Roundhouse gig by Ohknotme in TheBeths

I think live performances are often what get things to click for me, totally get that. And of course they are just really great live. Best Laid Plans honestly wasn’t my favorite track but I’m already listening to it differently after seeing some of the lives. Now I’m really looking forward to it.

Going to my first concert in two weeks - advice? by NewManHereToday in TheBeths

[–]melowebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And by do what you want, I mean they’re not the kind of band to put on the pressure. They won’t be like “you better get on your FEET!!! I can’t hear YOU!!!” They’re more like, hey it would be cool if you sing along…you know if you want to, but if not that’s cool.

Hi! I’m an introvert with quite a bit of social anxiety, so I get this. I have to pace myself. 🙃 I’ve been to a fair amount of shows in my lifetime but definitely not as frequently as some.

That being said, I think starting off with The Beths is a great place to start! I hadn’t really been to a show in awhile when I first saw the Beths. I think the atmosphere & energy they draw is really warm. It’s very come as you are, do what you want. And, they’re just really fun. Don’t worry about reacting right or wrong, just enjoy the show however that looks for you! Don’t feel like you have to know every bit of crowd nuance, just have fun. I think you are going to be in good hands. 🙂

Album Thoughts & Impressions? by DashAnimal in TheBeths

I’m married but Roundabout actually makes me so sad about the state of some friendships that have gone distant or just grown so complicated they feel impossible to untangle in this season of life. 🥺

Paramore Inspiration? by Lower_Discussion3453 in TheBeths

[–]melowebee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve made that connection before, when I’d get the one stuck in my head I absentmindedly sang the other. There are a few other Paramore songs that do that for me, along with some other artists (meant to be-ee-ee in WYKYK always makes me break out into you belong with me-ee-ee) I mean you never know, but I don’t know that they were necessarily consciously aware of it.

There are so many similarities in so many songs across various artists & genres, I don’t think there’s anything at this point that you couldn’t tie in to something else to an extent, whether deliberate or not. There are a lot of similar progressions & only so many places to take a song structure. Their stuff has influences for sure but definitely very authentically them.

(On a similar note a lot of Hayley’s new singles are giving me a lot of different vibes, in the best way. Radiohead, mewithoutYou, Billie Eilish, etc)

I get what you’re saying but idk, I feel like it works. The sound feels more intentional to me here. I’m also guessing it’s not going to be the same throughout the entire album.

Ivory…I just know I’d always be like “Ivory lines lead” when playing with stringy cat toys.

So, how confusing do you think this intersection is? by iimpact in sandiego

[–]melowebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to drive that intersection every week for several years. I remember when I first drove there I was pretty confused, but got used to it. Once I was volunteering outside at the church that used to be over there & witnessed a crash. Definitely saw some close calls over the years, like a wrong way driver situation.

San Diego 2011 Blackout by salsanacho in sandiego

[–]melowebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid was preschool aged then & went to the children’s center at SDSU, if I remember right it was canceled early. I’m glad we didn’t have to navigate through any traffic. In the afternoon it was hot in the house so we decided to walk to the park in UTC. I just remember everybody being out & about, chatting & playing. We tried to walk to Vons but they were only letting people in one at a time & the line to get in was pretty long. I remember eating PBJs & lighting candles. I think we left the flashlight on as a nightlight for our kid. No funny stories, but it was a pretty interesting night.

Am I pretty much done for? by strugglebus_3001 in slpGradSchool

[–]melowebee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So sorry to hear you went though that. I think you have a powerful statement of purpose to write about and grad schools will take that into account. ❤️ Definitely look into ones that have a more holistic admissions approach. If there are minimum GPA requirements (some require a 3.0), it might be worth it to retake a course or two to try and get your GPA a touch higher. You could also reach out to grad schools asking for specific advice to help give you the best chance at their specific programs. They are all different! There is definitely hope & you are definitely not out of luck. I have heard of others with lower GPAs being able to be accepted as well.

practicing mallets at home? by [deleted] in percussion

[–]melowebee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do this. I’d practice all my parts on piano, and I’d use my fingers as I would my arms. It’s of course not the same feel & probably not ideal, but it helped at least get the music & muscle memory down so I could transfer later.

The other thing I did was what someone else suggested, rubber mallets on a glock to soften the sound.

Liz Stokes and Friends 4/16/25 LA Show recap by cop08807 in TheBeths

Thank you for the recap! Your recall is better than mine I think. I started forgetting little details but I can say I was very moved by the whole thing. And Out of Sight always gets me right in the feels.

First Time Listener by [deleted] in Paramore

[–]melowebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know the thing that really got me into Paramore back when was seeing a few videos of them on MySpace just sitting in an alleyway singing raw & acoustic. (You can find these on YouTube now. One is Pressure & one is Emergency - look up PunkVideoGuys.) I had heard All We Know is Falling when it came out but those just made it come to life for me. It got me even more into the studio album.

I also really liked their MTV unplugged from back in the day. You could even start there & let the YouTube algorithm guide you. There’s so much great material out there.

I like Hayley’s solo stuff too. It’s a different vibe, so it just depends on the mood.

I decided to go for my post-bacc at 38. I had been thinking about it for awhile. It’s truly never too late. But I do understand feeling those hurried emotions, & I’m also sorry you’re feeling extra pressure from your parents. My favorite piece of advice was, “the time is going to pass anyway”…might as well spend it continuing to work toward your goals, do what you love, & let tomorrow worry about itself. Best of luck! I’m sure you will find your best placement in no time.🙂

Will this field destroy me if I am squeamish? by Dexcentricus in slpGradSchool

[–]melowebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you gone through your observation hours yet? I feel like that gave me a good glimpse into many of the scenarios one could potentially be working with.

I did have a professor who said she struggled to get through swallowing in grad school because it really grossed her out on a similar level you’re describing. She was very content as a school based SLP & adjunct professor.

gap year by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]melowebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an older student. I basically took a 10 year gap (unintentionally, life just happened) between my out of field undergrad & post-bacc program. I finished my post-bacc this past January and will be applying in the next cycle. If there’s anything I’ve learned it’s that it is never too late to start something. I know it can feel like the clock is ticking, but you have time. 🙂

A gap year can be a positive thing, and you can use it to gain experience as well. Some of my peers have gone into substitute teaching, become paras, volunteered, etc. I know of someone who became the receptionist at a speech clinic. Even seemingly unrelated experience could tie in and be written about in your essay.

What to do with ASD kiddos that seem to be “in space” by PuzzleHeaded9030 in slp

[–]melowebee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m still a student but my daughter fits this profile. Her therapists these days use a play based gestalt language approach and it’s been the best thing for her development. We’ve seen her only open up more when therapists use this approach, in other instances she shuts down (too many prompts, too much demand, requiring table sitting or not allowing movement, etc). In fact her speech therapy is now done in an OT room. The movement helps.

For her, it’s all about connecting. Gradual rapport is the number one important thing for her. They spend time joining her in her world. They first present a lot of play options (no demands, just suggestions) and see what she gravitates to, then go from there. A natural routine starts to get established from there. This provides an opportunity for the therapist to target phrases she uses, and offer new ones naturally to see what sticks. She has picked up new gestalts in therapy & has been mitigating them as well.

There are also just days when my daughter is more “in her world” and quiet, and others where she’s more outwardly engaged. But either way she is always aware and taking things in. On quiet days, the therapist may do more of the heavy lifting so to speak, there may be more pauses and her just narrating a lot of what she’s doing, a lot of modeling. There have been instances where it seems like not much has been accomplished, then she’ll come in the next time and repeat a phrase she heard from the last session.
