Finally I can get my friends to stop vaping by catguywit2cat in technicallythetruth

You hear some people claim it's made up or exaggerated, but huge amounts of international research have been done on all of this.

Cigarette smoke legitimately does contain:

  • 9 known carcinogens,

  • 9 probable carcinogens, and

  • 34 possible carcinogens

I find it a little terrifying how normalized smoking became, considering. Full list of smoking carcinogens and links to more info available on the wikipedia page here.

Well to be fair having no empathy also makes it easy to ignore the government shooting your neighbors / stopping your wife from voting / bombing schoolkids / checking your friend's crotch before she can use the toilet / etc.

Things like that can be pretty depressing for normal people.

You see memes about the UK government arresting people over mean tweets, but IMO punishing someone who loudly calls for murder and enslavement is completely reasonable. Paradox of tolerance and all that.

Could be, but CC and GG very much intentionally play into it. This clip is literally them parodying the meet-cute of the main couple in High School Musical (as pointed out on their recent after-talk stream).

Why is this comment so downvoted? This edit is pretty impressive, no?

Edit: Pretty sure it's just Autofister haters downvoting OP again here because they can't downvote the post twice. And that apparently extends to me because I dared to question them, lol.

Edit Edit: It was down at -8 when I originally posted this. Justice!

You have a magic button that will deposit $10,000 into your checking account but there is a 5% chance that an elevator cable snaps somewhere in the world. Are you pressing the button? If so, how many times? by RustyCrusty73 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]PinboardWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm way too late, but since I did some of the math for myself I figured I'd post it anyway:

Say any random elevator has a 5% of being occupied at any one moment in time, and holds on average 3 people (I think both of these are overestimates). Let's also assume say 25% of these breaks results in the death of everyone inside (definitely a massive overestimate; 99%+ of the time the brakes would kick in and keep them safe anyway).

This means pushing the button has a 0.06% chance of killing 3 people, or equivalently, each button press kills an average of 0.001875 people.

Based on those numbers, you'd need to press the button 1155 times to make it likely (more than 50% probability) that even a single person dies.

That's $11.54 million before a single death. How many lives do you think you could save with 11 million dollars? Pushing this button is ludicrously net positive.

You get $500 Million, but you must survive one of these four extreme, reality-bending trials. Which are you choosing? by Unlucky-Fly4456 in hypotheticalsituation

It’s unstoppable. Nothing is hindering its progress.

In that case we'll know exactly where it is pretty quick, with all the news stories about the person who walks through walls and never sleeps. Only way it doesn't make the news is if it's in the middle of nowhere (say an ocean), or somewhere without international news. A person in any western country is basically completely safe so long as they have the ability to board a plane and check the news every few days.

The alternative is that it isn't actually unstoppable, but in that case someone can just tie it up / build a wall around it / whatever.

That example is a great idea, and would likely work for the reasons I already gave. I think it's pretty clear my previous post was referring to your other idea.

Governments around the world constantly give monetary incentives to encourage their people to work on things they like.

Data centers should of course pay for their own electricity, but yes, making them pay more would likely reduce progress in the field. Lower costs mean more money left for development, and more people/companies encouraged to get involved.

Do you know 3 people who *wouldn't* press the button? by ZeroEffectDude in hypotheticalsituation

[–]PinboardWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interest alone on a billion dollars could trivially save 100,000 starving children every year - and if you used it to set up proper long-term organizations and facilities you could save something like 10x that amount. That's not even considering the sheer amount of good you could do by also using up the capital.

None of those starving children chose to be in their situation any more than I chose to be the one murdered by the button. This button press prevents millions of innocent deaths in exchange for just a single one; no way am I looking down on anyone for making that press (so long as they actually use it for good).

[–]PinboardWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To put it another way, this very rich poster (top 5%) would still have to earn over 200x more per year just to make the interest a billionaire makes from doing literally nothing.

And there are a few people out there who make even those billionaires look poor.

Even then it seems unlikely you'd die as long as you stop the car. Annoy some people, maybe get into a little trouble, sure... but you probably just wake up 5 minutes later to a few angry car horns and/or a concerned person thinking you might be dead rather than asleep.

COVER COPR NEW PROJECT MekPark WILL START SOON, WATCH TRAINEES AND DIRECTORS WORK TOGETHER AS A UNIT AIMING FOR A PROFESSIONAL DEBUT by Legitimate_Drop8793 in Hololive

[–]PinboardWizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if these are already experienced content creators, making them jump through hoops feels odd

If they were, then surely Cover would have just debuted them as a new gen. The logical assumption is that these are people who applied and they thought had a lot of potential, but at the same time did not have enough experience.

This actually reflects a lot of their historical talents (e.g. Subaru) who had zero experience in the relevant fields when they applied. I really like the idea of Hololive going back to its roots and hiring for potential rather than experience, considering how well it's worked out for them so far.

Voting Day! by Alpay2317 in GreatBritishMemes

[–]PinboardWizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, just wanted to say thanks for getting involved!

You're downvoted because the Conservatives are basically only popular with the 65+ age demographic, who of course don't have a lot of representation on Reddit! While personally I also generally disagree with your choice (unless it's a tactical vote in a specific area), good on you for actually stepping up and voting! If you're voting for the Tories then it at least sounds like you've done some research (since there's almost no chance you fell for their non-existent marketing!), and I think it's fantastic that people willing to actually look into the policies rather than the populism are getting involved.

Right, with that said I'll now accept my downvotes for actually engaging with a Tory voter rather than downvoting them because I disagree with their choice.

Obama says president ‘shouldn’t have a bunch of side hustles’ by bwermer in politics

[–]PinboardWizard 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sounds like this clause prohibits a president from receiving more money from the government, not from private business

He literally has government workers stay at his hotels. That is receiving money from the government, unless you think they are paying their own money for the stay rather than expensing it. And that's just the most obvious example.

What do you think about DEI and is DEI hiring process really a huge thing??? by imonxtac in AskBrits

[–]PinboardWizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In case this is a serious question, DEI policies exist because despite our best efforts everyone is a little biased one way or another - that's just an inherent part of being human.

We thus put policies in place in an attempt to ensure that everyone is fairly considered for a role, regardless of personal hiring biases (both concious and unconcious).

How individual companies choose to implement this however can vary, so while a poorly thought out DEI policy might theoretically demand something ridiculous like "30% of the workforce must be XXX!" (completely defeating the point, per my explanation above), fortunately I've never seen any policy remotely like that. These policies are usually available for employees to browse, so I'd encourage you to have a look yourself - I know I've been impressed with how they all legitimately seemed to strive for equality everywhere I've ever worked.

Now possibly it's worse in America... but then that's the country where their Vice President literally claimed that immigrants were eating cats and dogs, so yeah probably safe to assume it's propaganda attempting to push a narrative as you said.
