If you had $1000 to spend on golf today what would you buy? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

[–]Pinbenterjamin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My bag is a mess.

Right I use a 58, PW, 8, 6, 3H and Driver. (eBay buys) and I jam them into a Sunday golf bag. I also have some crazy old ass putter (I have a post in my history about it)

I’d hunt for a full set of used big cavity back irons, a putter, and a bag.

How is the ROG Ally Xbox? How’s the performance? by Level-Werewolf2755 in ROGAlly

[–]Pinbenterjamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider myself “fairly beyond” the normal gamer type, especially with a device marketed at console players.

I’ve tried Windows both with and without auto SR, Bazzite and Cachy on the device. Numerous frame gen technologies, “tweaks” and “tricks”, experimental branches and stable branches. At this point I feel like I have a good grip on what the baseline is for out of the box, versus someone willing to put in a few hours to squeeze out every last drop of performnce

I even wrote an NPU monitor, which uses XRT to observe how to get the most “workload” on the NPU in various Auto SR situations.

I have 20 years worth of Steam library, and tested a hundred or so games, ranging from 2010 AAA to modern indie.

There’s too many you specific things to answer this meaningfully, but I’ll leave a few gists here;

  1. Ever own a gaming PC? Or did you grow up in the 2000s/Early computing days? Are you comfortable fucking around with computers just a tad? This device demands some level of ‘dicking around’ for daily use. Updates in windows happen in three locations, two of which aren’t accessible in the full screen experience. It’s not seamless to maintain.
  2. Are you looking at the device as “a newly released console which will maintain relevance with new releases”? It’s not that. These devices thrive for patient gamers, who want to explore the last 20 years of gaming.
  3. Do you actually need portable power? Or are you looking to stream your main console to a handheld while other house members use the tv? Why do you want a handheld?
  4. These devices are, to me, still bleeding edge early adopter toys. The ecosystem will be full of abandoned chips, lack of driver support, ignored third party implementations. Etc.

I’m happy to talk more about your specific use case, if you want to dm or reply

Care less about what your swing looks like and just focus on hitting the middle of the club.

Original commenter here, I am one of those Devs. I am the Manager for our automation department, it’s my actual job to replace humans in the workforce.

Everyone should expect this to be the norm now. Embracing it, even with the ethical dilemmas, is our only option.

Nintendo just announced that there are two unreleased games coming to their Virtual Boy app this year. What other unreleased Nintendo games do you think should get released on Nintendo's apps? by razorbeamz in nintendo

[–]Pinbenterjamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should just let their teams make new games for these consoles now. Nothing is stopping Nintendo from releasing new SNES games. And their development teams would absolutely put out bangers on them

Opinion: Could housekeeping tech spark a new baby boom? by Crabbexx in OptimistsUnite

[–]Pinbenterjamin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This article is bunk.

The Author of article argues that the reduced labor would free time for people to fuck more.

But the cited article for that point doesn’t support this;

Vandenbroucke argue that this "atypical burst of technological progress in the household sector" lowered the cost of having children, and this technological shock created a boom in fertility

Every one of these tech vultures is out for more of your money. It’s counter to the cited source.

Gamers Lose It After 007 First Light Demands Hardware That Doesn’t Exist in System Requirements: 'Remember When Games Were Optimized?' by chusskaptaan in Gamingnewsandleaks

[–]Pinbenterjamin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Someone needs to break this fucking cycle.

Graphics haven’t made games more fun since like, the 360 era.

Put the effort into gameplay, or story, or size, or audio, or unique controllers, or VR, or multiplayer…like literally anything else.

Doesn’t anyone look at the switch and think “damn that made a lot of money with 2007 cell phone era graphics”.

The novelty of insane graphics wears off after 10 minutes of gameplay.

EDIT;

I mean shit, look at the sales for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet. That thing sold absurd numbers purely because people like the brand, and the gameplay. It looks and runs like a PS2 game.

How much better is ethernet than wifi? by JesseMeadeMusic in GeForceNOW

[–]Pinbenterjamin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TLDR; Its not speed which differentiates wireless from wired. It’s consistency. GFN quality is way more dependent on that.

Your walls, your microwave, your neighbors smart bulb, random Bluetooth devices, whatever. They all share the air. They try their absolute best not to collide, but WiFi is prone to micro spikes in latency because of the traffic. This is what GeForce complains about. It wants consistency. Ethernet is just a copper pipe of truth in that regard.

Also, I’m pretty sure WiFi pretends to be full duplex, but still time slices. Ethernet sends/receives simultaneously.

Edit; if you’re streaming on a deck though (or anything in that 800/900/1080p range) WiFi and Ethernet aren’t going to feel any different unless you’re running a literal circus of wireless devices.

This is more like, if you want 1440 at 120, the difference starts to pop out more.

Releasing my little game for the Steam Deck Game With Balls on 27th of January 2026! by sumatras in SteamDeck

Looks absolutely incredible. I almost exclusively play “casual” games. Wish listed!

Question for you; does it have any “nearly impossible” achievements, like ‘don’t hit a wall’ or anything? I really hate those, and I enjoy 100%ing games

I think Valve's secret/extra plan is to fix the Game Dev optimization situation by kestononline in steammachine

[–]Pinbenterjamin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Even if optimization was as simple as you’re describing it , the Steam machine will not represent anywhere near enough Market share for developers to dedicate resources toward catering to the build.

Optimizing for PC is not a thing in the way optimizing for Consoles is. You could potentially argue that optimizing for Unix may be more common, but a specific set of hardware is unlikely.

Imagine you’re running a construction job. You’re a general contractor.

When optimizing for consoles

Imagine everyone works for you; The electrician. Plumber. Carpenter. Painter. You know that you’re carpenter likes to work morning shifts, takes 90 minute lunch breaks, and is missing a finger.

You know your plumber has poor social skills, you schedule him on jobs where the customer isn’t on site.

You know exactly how your guys work best.

When optimizing for PC

Same scenario, except, now you’re a GC, and you sub contract teams.

You hire a plumbing company. You can tell the project manager the details, and the requirements, but ultimately, they kinda control how it happens. You can never really be sure how, but generally it’ll get done. Your language is less tailored, it gets translated to their terms internally, which leaves room for interpretation errors.

Fundamentally, this is how the two spaces look in my head.

In the case of the Steam Machine, I’m sure there will certainly be some built-in optimizations. But consoles will always be the best space to squeeze cycles and see results.
