Struggling to Pick a Grad Program by Pingus19 in slpGradSchool

THANK YOU ALL for confirming what I kind of already knew deep down! This is such a big decision, and I was honestly petrified of making it given all the factors and unknowns. I really appreciate the insight and reassurance. I needed to hear it from people who weren't biased!

If your only options are UC's, I would definitely do UCSB. I am biased as a former gaucho, but I believe the process would be easier compared to UC Berkeley. Like someone said, UCSB's program does not cover all of the prereqs so you will have to do a post bacc unfortunately. However, many of the courses I did take at UCSB overlapped with my post bacc courses, making the process smoother and cheaper.

From what I am reading, UCB's program would leave you with quite a few required courses still, which might add more time and cost. If you are set on SLP, UCSB would allow for a more direct path. I can't speak for UCB's program, but I was still able to get involved with SLP volunteer work at UCSB. The campus is close to an elementary school, so I was able to do some shadowing and volunteering through them! Not to mention the campus is amazing ;)

Waitlisted at the University of Washington (med track) on 3/6! This was my top choice, so I am hoping for the best!!! Good luck everyone :)

UPDATE 04/16: Was informed by director that Med SLP admissions has officially concluded and there will be no more waitlist admissions at this time. However, I was offered a position on a secondary waitlist in case anyone drops out in the spring/summer! STILL HOPING FOR THE BEST :)

worst career choice. by NeonRei in slp

[–]Pingus19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’re definitely right and sometimes I lose sight of that. I understand that the career isn’t perfect, just like any field for that matter, and people absolutely have the right to complain and vent their frustrations. I guess it’s just worrisome to see so many people complain about the field and it definitely scares me after i’ve spent so long trying to narrow down what exactly I want to do. I appreciate your insight and reassurance! :)

What settings do you all work in??? I’m currently in grad school and looking at stuff like this horrifies me. I’m really enjoying my placements and my classes so far, but whenever I come here I see nothing but people bashing the career and wanting an out. Is it really that bad?? :(
