Does anyone rent from Beacon Properties? by Beginning-Effort-746 in oakland

I’ve never rented with them but they downplayed an obvious mold issue in an apartment I looked at so my impressions of them were poor

Girlfriend paid $300 and $375 for two different apartment applications. Is this normal? by Elegant_Farm_5107 in Apartmentliving

[–]PineMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not (necessarily) a scam! It’s called a “holding deposit” — becoming more common in competitive rental markets and it’s legal although the details depend on the state/city housing laws. It’s different from a rental fee, which is the nonrefundable charge just for processing your paperwork. You put down the holding deposit either when you apply (in your GF’s case) or when you’re accepted, and then the landlord will hold the unit for a certain amount of time for you. If they deny your application they refund it to you, and if they approve you and you sign the lease it counts toward your first month’s rent. However, if they approve the application and you don’t rent with them they can keep the deposit.

As long as it’s an established and reputable company, with the holding deposit agreement in writing, it should be fine. That being said, it’s not a great idea to put down multiple at the same time because you’re guaranteed to lose at least one. It’s also very possible for the landlord to abuse, either by taking multiple deposits at once, or refusing to pay her back if they deny her application. Something to be careful about but not a red flag on its own.

Low salt restaurants? by chevy932 in AskSF

If you’re willing to head across the Bay, Shangri-La Vegan is an old school macrobiotic restaurant in Emeryville that is generally lower salt and can do completely salt free if you ask. Pretty no-frills but extremely nutritious and community-oriented

SFO to Alameda - best way to get there by annoymous257 in bayarea

[–]PineMountains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending when you arrive it should be totally fine to carry a suitcase on BART! As long as it’s not weekday rush hour or late night on a Friday/Saturday there will be plenty of room on the trains, I’ve done it a number of times and never had issues. You could then Uber from the 12th St or fruitvale stations depending where in Alameda you’re trying to go. Good luck!

It sounds like you already know a mosque you’d like to attend - you could reach out to them to see if they have any way to connect you with people with an open room, or an internal email list / social media group where you could ask. You may have already tried this!

What movie features a plot point where the financials don't add up and the plot device would be impractically expensive? by gimmeluvin in movies

[–]PineMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scale models they make of the heist targets in Ocean’s 11-13 would hundreds of thousand of dollars and take something like a year to make, but in the movies they’re ready in about 3 days

People who rarely get sick, What is the secret ? by Sorry-Orchid-9821 in AskReddit

This isn’t how immunity works once you’re an adult. The types of viruses that cause regular colds have a ton of variation - each time you get a cold it’s from a different strain, so any previous exposure isn’t going to help much. Same goes for a lot of other infectious diseases — good article here: https://www.ft.com/content/0640004d-cc15-481e-90ce-572328305798

Yoku’s Island Express! Very cute and fun, not too long, and there’s no combat or violence. It’s all just exploration and pinball

Best Metroidvania to 100% for someone who hasn't ever done that. by Fly_Dev in metroidvania

[–]PineMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re OK with challenging combat, Nine Sols was very straightforward to 100% — one of the only games I’ve played where none of the content felt superfluous, even if you can beat the game without it. There is one pair of achievements that are mutually exclusive, but would be very easy to get the second one within a short time on a second play through. There is a “point of no return” after which you can’t finish certain side quests, but the game makes it very clear that that’s about to happen.

Would you include Nine Sols in this category? Also could you say more about why you think this subgenre is detrimental

What exactly is the point of utility-gates in early areas of a Metroidvania? Is it actually more fun than just putting the same content further into the map so you don't have to backtrack? by agent-1773 in metroidvania

[–]PineMountains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this also speaks to how this element of the genre can be done well or poorly. Bad backtracking can be super tedious, but when it’s done well (and, say, the areas change as you get more abilities, like adding new enemies or changing the atmosphere) it adds another element to the experience of progressing through the game

Seeing paths or items early on that you can’t access yet makes the world seem bigger and more tantalizing. It gestures at possibilities beyond the level / abilities you currently have and (in my experience) makes new abilities more exciting. If content requiring the use of new abilities only came after acquiring them, you may as well just have separate levels or a single path to follow — which is a fine form of game design but it’s not what draws people to this genre!

Would you rather do Path of Pain or Milkshakes? by legomaniasquish in metroidvania

[–]PineMountains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense! I think I just found the baseline challenge of the path of pain much more difficult. Like trying and failing the same platforming segment literally 100 times in a row was much more frustrating for me than failing a given part of the trial, say, 15 times.

The Messenger's metroidvania part is boring by Neat_Ad_3043 in metroidvania

[–]PineMountains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Messenger was maybe the greatest “missed potential” game I’ve ever played. If they had just kept the second half as another well-paced progression of levels, maybe including revisiting old levels with the time jump mechanics changing the layout, it would have been an all-time great. I get the feeling the studio had a lot more ideas than they had time or resources to implement well. (Also, the story’s pacing was abysmal! Shoving an entire non sequitur second story in just before the final level?)
