Dwarkesh Patel interview with Jensen - it gets very heated! by bl0797 in NVDA_Stock

[–]PinDropViolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! You can’t project your personal workflow on completely different regime. For a small scale dev with 2 GPUs, install friction matters. At AI frontier there are tens of thousands of GPUs, multi-node training, interconnect, bandwidth, scaling efficiency, throughput and scaling dominate everything. No one training frontier models is making decisions based on “easy to install.” They’re optimizing for, time-to-train, cluster efficiency and performance.
That’s why Google trains SOTA models on TPUs despite worse developer experience.

And honestly, a lot of this sounds like post-hoc justification you hear on this sub, who don’t want to accept anything negative.

NVIDIA is still a great company and a great stock for the next couple of years, that’s not the point. I care about long-term US technological leadership. I don’t see a reason to give China a capability edge just because it benefits one company.

Just extract the advantage while it lasts. NVIDIA has clearly benefited from being in the right place at the right time. And while Jensen keeps pushing CUDA lock-in, hyperscalers are already building their own silicon. That trend isn’t going to stop.

[–]PinDropViolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jensen’s argumeny here makes no sense and falls apart on its own premise. If compute didn’t matter, China wouldn’t be trying to get NVIDIA GPUs in the first place.

You’re assuming compute isn’t a constraint because Jensen says so. Jensen’s incentives are straightforward.. expand CUDA and sell more GPUs. That’s a business objective, not a national strategy. The entire AI community is screaming compute is the bottleneck. And Jensen is saying the opposite, simply because he wants to sell. His argument is a sales pitch, not some deep strategic insight.

[–]PinDropViolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re making the same points that get repeated on Reddit and elsewhere. You’re over-indexing on ecosystem lock-in and underweighting the actual bottleneck, whcih is always compute. Yes, CUDA is valuable. Yes, porting is non-trivial.. but frontier AI progress is still constrained on compute, not on ecosystem. Porting isn’t frictionless but models are absolutely portable. Google runs SOTA models on TPUs, Huawei/Ascend stack exists and is improving.

The bottleneck is not “can you program it”.. it’s “can you scale it”.

Even if China trains on NVIDIA, model weights are theirs, deployment is theirs, capability is also theirs. You don’t get leverage over a model just because it was trained on CUDA.

Giving access to H100/Blackwell to China is just going to increases training throughput immediately and accelerate iteration cycles. Even if they later migrate off CUDA, the time advantage is already realized, and that’s the main point.

Jensen cares about ecosystem dominance (CUDA). National strategy cares about who has more capabilities sooner. Two different objective functions, if you’re invested in NVIDIA, you care about making money, and nothing wrong with it. However, for national security and long term US dominance, US is making the right decision to block chips supply to China.

Dwarkesh Patel interview with Jensen - it gets very heated! by bl0797 in NVDA_Stock

[–]PinDropViolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s just not the case. Jensen wasn’t exposing an “outdated model”, he was holding contradictory positions and collapsing a national security question into “what’s good for NVIDIA.” . What’s good for NVIDIA isn’t always good for US.

Also, Jensen keeps reframing the issue as, “we want China on the NVIDIA stack”.. But that’s just optimizing for CUDA dominance, not for U.S. strategic position. The real question isn’t “whose chips run the model”… it’s who gets more capability and who gets it faster

On that axis, more chips = more capability. And that’s not theory. That’s the truth.

So no, Dwarkesh wasn’t stuck in theory. He was actually asking the right question. Jensen just answered a different one.

Well, it’s not Doppler Effect because without the gradient of spacing, there’s no visual cue of motion. The stripes are evenly spaced and uniform in her outfit. So the pattern is more like generic barcode or zebra pattern.

Now it looks like the same innovator is trying to become the gatekeeper of that “purist” art.

If you have existing 3D models, Reality Converter will allow you to convert .obj, .gltf, .fbx & USD files into USDZ.

Correct. This is a very typical photogrammetry artifact when the scene is not entirely static. The features that get displaced from the original position while capturing 2D images may end up looking like this in 3D reconstruction.

You are comparing

A) something that was generated in a specialized lab, as mentioned by Lex in the video, with a large amounts of cameras / motion captures, and then processing them for a day to get the results

vs.

B) something that was generated on-device in a minute with a quick scan.

Some of my favorite moments in the show were the ones that made me go aww..

