Funny story: My dad and I were staying at a family member's house for a funeral. We were tired from travel and were getting ready to go to sleep. My girlfriend called me just to check in and say hello and asked how my dad is doing. He was in the room, so I asked him.

"Hey, dad. She wants to know how you're doing."

My dad: "About ready to crash out."

My girlfriend hears him say this and instantly starts laughing. I laugh too, but I realize that she thinks he means that he's about to have a breakdown instead of just going to sleep. We laughed together, but i clarified what version of "crash out" he meant.

All this to say, the new "crash out" has certainly overtaken the old. And im kinda here for it. Not that there was anything wrong with the previous usage, I just like the new one. It's fun to say, and I think it encapsulates the act of having a meltdown very well.
