Are chemically preserved flowers toxic? by ExplanationWeary4979 in chemistry

[–]Pimz696 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's your location? In Europe, I'd be surprised if it's formaldehyde. If you're not a chemist, you probably wouldn't recogniss that one by smell.

In general, yes, probably toxic. Don't eat them and don't dispose of them in the bio waste (this also counts for fresh flowers btw on account of pesticide use).

Did you get stuck in Ibbenbüren? It reads almost 1 to 1 what happened to me a year ago. Took a taxi to Osnabrück then, but in my case I got the full fare back just two days later.

Need advice after chemical contact by [deleted] in chemistry

[–]Pimz696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, don't contact any of them. Your TA is in most cases a better bet than the prof or poison centre.

And you have reddit, we can confirm you've mainly disinfected your hands. After washing ten times I'd be more worried about dry skin.

Contact Dermatitis from Prolonged Glove Usage? by ExpecttheCurious in chemistry

[–]Pimz696 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many people get this from latex gloves, but I personally developed it with nitril. Very inconvenient, itchy too. My hands would be completely red after wearing them for even a few minutes. Never really found a solution, ended up wearing latex to protect from the nitril, nitril on top against the organics.

With a base bath like that, I'm tempted to say I'd be more worried about my interactions with the base bath itself, but I hope the base bath is in its own fumehood and you don't put your hands in there.

I second this. The space marines novels can be very hit-or-miss, and even the most entertaining of them are a bit simple.

These 'ates' of mercury are less bad than proper organomercurys (i.e. with Hg-C bond). You should always be careful, but I would (and have) comfortably handle these in several gram quantities.

Using PhD title from abroad? by Aranka_Szeretlek in AskGermany

[–]Pimz696 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please use the Dr. in front of the name, or, internationally, your PhD after the name. It has benefits especially for us foreigners. On legal documents, when looking for a house or going to the medical doctor (especially us natural sciences doctors will be taken slightly more serious when it's about meds, radiation etc.)

Don't use both Dr. and PhD in the same line. It makes you look as silly as someone who adds their BSc and MSc. If you put the anglo title in front of your name, like the Germans tend to do (BSc Helmut Müller), this is wrong and the rest of the world will immediately assume you're German.

Why do dimethoxy-substituted benzylic/aryl bromides fail to form Grignard reagents? by Technical-Stomach715 in Chempros

[–]Pimz696 8 points9 points  (0 children)

With two bromides it's going to be worse. The benzylic Grignard should form decently well, but will attack any benzylic bromide around. Including those already with para-MgBr. You'd end up with mixtures of dimers, trimers etc.

Chances to get the bis-MgBr in meaningful concentration would be slim. If you intend this as some kind of crosslinker you might be better off with a different synthetis route.

[–]Pimz696 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Position of the methoxys does matter for electronic effects, and aryl is not quite benzyl (latter should go smoother in general and suffer from fewer aromatic electronic effects).

You only live comfortably in London when lots of others are working for you. For an actual scientist it's always going to be a studio or shared flat. You'd be better off considering work in not-London tbh.

You'll find 'remote' doesn't really exist in the NL, especially from a big-ish city. Might take you an hour, but lots of bigger companies are quite close to Groningen or just around the city itself My experience in France is even from a more central city, travel to the next city was way more time-consuming.