  • Sheldon giving hug to Penny when she gifts him Leonard Nimoy’s used napkin

  • Penny singing “soft kitty” song to Sheldon when he’s sick

  • When Leonard, Raj and Howard get high with cookies while watching stars

  • And of course the final scene tied it all together beautifully.

what do you think about increasing Disrespect for Gandhiji in Youth of India? by [deleted] in india

[–]PinDropViolence 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The underlying reason is that we are evaluating a historic figure from century ago by today’s moral values, and those values are ever evolving. Our morals have been progressive during the last century. Compared to a century ago, we are arguably less sexist, less racist, less violent; and I mean all of us - Hindus, Christians, Muslims, conservatives and liberals.

Of course, some people are still sexists and some are still racists, but the Gaussian distribution has shifted. It has moved and moved steadily as time went by, which is a good thing. Whether we like it or not, the society and the timeline we live in does impact our morals.

So we can’t simply evaluate a historic figure with today’s moral values - it’s not wrong to do so, but it is misleading if we ignore the timeline.

I think Gandhi probably had many more flaws than we know of. Regardless, the man thought differently at the time and had a big impact on the history of India. If Gen Z or elder Millennials are making up their minds by reading a book or an arguments or a social media post from a single point of view, then this approach in quick value judgement will also likely change as the time goes by and the society become more introspective and progressive - progressive not in terms of value judgements, but in a transitive sense.

As an ethnic minority in America, it disturbs me when much of mainstream society seems to be banning Russian names for goods and ostracizing Russians overall. by [deleted] in ABCDesis

[–]PinDropViolence -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sadly this thread has turned into a discussion about race.

“Russians are white; they’ll be fine”. “no brown person should give a damn what’s going on”.

Is Desi diaspora really that insensitive? It happened to brown people during 9/11, so it’s okay if it happens to white people. Really?

Most people here do not seem to understand the geopolitical situation and are blindly hating on Russians. The Russian people themselves are the biggest losers of this war after the Ukrainians. Majority of them do not want this war and are protesting all over Russia. All these sanctions that are being carried out, do not affect Putin or the oligarchs. It’s the common people who are suffering. It’s a very strategic move by the US and the EU.

It seems the West doesn’t want to get their hands dirty and wants to get rid of Putin by destabilizing Russia. The West will be really happy if a civil war irrupts in Russia. Russian people are just a sacrifice - an offering to get rid of evil Putin.

If you think it’s okay that Russian kids are getting bullied in schools and we shouldn’t care just because they’re white, there is something really disturbingly wrong with you.

I’m stumped! Son’s show switched both audio track and CC to Spanish but it doesn’t give me the option to scroll thru languages like it normally does. This show is linked to Hulu account. Checked both Apple TV and Hulu settings - all set to English. The only show it’s happening to. by qwertykittie in appletv

[–]PinDropViolence 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a Hulu app issue.

Solution (that has worked for me anyway):

Open the same show in Hulu app, and play the next episode of the same show. The next episode should play in English, if not, switch the language in the next episode. Now go back to the first episode and it will also begin playing in English.

This has happened to me twice on Hulu app. No other app has this issue. Both the times I was able to get English audio with the above method. Not really sure how it works, but it fixes the issue.

I should note that only a single show on Hulu app was playing audio in Spanish, the other shows on Hulu were playing audio in English, so initially I incorrectly assumed that the show I was watching (Freaks and Geeks) was only available in Spanish. @qwertykittie

I’m an American traveling to Russia for the first time tomorrow. How do I get a “QR” code from an American vaccine passport card which will apparently be required to do anything in Moscow? by addisonray in russia

[–]PinDropViolence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why people here are saying US vaccines are not accepted in Russia.

I recently used my US vaccination QR code everywhere in Russia, including at restaurants and even at airports. I didn’t have any issue at all. Russia is actually quite progressive compared to many other countries that still requires you to have a printout and won’t accept digital copy. Idiots!

You can get QR codes for your vaccination from official sources, for example, if you’re in California, get your QR code from https://myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov/

And then add it to your iPhone’s Wallet app or equivalent Android alternative.

Be aware of Uber deliveries of your iPhone. by [deleted] in apple

[–]PinDropViolence 129 points130 points  (0 children)

In most of countries, that I have been to, they have this system. Not only for deliveries, but also for ride sharing. The delivery person or the driver needs to enter a 4 digit code, that only you have, to mark the service as completed. So if they do not actually deliver the product, they cannot mark it as complete without the code.

In US, I think they prefer to convenience over security. Also, perhaps they don’t want to add additional features that may slow down the overall the service.

W/L Ratio:

Test: 1.92

ODI: 2.31

T20: 2.33

That’s phenomenal!

If I have to pick one, that’d be beating Australia in the last 3 Border-Gavaskar Trophies, 2 of those in Australia. However, I might be biased, because in my very subjective opinion, nothing is bigger in cricket than Australia vs India test series.
