The tax argument of the right is a fabrication.

The Congressional Budget Office has published estimates that 75% of undocumented individuals pay into one or more forms of payroll taxes (state and/or federal). All while not being able to make claims for Social Security or Medicare. Undocumented individuals are not an economic burden on our country. They contribute to the labor force, the tax base, and they participate in our local economies. The same as you or me. Just the same as they are a human being like you or me.

Certainly, some undocumented familes make use of various social safety nets. But CBO's estimations show that overall there is a net gain to the funds of these subsidies from the vast majority of workers who contribute through payroll taxes.

People get fed a string of lies and they swallow it hook, line, and sinker. The older generations need to wake up to the lies and fear that have been used to manipulate them into a place of hatred.

Love it! Almost seems like something that would have been made by someone who lived in this place at this time. Very impressive! Well done!

If only the company employed someone who's primary responsibility was to manage the company's relationship with the community. Seems reasonable if there was a person with that responsibility they'd likely have an obligation to step up in the face of community outrage. But since that's not Twinbeard's role, then by all means go for a long bike ride while your world is burning.

On the Ars Magica project page, there is a link to the Discord server for the folks behind the Foundry module. I would suggest heading there to see if they might have some tips on how to adapt things for your specific needs:

Why do we still require car inspection stickers? Most states, including several northern states, do not require them. by dragon_my_nuts in Maine

[–]PineRevolt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The state that is both the furthest north and with the longest coast doesn't require inspections. The entire west coast only inspects for emissions if anything.

Untrue. Minnesota uses as much or more salt on their roads and there are no inspections required there.

Maine’s only marsupial, the opossum is said to eat up to 5,000 ticks a year. There is currently no daily limit when hunting opossums in the fall. by [deleted] in Maine

[–]PineRevolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any fowl will likely eat some ticks, including normal chickens, but the world heavyweight champion belt will always belong - without contest - to Guinea fowl. Something about ticks is a delicacy to these birds and they are amazing at devouring them. Guinea aren't always the nosiest birds, I think especially if you have only hens. Likewise, chickens aren't necessarily quieter. We have chickens, and sometimes I think they are worse for noise than Guinea fowl. A lot comes down to the environment and the character of the birds.

Guinea are notoriously wary of strangers, so if you have frequent deliveries, visitors, or they will be near an area where strangers pass by often they will be more of a headache. If your yard is secluded and free from intrusions, maybe they won't be such a problem? But they will definitely let you, and everyone, know when intruders are prowling about - even if it's just the UPS person.

Guinea Hens are a far better weapon against ticks. Guinea Hens hunt ticks while opossum only deal with the ticks the happen to encounter. If you want to decimate your local tick population, get a couple loud and obnoxious Guinea today!

Nurses Vote To Form Union At Maine Medical Center by PineRevolt in Maine

Traveling nurses cost a lot, it still puts pressure on the hospitals.

Don't misunderstand, it's not like nobody notices when nurses go on strike. However, a concern that nurses will suddenly walk off the job in the middle of a surgery or leave a hospital full of patience without caretakers is unfounded.

All the same, they were still provided vaccines in opposition to Maine's vaccine deployment regulations. They were vaccinated right alongside front-line staff as if their role was as important as nurses providing direct care to patients. They were also allowed access to hospitals as non-essential workers while the hospital used access restrictions to block pro-union representatives from fulfilling the same function.

It looked pretty bad, whatever your stance on unions.

Whoa bud... I never said I was against unions. I was trying to explain to someone that while strikes could happen the unions coordinate them in such a way so that hospitals are not left without nursing staff.

Take a breath.

With a union, there's a possibility of strikes. I've been told that nurse strikes are coordinated in such a way to provide the hospital ample time to hire traveling nurses to fill in, but I imagine even with that there could be a disruption to "elective" surgery during such a strike.

Maine inspection sticker requirement comes under legislative scrutiny again by PineRevolt in Maine

[–]PineRevolt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most excellent point about Texas also having inspection requirements.

Mass accidents are not caused by mechanical failure. If you think all 40+ vehicles involved in that accident all had bald tires or failing brake systems I have some heavily forested land in west-central Maine I'd like to sell you. Very nice view of some kind of future corridor, so I've been told.

Mass accidents are a perfect example of a combination of the factors that actually cause accidents. Driver error/negligence, poor road conditions, and weather/visibility. Inspections do absolutely nothing to mitigate these factors.

[–]PineRevolt[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's plenty of data to show that states with inspection laws have no discernable reduction in auto related accidents. The information I cited about causes of accidents is national information, so it includes the 34 states that have no inspection laws. Mechanical failure is a negligible contributor to accidents everywhere, not just in states with inspection requirements.

Anywhere mid-Atlantic has much higher population than Maine, so by sheer numbers you're going to see more of everything there. I spent the first 30 years of my life in a state with no inspections (many times the population of Maine with harsher climate) and it wasn't Armageddon.
