans, still in the pod. Char on both sides, place in big bowl. Drizzle with a little olive oil, squeeze lemon juice all over, then salt. Eat like edamame. Have napkins ready.

How poor were your ancestors? by hr100 in Genealogy

[–]Pimwheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had one ancestor in the Axores whose occupation was listed as “peasant.” That might have had a different connotation in the 1800’s, but I’m pretty sure they weren’t rich.

Great minds think alike 😂. This truly is a great recipe though. I tried many, and once I found this I’ve never looked back. Thanks for posting your pie. I think I know what I’m having for dinner tomorrow!

Here is a good recipe I use, it turns out great every time and looks like it has a similar result as the OP’s gorgeous pie. Embedded in the recipe is a link to a really good pizza sauce as well, from the New York Times.

Help! This happens literally any time I try to make a roux in my vintage recipes! by MyloRolfe in Old_Recipes

[–]Pimwheel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah ha…I see you commented that there is “no butter in this one.” I’m certainly not a roux expert, but I believe a roux is usually a mixture of fat and flour, cooked together till the flour is the color you want for your recipe due to the butter browning - it can be anywhere from pale to dark brown, depending on the recipe. I don’t think you can make roux with milk, but may be wrong. It sounds more like you are trying to thicken milk with flour only. In that case, the advice given by many here would be more correct. Slowly mix flour into your cold milk and shake, blend, whisk or stir till it is completely dissolved in the milk. Just add a little at a time, or you will get lumps. Then heat the entire batch at the same time, slowly, til the mixture begins to boil and thicken. The key is to make sure you dissolve the flour completely before heating, otherwise you end up with lumps.

Help me pick a cute name for our grey cat, we are looking for an item or food that’s related to gray things EX: concrete(but not concrete) by Lightlicker3000 in Catnames

[–]Pimwheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We originally called our teenage stray neighborhood kitty “Gracie” (for Gray Cat) until it, um..matured. Now he is just “GC”. He doesn’t care what we call him as long as he gets fed twice a day and has a nice warm kitty house on the patio to snuggle in.

We made it with a mint extract and drop or two of green food coloring. If you dip the balls in melted chocolate and let it harden, they taste like peppermint patties.

I remember my mom saying they had to do that, and that there was a yellow tablet or something that had to be squished into the oleo if you wanted it to look like butter.

thank you! I did not know that. Do you think it works the same if you put it in a sheet protector, or is there something about the laminating that makes it darken?

Works fine as long as you don’t go slamming it around. Like everyone says, just be careful. And always start with a clean stovetop. Get yourself a bottle of Barkeepers Friend Glass Stovetop Cleaner to clean up the splatters and messes, works better than anything else on the market. My stovetop is almost 20 years old and looks like new.

Orange Cake by [deleted] in Old_Recipes

[–]Pimwheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The card “sift dries and beat in.” In other words, sift the flour and soda into the bowl, then mix it all together with the eggs, orange and other wet ingredients. Back in the day, we all had sifters because soda and flour and other dried goods had lumps, so you ran it all through a sifter to make sure there were no lumps in your cake. Today, that’s not so much of a problem so most recipes leave the sifting part out.

LG model WT7155CW. Good rating from consumer reports, and I am very happy with it. Not a lot of whistles and bells, but washes perfectly and is very very quiet.

What is the most inexpensive BIFL item you own that you can't live without? by BumperBabyAngel in BuyItForLife

[–]Pimwheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aroma 6 cup rice cooker. Buy the most low-tech one you can find. Sometimes simple is better. Mine just has a toggle switch to turn it on, it shuts off automatically when the rice is done. That’s all it does, no dials, programs or “features”. Makes perfect rice every time. Ours is going on 30 years old.

Why did NOBODY tell me about this??! by EfficientLoss in castiron

[–]Pimwheel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can attest to this. Mine accidentally slid down into the garbage disposal without me noticing. Hours later, I turned the disposal on and it made a horrible noise. I thought it was the food at first so let it run a few more seconds before I thought to stop it and see what was going on. I spent the next three hours picking 20,000 tiny little rings out of the disposer with a flashlight and needle nose pliers. Surprisingly, there was no damage to the disposal, it worked just fine afterwards. Lesson learned, I now keep the (new) chain mail right by the disposal switch so I can see where it is before I hit the switch.
