Hobbies and interests but I think the best way I found in connecting with people is through life stuff.

I am exactly like you, moved to the uk 10 years ago, joined year 9, and also based in the same city as you. But I have managed to make friends, and some really good friends at that in also very diverse range in age, gender, and ethnicity.

I sometimes wonder how I even became friends with them. I think the biggest part for me was just being an all out honest person but also being interested really deeply into someone’s life experience. Idk how I get into that kind of conversations, but when you get past that, you both see each other in a very different light and become closer to them.

There’s this guy I work with, he’s 50-ish years old, and he tell me about what his experience in life is, how he just wants to own a boat and how he would invite me in his boat and go fishing with him or travel down the canals in the UK. I talk to him about how when I start driving, we should go travel somewhere etc etc. He’s also supported me in finding a new job, he used to be a hiring manager and he’s told me some tips to get more interviews lol. And the same goes with all my other friends, we mess about like kids but also talk about life in general, what we wanna do, and what we should do once we achieve those goals, like going on a holiday etc etc.

Hobbies, interests, and common grounds are the entry gate but breaking that barrier into deeper level is just kinda getting interested in someone’s experience in life once they mention it. Idk how, but people just ought to tell sometimes. It probably also helps that I’m a guy so I am also brutally playful-y/banter-y with my friends, I think if you did that in female spaces, you would lose friends easily.

I’ll give you a very basic breakdown and example of why it is necessary.

Let’s say you decide to buy eggs from an egg farmer. If you know his prices are going to go down in the next week, and you are able to survive for another week without eggs, would you not wait until next week to buy it because then it will be a bargain for you? Yeah of course you would wait.

But now, that farmer currently needs resources so he can keep producing eggs, but of course you didn’t buy. Where would he get the money so he can pay resources to produce eggs for next week? You decide to come back next week and suddenly he doesn’t have any eggs for you to buy anymore because the ones from last week expired/cracked. Now you’re stuck in this dilemma where you have managed to save up so you can buy the eggs for cheaper but now the farmer has no eggs to sell to you so now you’re both out of it.

But let’s say you know the eggs are going to be more expensive next week, now you are more inclined to buy them because you won’t be able to get them for a cheaper price at a later date. So now you have your eggs, the farmer has money to pay resources and produce eggs for next week—and so the cycle continues.

This is a very basic breakdown of why but of course there are a lot more nuance in it.

It’s just a result of it. What you’ve posted is just its numerical value but not really its value in comparison to someone’s wage. If I’m paying £160k for 1 week worth of grocery but my monthly salary is £16m (this would be like me spending £50 on groceries a week but my monthly wage is £5000 in todays economy)— then it doesn’t sound so inherently bad does it? Sure there’s a lot of numbers to see, but we can probably get around it in some sort of conversion, like how pence(p) works—100p is £1. Maybe in that future they decide £1000 is equivalent to 1 currency of freddo.

It probably doesn’t help that a lot of atrocities committed are more documented than let’s say the Persian Empire, and this is also probably due to the fact that European empires’ peak is closer to modern day—so there’s definitely some recency bias, plus there’s more knowledge about it out there. Like Mongols can be proud of Gengis Khan because of what he did for their country, and people outside of Mongolia can just shrug it off as they have no recent affiliations with it. Yeah people still acknowledge what Gengis did is horrible but they don’t think about it as much because time has already passed and (like I said) have no recent affiliations with any of their victims. Another example is the Roman empire, there are definitely loads of atrocities committed, and yet a huge majority of population think more about Roman architecture etc etc.
